In June of 2008 Jim Troglio, road commissioner for Hallock Township on the north side
of Peoria county,, approached Hoerr Construction with a problem with a lake overflow
pipe. The 24” corrugated metal pipe that drained a small subdivision lake was rusting
severely with holes in the bottom of the pipe at both ends. Jim was worried about the
possibility of a pipe failure leading to a collap
collapse
se in the dam and the road going across it.
it

Jim had heard about the possibility of lining the pipe so he called us to get some details.
We were working on a sewer pipe lining project for the e City of Peoria at the time, so we
had Jim come out to one of the repair sites to watch a an installation of our cured in place
pipe (CIPP). He was impressed with the fact that we didn’t have to dig up anything
any and
had the new pipe in place and completed in a matter of a few hours. He wanted to
pursue the idea of lining the lake overflow in question, so we went out to his site to take
a look at the conditions.

The metal overflow pipe definitely needed

some kind of repair. With the bottom of the
pipe rusting, the water from the lake was
flowing outside of the pipe causing erosion
around the pipe. Often the first sign of a
problem like this are sink holes in the ground
over the pipe. In this case Jim couldn’t afford
to have his road coming apart because of a
bad pipe. Digging and replacing this
particular pipe meant having a trench that
could go as deep as 25 feet right through the
middle of the dam.
m. Even if all the work was
done to the highest quality standards the
dam would not be as stableble as it was before
the work and the homeowners that used the
road as the only access to their house would
be disrupted for days by the construction.
We agreed that a CIPP liner was great
solution to the problem.

Once we settled on the solution we scheduled our camera truck to go out to the job site
and televise the pipe. The camera truck has s a video camera mounted on a robotic
transporter that allows it to dri
drive
ve through a pipe from one end to the other to assess the
condition of the pipe from the inside
inside.. We also use the camera to measure the length of
the pipe. With the total length and the assurance that there were no major blockages or
collapsed pipe we were able to make the liner.

On a sunny September day our crew headed out the job site.. Because the end of the
overflow pipe was out in the lake a few feet Jim hadad dug and exposed the pipe about
five feet back into the dam. We cut an access hole into the top of the metal pipe so we
could insert the liner and shoot it downstream. A 24”
diameter pipe liner is fairly heavy as far as liners go,
so it took almost an hour to get it into place. The liner
goes into the pipe as a flexible tube made of industrial
felt fabric that is saturated with resin. Once the tube
is inside the old pipe it is inflated with air then heated
up by injecting steam from our portable boiler
boile truck
into the air. The resin hardens or “cures
cures” when the
temperature rises above a certain point and the result
is a hard pipe that is formed to the inside of the
existing pipe. The finished CIPP resembles a PVC pipe inside of the old pipe; it is also
designed to last 50 years or more. In Jim’s case e everything
verything went well with the install
and the CIPP was in place and cured within a few hours. We cut the ends of the new

pipe flush to the old metal pipe and Jim just had to fit up a short piece of new corrugated
pipe to complete the inlet at the lake. At the end of the day he had a new pipe inside
that old metal pipe and one less thing to worry about.
