Note: Even if your group did not prepare it, please show the calculations necessary to find the volume
of concentrated HCl needed to prepare 250ml of the 20% by mass HCl solution (the density of this
dilute solution would be 1.098 g/ml.)

How does the level of the collected water in the beaker (compared with the level of the water
remaining in the flask) need to be adjusted? Explain.
The level of the water collected in the beaker needs to be adjusted with the vapor pressure of the
water in mind, taking into account Dalton’s Law, with regards to the partial pressure of the H2 and
H2O.
Write and balance the ionic and net ionic equation describing the reaction that takes place.
What is the molar ratio between the magnesium metal and hydrogen gas produced?
Balanced Equation: Mg + 2HCl → H2 + MgCl2
Ionic Equation: Mg + 2H+ + Cl- → H2 + Mg2+ + Cl-
Net Ionic Equation: Mg + 2H+ → H2 + Mg2+
The molar ration between the magnesium metal and hydrogen gas produced is 1:1.
What does the volume of the collected water in the beaker represent? Explain how it is used.
The volume of collected water in the beaker represents the volume of gas the reaction produced. It is
first used to find the mL of H2 gas produced. It is then used in the equation PV=nRT to find the moles
of hydrogen gas in the equation. You can then utilize this calculation by using the balanced equation of
the reaction to find the moles of Magnesium. The volume of water helps you to conclude the lab with
finding the molar mass of Magnesium.
How does Dalton’s law lab apply to this lab?
Through the use of Dalton’s Law, one can find the true amount of H2 displacing the water as opposed
to a generalized, inaccurate reading, which would exclude the water vapor. As Dalton’s Law states that
Ptotal = P1 + P2 + P3 …, the total pressure in the system is equal to the partial pressure of the H2 and H2O
combined.
What is your percent error? Show any calculations.
The percent error is 7.19%
