Issue 7, May 1999

OREDA (Offshore REliability DAta) is a project organization currently with ten oil companies participating: AGIP,
BP/Amoco, Chevron, Elf Petroleum, Esso/Exxon, Norsk Hydro, Phillips Petroleum, Saga Petroleum, Shell and Statoil.
OREDAs main objective is to provide a basis for improving safety and cost-effectiveness in the offshore oil and gas
industry by the collection and analysis of reliability data, and promoting the use and exchange of reliability know-how
among the participating companies.

Edition no. 3 of the OREDA Handbook
with data from Phase III was issued early
1998. Currently > 300 books are sold.

This seventh issue of the OREDA Newsletter

covers progress in the project since September
1998. This Newsletter is also available in electronic form on the OREDA Web-site:

A Master plan for the collection of data in
phase V was issued in June '98. This plan
includes both some recommendations for
prioritizing
equipment
candidates
and
estimating a price tag on data planned to be
collected. The very data collection is planned to
be finished June'99 and following subsequent
quality control and merging, the complete
database for phase V is planned to be issued
Sept.'99 latest. Data collection in this phase will
focus more on subsea equipment than in the
past. Based on the initial experiences it is
anticipated that the new automated data transfer
tool (ADT) will make this data collection more
cost-effective than in the previous phases.

The data for Phase IV were issued to the

participating companies mid November 97.
Data collected during the current project
Phase V are planned to be released to the
member companies Sept. '99. Phase V data
will contain more subsea data than in
previous phases.
The new software for the collection and
analysis of subsea data was finalised Sept.
'98. Since then some adjustments to this
software have been made. This software
tool has recently been applied by several
OREDA companies when collecting subsea
data for phase V.
A specific software module for automated
data transfer (ADT) from the individual
computerised maintenance management
systems (CMMS) to the OREDA database
has been completed and tested by several of
the companies. Significant reduction in
data collection cost has been experienced
with this tool

Several one-day training courses for the
OREDA users have been run by SINTEF
(topside + subsea). Viewgraphs giving an
overview of the OREDA project is available on
the OREDA Web-site (Powerpoint). OREDA
has been registered as Domain Name on
Internet. A Paper describing the ADT activity
will be jointly presented by SINTEF, Shell and
Cambridge Database Technologies at an international conference in Munich (ESREL) in
Sept.99.

A revised version of the DAS SW (release 4.8)
was issued Nov. 98. This release included
some corrections of the phase IV data plus
several improvements of the DAS SW. A new
release (4.9) is planned for June 99. This will
include a.o. verification of Y2K com-pliance as
well as some minor modifications. From the
OREDA Website it is possible to download and
run a tutorial on DAS.

Since release early August 98 several minor
improvements are included. Some of the
OREDA companies have applied the new SW
in their subsea data collection.

This SW has been developed to automate the
collection of data from individual company
CMMSs to the common OREDA database.
After testing by Shell, Statoil and SINTEF the
ADT tool was released in Nov.98 (SW release
4.8). Since then several companies have used
the tool in data collection projects. Shell
experienced 5 times reduction in cost for the
collection of maintenance data and 2 times
reduction for failure data. Similar savings are
also experienced by SINTEF (Chevron). A
tutorial on use of the ADT-tool has recently
been prepared for the OREDA companies.
