Final year project thesis proposal for B.Sc. graduating class of 2015.

Abstract
In this thesis we do on GSM based irrigation water pump controller system in order to minimize
the work load of the farmer or user. The thesis includes the back ground of GSM, irrigation
system, microcontroller and the methodology and the simulation of the project. The working
principle of the project is when the user or farmer send text or call on the GSM in the farming
place, then the sensor in the farming detects the moisture of the farm and it will start watering the
farm. Watering is start if the moisture is below fifty percent. The main advantage of the thesis is
it reduce the work load of the user and user can use anywhere in the world where there is
network.

Introduction
Irrigation is a specific process of artificial supplying water to the land or soil that is being
cultivated. Traditionally in dry regions having no or little rainfall water had to be supplied to the
field either through canals or hand pumps, tube wells. But this method had severe problems such
as increase workload of farm labor and often it lead to problem such as over-irrigation or underirrigation and leaching of soil. Further there were issues like weeding, lesser yield of crop as an
effect of problem mentioned above. To solve those problems we proposed a technology titled
GSM based irrigation water pump controller. The technology minimizes the problem mentioned
before by using GSM and microcontroller to pump water by motor. The system contain
component like power regulator, mobile phone, relay and etc. The basic idea of this project is
give birth to DTMF controlled soil moisture sensor in which the automation process is done
through the microcontroller based technology. In the project we use one the microcontroller
which is dedicated at the water pump and it make the heart of device. The design of system is
very sensitive and should be handled with utmost care because the microcontroller is a 5 volts
device. So every small parameter should be given high importance while designing the
interfacing circuit between the controller and water pump. The operation of system is initialized
by calling to the mobile phone which is present at the soil moister sensor in the field. GSM based
control system implements the emerging application of the GSM technology. Using GSM
networks, a control system has been proposed so that it will act as an embedded system which
can monitor and control appliances and other devices locally using built-in input and output
peripherals. The system allows the user to effectively monitor and control the house or office
appliance and equipment via the mobile phone set by sending commands in the form of SMS
messages and receiving the appliances status. The main concept behind the project is receiving
the sent SMS and processing it further as required to perform several operations. The type of the
operation to be performed depends on the nature of the SMS sent.

Objective of the project

A general objective of the project is that to irrigate water for farming purpose using GSM to
control water pump motor.

To co-ordinate GSM and motor through Short Message Service (SMS).

To effectively control the farm field moisture via SMS
To eliminate the need of physically being present in any location for tasks during

farm.
Minimize power and time wastage

Specific objective of the project

We do this project to reduce the workload of the farmer by using the technology.
To save time of the farmer using this technology during watering.
The project can save water by remembering to return itself off at the right time.

Statement of the problem

Traditionally in dry regions having no or little rainfall water had to be supplied to the field either
through canals or hand pumps, tube wells. But this mechanism is difficult for farmer and it lead
to less product and workload of farmer. To solve this problem we use wireless technology called
GSM to control water pump for irrigation. We propose this project to reduce workload and
increase the productivity of the farmer by using GSM based irrigation water pump controller.
This project is useful for any person whether they are educated or illiterate.

Application of GSM in irrigation

The Global System for Mobile Communication is a standard set developed by the
European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to describe technologies (2G and 3G)
A GSM based irrigation water pump controller system has two major technologies behind
it, primary being the GSM and secondary one is the controller or processor. GSM (Global
System for Mobile Communication) is a standard set used to describe protocols for digital
cellular networks. This GSM facility serves as an important part for controlling the irrigation on
field and sending the results to the farmer using coded signals to a mobile device which
indirectly controls the entire farm irrigation system. GSM is used to inform the user about
exact field condition through a SMS on user request. The GSM model is controlled by a
standard set of AT (Attention) commands. The connections between the two mobiles are done
using GSM. The GSM module and microcontroller are connected using UART (universal
asynchronous receiver / transmitter). When the moisture sensor senses the low moisture content
of the soil, it gives a signal to the microcontroller. The microcontroller then gives a signal to the
called mobile (which is kept in the auto answering mode).

Advantage of the project

The major advantage of this project is it reduce the workload of farmer. Moreover the advantage
of project can be:

Controls high voltage water pumps.

Feedback generated with the help of LED indicator.
Highly sensitive.
Power saving.
Low cost.
Remote control from anywhere in the world.

Disadvantage of the project

Although the project has many advantages, it has the following disadvantages:

Communication delays.
Not work in remote areas.
Undetectable internal problems in motor.

Application of the project

GSM based irrigation water pump controller have the following application area:

Utilized for irrigation purpose.

Very useful for illiterates to operate.

Can be operated from any place in the world.

No need of manual check for moisture level in soil.

Main component of the project

The major building blocks of the projects are:

Regulated Power Supply.

Microcontroller.

DTMF decoder.

Relay with driver (Interfacing circuit).

Crystal oscillator.

Reset LED indicators.

Moisture sensor

As we see from the block diagram we make use of one microcontroller, which is dedicated at the
water pump. The microcontroller forms the heart of the devices. A relay switch to which
irrigation motor is connected which is operated through microcontroller. Toe operate the system
initially we should make a call to the mobile phone which is present at the soil moisture sensor in
the field. That the mobile phone will be automatically will be answered after one or two rings
then the control of the sensor in our hands by using keypad buttons of our mobile phone the
motor will be ON/OFF through relay switch.

Software we will use

PIC-C compiler for Embedded C programming.

PIC kit 2 programmer for dumping code into Micro controller.

Express SCH for Circuit design.

Proteus for hardware simulation.
