Cinnamon Bun Bites

2 cups (500 mL) whole wheat flour

1 tsp. (5 mL) baking powder
1/4 tsp. (2 mL) salt
1/2 cup (125 mL) water or milk
1/4 cup (60 mL) canola oil
1 large egg
2 Tbsp. (30 mL) honey
1 tsp. (5 mL) cinnamon
1/4 cup (60 mL) finely chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
Cream cheese drizzle (optional):
1/4 cup (60 mL) light cream cheese
1-2 Tbsp. (15-30 mL) milk or water
Preheat oven to 350F.
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder and salt. In a small bowl stir together water, oil and egg.
Add to the dry ingredients and stir just until you have a soft dough.
On a lightly floured surface, roll or pat the dough into a rectangle that measures roughly 814-inch.
Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon and nuts, if using. Starting from a long edge, roll up jellyrole style and pinch the edge to seal. Using a sharp serrated knife or (even better) dental floss, slice half
an inch thick and place slices cut side down on a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with nonstick spray.
Bake for about 15 minutes, until springy to the touch. Wait until they have cooled completely before you
spread them with cream cheese.
Makes about 2 dozen biscuits. Store extra in a tightly covered container of freeze. If they are frosted,
store the container in the fridge.

Homemade Doggie Treats

Makes 2 dozen treats
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
1/2 cup melted bacon fat
1 large egg
1/2 cup cold water
Preheat the oven to 350F.
Combine all ingredients in a medium bowl and mix by hand until dough forms. Add more flour if
the dough is too sticky. Add more bacon fat or water if the dough is too stiff.
Roll out onto a floured surface, to a thickness of just under 1/2-inch. Cut into 1x4-inch bars and
transfer to a cookie sheet. Poke divots into the bars (I use the end of a chopstick) and bake in a
preheated oven for approximately 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Turn the oven off, flip the
bars, and place back in the oven until cool (this will further crisp them).
Treats can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

1 banana, peeled

1 cup oat flour

2/3 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup dried parsley

3 tablespoons peanut butter

1 egg, beaten

Preheat oven to 300F. Put banana in a large bowl and use a spoon or potato masher to mash it thoroughly. Add oat
flour, oats, parsley, peanut butter and egg and stir well to combine. Set aside for 5 minutes.
Roll mixture into 24 balls, using about 1 tablespoon dough for each; transfer to a large parchment paper-lined baking
sheet as done. Use the back of a spoon or the heel of your hand to press each ball into a (1 1/2- to 2-inch) coin. Bake
until firm and deep golden brown on the bottom, 40 to 45 minutes. Set aside to let cool completely.
Storage note: It's best to store these in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Or, freeze them to give to your pal
later; just be sure to thaw the treats befor handing them out.

Homemade Dog Treats

I added virgin coconut oil to the batter because its awesome for dogs and humans alike. If you
dont have coconut oil on hand, and dont want to run to the store, simply replace it with olive
oil.
1/2 cup of peanut butter (I used the creamy kind)
1/4 cup honey
1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil (or olive oil)
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup all-purpose flour
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Whisk together peanut butter, honey, oil and chicken broth. In a
separate bowl, combine flours and oatmeal. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients. Place
dough on flour dusted surface. Roll or press dough out to about 1/4 inch thick. Use a small bone

cookie cutter to cut out cookies. My cookie cutter was a 5-inch bone-shaped , but for small dogs
you may want to use a small cookie cutter (around 2). Roll out leftover scraps and cut out as
many as possible. Put cut out cookies on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 14-16
minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack.

Ingredients:
6 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 Tbsp baking soda
1 tbsp ground ginger
2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 c applesauce
3/4 c molasses
1/2 c honey
1/4 c vegetable oil
1 egg, beaten
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.Combine all of the ingredients in your mixer with a
dough hook. Turn it out onto a floured surface and roll it out to 1/4 inch thick.
Cut it with cookie cutter or simply with a pizza cutter. Place them on cookie sheets and
poke each in the center with a fork.
Bake for 8 minutes and turn oven off, keeping oven door closed. Let the treats sit in the
oven until hard about 1-2 hours.

Tips & Techniques

Pumpkin - You can substitute or mix in fresh or canned pumpkin for this recipe for
dog treats. If you use canned pumpkin, be sure that it is pure pumpkin, and not pie
filling.

Wheat Free - Make this homemade dog treat wheat free with a wheat and gluten
free flour like potato, rice or oat flour.

The soft and chewy texture of this double sweet - sweet potato recipe for dog treats is
a seasonal favorite that can be enjoyed all year long.

Spinach is the vegetable of choice for these heart healthy cookies. Did you know that
spinach is extremely rich in antioxidants, a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and contains
over 20 other vitamins and minerals? Wow, with a veggie this healthy, we should all include
this gem in our diets!
The carrots in this recipe add vitamins and a natural sweetness that most dogs love. The
rolled oats also contain omega-3 fatty acids, and don't forget the healthy fat added by the
extra virgin olive oil. We know what you're thinking, with such a heart healthy treat, we'll
look the other way while you try a nibble.

Ingredients:

1 cup whole wheat flour

1 cup rolled oats

1/8 cup Parmesan cheese

1 2/3 cup frozen spinach

1 cup grated carrot

1/8 cup chicken broth, low sodium

1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil

12. Cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
Storing - These homemade dog cookies will keep fresh in the refrigerator for up to two
weeks. Keep them for up to 6 months in your freezer.
Yield - Using a tablespoon sized cookie scooper, this recipe will make 24 dog cookies.

Tips & Techniques

Vegetarian & Vegan Dog Treat - Make this dog cookie recipe a true vegetarian
treat by substituting the chicken broth with water. To make it a vegan dog treat, you
will also want to substitute the Parmesan cheese with soy or almond cheese.

Blender or Food Processor? - Personally, my blender works much better at

pureeing foods, so that is what this recipe calls for. If you find that your food
processor works better, then by all means, use the kitchen appliance that works best.
The idea is to achieve a thick liquid consistency to blend well with the dry
ingredients.

Parmesan Cheese - To help make this an easy dog treat recipe, we used powdered
Parmesan cheese. However, you can use pre-grated or freshly grated Parmesan, too.
If you grate the cheese yourself, be sure that the pieces will fold well into the treat
without sticking out, as they will most likely burn in the oven.

Fork or Spoon? - It may sound a little strange to stir the wet and dry ingredients
together with a fork, but that's what's needed. The spinach mixture has a desire to
clump together, but by using a fork you can break apart the little mounds of spinach.

Microwave Your Spinach - Research suggests that microwaving spinach is a

better option than boiling. The reasoning is that by boiling the spinach you can
decrease the amount of folate by up to half. Since these homemade dog cookies are
all about their nutritional value, lets keep the vitamins in the cookie and in our dog's
tummies.

With all of the nutrition available in these homemade dog cookies, the only thing left to
decide is which day to make the recipe. Be sure to share these heart healthy treats with your
dogs friends and family so they too can love and enjoy their dog by their side for years to
come.

Since bacon is high in fat and sodium, this may not be an everyday biscuit. But we've tried to
off-set the indulgent ingredients with healthy and nutritional ones, like ground flax and
wheat bran.
With two of dogs favorite flavors, all in one dog treat, get ready to wipe the drool off the
floor, and make extra batches!

Ingredients:

2 pieces bacon, thick cut, cooked

and crumbled (see tip)

1/8 cup bacon grease

2 cups whole wheat flour

1/4 cup ground flax

1/4 cup wheat bran

2 tsp baking powder

1/2 cup natural peanut butter

1 egg, lightly beaten

3/4 cup water

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 325 F
2. Cook bacon until crispy. Drain on a paper towel.
3. Pour the bacon grease into a glass measuring cup.

4. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, ground flax, wheat bran, and baking
powder.
5. Crumble the bacon, once cooled, and stir into the flour mixture.
6. In a microwave safe bowl, warm the peanut butter. Approximately 30 seconds.
7. In a medium bowl, lightly beat the egg. Then pour in the peanut butter, water, and
bacon grease. Use a fork to whisk together the wet ingredients until completely
combined.
8. Make a well in the dry ingredients, and pour in the peanut butter mixture.
9. Stir until combined.
10. Knead lightly in the bowl with your hands.
11. Lay down one large sheet of parchment paper, roll your dough onto it, then lay
another piece of parchment on top. You'll essentially have a dog treat dough
sandwich. See the video for tips.
12. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness.
13. Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
14. Cut shapes out of the dough and place on your prepared baking sheet. Gather the
extra dough, knead into a ball, and repeat the process of rolling and cutting until
there is no more dough.
15. Bake for 15 minutes.
16. Turn off the oven and leave them there to cool for 2 hours or overnight.
Storing - These homemade dog biscuits will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to two
weeks. They will keep in the freezer for up to 6 months.
Yield - Using a 3 inch bone shaped cookie cutter, you will get 18 homemade dog biscuits.

Tips & Techniques

Ground Flax - Flax has so many wonderful health benefits. Learn more about using
flax in your homemade dog treats, with our Cheesy Flax Squares recipe.

Choosing Cookie Cutters - Because this recipe uses baking powder, these peanut
butter dog biscuits will puff up some during the baking process. Because of that, you

will want to choose a dog cookie cutter that has simple shapes. The puffed cookie will
not show the same amount of detail as another dog treat recipe.

Crumble Bacon - After the bacon is cooked and cooled, it's time to crumble. Instead
of doing this by hand, one tiny piece at a time, break your bacon into large pieces and
place in a plastic zip-lock bag. Then easily break and crumble the bacon inside the
bag with your hands. This saves time and greasy fingers! :)

Bacon Grease - Pour the grease into a glass measuring cup, as opposed to a plastic
one, because it will be very hot. You can make these homemade dog biscuits even
more special by using the entire amount of bacon grease, instead of just 1/8 of a cup.
If you choose to do this, do not add the full amount of water. Depending on how
much extra grease you have, add the water 1/4 cup at a time. Continue adding water,
up to 3/4 of a cup if needed, to make the dough combine.

Choice of Bacon - If your dog loves bacon, but needs to keep his homemade dog
biscuits on the healthier side, you can use turkey or low-sodium bacon for this recipe.

Peanut Butter - Once you have warmed the peanut butter, try to work quickly adding
the other wet ingredients. The reason is that the peanut butter will start to harden,
and it's much easier to combine everything while it is still quite warm.

When one of my taste tester tried these homemade dog biscuits, it was all she could do to
hold still and wait for the treat, while a line of drool hit the floor. If you have yet to make
your own dog treats, this is the recipe to start with. Your efforts will be highly rewarded, and
appreciated.

If you've ever grilled meat outdoors, you know that your dog will be underfoot and will
surely look up at you lovingly for a taste of what's on the grill. Often, though, our grilled fare
is not right for Fido. Check out the different dog treat ingredients that may be common
picnic foods for you, but very unhealthy for your dog.

Optional Glaze:

1 egg

1 tablespoon barbecue sauce

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 F
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the wheat flour, oats and wheat germ.
3. In a separate small bowl, stir the barbecue sauce, applesauce and beef broth together.
4. Pour the barbecue mixture into the dry ingredients.
5. Stir until thoroughly combined.
6. Roll dough to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.
7. Cut dog biscuits with your favorite dog cookie cutters.
8. Lightly spray non-stick spray on your baking sheet.
9. Place cut-outs on your prepared cookie sheet.
10. Bake for 35 minutes, or until golden brown.
11. Let cool completely on a wire rack before serving.
Optional Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and barbecue sauce. Then brush
over treats before they are baked.
Storing - You can store these homemade dog biscuits in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks
and in the freezer for up to 6 months. For more information regarding how to store dog
treats please review our tips and techniques.
Yield - This will depend on the size of the dog cookie cutter you choose. This recipe should
make approximately 2 dozen with a 1 1/2 inch cookie cutter.

Tips & Techniques

BBQ Sauce - When making these barbecue dog treats, look for a barbecue sauce that
has little or no sugar. The sweetness in this dog biscuits recipe should come from the
natural sugars in the applesauce.

BBQ Sauce Recipe - You can also make your own barbecue sauce. A sample recipe
would be 1 tbsp. of olive oil, 2 tbsp. tomato paste, to 1/2 cup beef broth. That should
get you started for a nice base BBQ sauce recipe that you can adjust as you see fit.

We've combined the sweet and savory

for a dog treat recipe that will stick to your dogs' ribs, and make him smack his lips. Not only
does it contain sweet pumpkin, but also savory sausage and potato.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup grated raw potato

2/3 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

1/2 cup (or 4 oz.) sausage, low sodium

3/4 cup whole wheat flour

3 tbsp canola oil

1 egg, lightly beaten

raw, shelled, and unsalted pumpkin seeds, optional

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 F
2. Wash and dry the potatoes. Grate them with a fine grater, including the skin.
3. In a medium bowl, stir the potatoes, pumpkin, and sausage. Be sure to really mix
these three ingredients together as they have a tendency to clump together.
4. Once thoroughly combined, add the flour, oil, and egg.
5. In the bowl, knead all the ingredients until combined.
6. Lightly spray a baking sheet with nonstick baking spray.
7. Using a 1 inch cookie scooper, scoop and flatten each pumpkin dog cookie. Or, you
can leave them in a cute little rounded cookie shape.

8. If you are using the pumpkin seeds, now is the time to decorate with them.
9. Bake for 25 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave them for 2 hours.
10. Completely cool before serving to your dog.
Storing & Yield: Because this recipe for homemade dog treats uses sausage, you'll want to
store these in your refrigerator for up to 1 week. Keep them in the freezer for up to 4
months. The yield for this recipe, using a 1 inch cookie scooper, is 3 dozen.

Tips & Techniques

Pumpkin Oil - If you already have pumpkin oil in your pantry, substitute it for the
canola oil. It will add a stronger pumpkin flavor to this already yummy recipe for
homemade dog treats.

Pumpkin Seeds - If you use pumpkin seeds to decorate your dog cookies, make sure
they are raw. Your dog does not need the added salt that comes with some varieties
of pumpkin seeds. Also, when decorating the pre-baked cookies, press down lightly
into the dough and the seeds should stay put after baking. You can also experiment
with mixing the seeds into the dough before baking. Or, another fun idea is to grind
up the seeds and roll the cookies in the crumbs before baking.

The dog biscuit dough is very moist, but it bakes into a hard outer shell. Once cooled, the
cookie is crisp on the outside and soft on the inside.
If your dog doesn't care for a soft treat, make each dog biscuit smaller so they will cook
through, and be an overall dry treat.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup plain bread crumbs

1 tbsp. dried parsley

2 cups pure pumpkin (not pie filling)

2 eggs, lightly beaten

4 ounce jar of turkey baby food, organic is best (see note)

1 cup of warm water

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 F
2. In a large bowl whisk together the flour, breadcrumbs, and dried parsley.
3. In a small bowl stir the pumpkin, eggs, turkey baby food, and warm water together
until combined.
4. Make a well in the flour and pour in the turkey mixture.
5. Stir until combined. The mixture will be very moist.
6. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick baking spray.
7. Scoop turkey and stuffing dog treats with a 1 inch cookie scooper onto the baking
sheet.
8. Bake for 30 minutes.
9. Turn off the oven and let sit for another 30 minutes.
10. Cool completely before serving.
Storing - Like other homemade dog biscuit recipes, this makes a soft dog treat. Store in the
refrigerator for 2 weeks. Keep them in the freezer for 4 months. For more information on
storing homemade dog treats read our tips and techniques.
Yield - This recipe makes approximately 60 rounded 1 inch dog biscuits.

Tips & Techniques

Turkey Baby Food - When choosing a turkey baby food, make sure to read the
ingredient list. Some will contain onion, which is not good for dogs (see below). If
you can not find a pure organic turkey puree, choose a turkey vegetable dinner
mixture, or something similar.

Substitute for Pumpkin - You can also use cooked, mashed sweet potato instead of
pumpkin. Just be sure to really mash, or whip the cooked sweet potato for a smooth
textured dog biscuit.

Stuffing - Please do not be tempted to substitute traditional stuffing for the plain
bread crumbs. Most pre-made stuffing contains onion which is on the list of foods
poisonous to dogs. Store bought stuffing also contains excess sugar and salt for dogs.

Homemade Bread Crumbs - You can make your own bread crumbs by putting a
couple slices of dry bread in a food processor. Then sprinkle your crumbs on a baking
sheet and pop into a 300 oven for 10 to 15 minutes. Lightly stir the crumbs half way
through. Use what you need and freeze the rest for other homemade dog biscuit
recipes.

Recipe: Pear & Molasses Dog Biscuits

We washed and cored the pears (remember: dogs can NOT eat pear pips or seeds. Like apple
seeds, cherry pips, peach pits, pear pips, plum pips, and apricot pips, these seeds contain a
compound that breaks down into cyanide so toss those!)
The other ingredients were simple:

Ingredients

2 cups chopped pears, cored

2-1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1/4 cup water

1 tablespoon baking powder

3 tablespoons molasses

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a cookie sheet.

I chopped my pears in a blender, doing just a little at a time (which was still faster than chopping
them by hand). Even after using the two cups of chopped pears for the recipe, I still had several
cups left to freeze for the future.
Next, I just tossed everything in a large bowl and mixed it by hand. The result is a very sticky,
heavy dough.
Turn out the dough on a lightly floured surface then knead (add some more flour if its extremely
sticky. It will be a little sticky anyway because of the molasses). Roll it out to about 1/4 inch
thickness then cut it in squares (or cut into bone shapes like I did!)

These biscuits dont spread as they cook so you can crowd them onto your cookie sheetjust
make sure theyre not touching.

Pop the cookie sheet in the oven for half an hour (the bottom of the biscuits should be golden
brown when done) then cool the biscuits completely before refrigerating or serving. Our dogs
loved these (and I loved finding a good use for those pears!)
