The security environment in Mogadishu and Somalia as a
whole is changing. New security challenges facing the
state and the people of Somalia that are emerging require
new responses and as such we opted for a holistic
approach that involves the participation of the local citizen
in order to take part in the security process. Today we are
in Dharkenley on sensitization drive that has been going

on throughout Mogadishu and this makes it the seventh

district to benefit from this opportunity,

SOUNDBITE(English) Omar Meyre Maow,
Dharkenley District Commissioner
The responsibility of security is to be taken by the people
before the administration of Dharkenley. That means that
each and every person in Dharkenley has a role to play in
security. Each and every one has to provide information if
he or she feels insecure. If that does not happen and the
people hide the information about the bad guys, the bad
guys will have an upper hand and the country will go back
to dark days of anarchy. I am calling on the people of
Dharkenley, especially the women, girls, boys and elders
to work closely with the authorities especially the security
agencies like NISA, Police and the local administration.
There is nothing to get alarmed about now only that I want
the people to overcome fear and get courage so that
everyone can go to school, places of work and home
without fear,

SECURITY SENSITIZATION DRIVE MOVES TO
DHARKENLEY DISTRICT OF MOGADISHU
Residents of Dharkenley district in Mogadishu are upbeat
about a fresh push in community policing, being
spearheaded by the Somali Police Force(SPF) and the
African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The residents today participated in a vibrant discussion on
insecurity in their neighborhood, at a well attended
meeting at the districts headquarters.
Dharkenley District Commissioner Omar Meyre Maow who
presided over the discussions urged the residents to get
involved in policing their district.
The meeting comes two days after a similar meeting was
held in crime prone Heliwaa district, hitherto an Al

Shabaab hideout, as part of a massive sensitization drive

to rein in on insecurity.
Present at the meeting were top AMISOM police officers
and the Dharkenley police boss Jimale Adow Mohamed.
Community policing seeks to enhance cooperation
between the police and the public. It is based on the
premise that both the police and the community must
work together to identify, prioritize and solve crime related
challenges.
There is nothing to get alarmed about now only that I want
the people to overcome fear and get courage so that
everyone can go to school, places of work and home
without fear, stressed District Commissioner Maow.
AMISOM Police Public Information Officer Edwin Mugera
asked Dharkenley residents to remain vigilant in the wake
of new security challenges. He said, The security
environment in Mogadishu and Somalia as a whole is
changing. New security challenges facing the state and
the people of Somalia that are emerging require new
responses and as such we opted for a holistic approach
that involves the participation of the local citizen in order
to take part in the security process. Today we are in
Dharkenley on sensitization drive that has been going on

throughout Mogadishu and this makes it the seventh

district to benefit from this opportunity.
At the meeting, police urged the residents to volunteer
information on criminals with the District Commissioner
noting that everyone has a responsibility to maintain
security.
The womens district chairperson, Fadumo Hussein,
welcomed the initiative saying, Security is number one
concern for us here in Dharkenley district. There is no life
without security. As Dharkenley district we prioritize
security and participate in security. We assist the
authorities with security information.
