Sports Illustrated spotlights Senecas Schulte

Girls lacrosse midfielder selected as Sports Illustrateds High School Athlete of the Month for May
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
It is not every day that someone from a small town such as
Tabernacle gets recognized by a
multi-billion-dollar global magazine that is read by 23 million people each week.
This may be why Seneca senior
midfielder
Madison
Schulte
thought her mom was pulling a
fast one on her during her senior
trip when she broke the news that
she was selected to be Sports Illustrateds High School Athlete of
the Month.
Honestly, when my mom
texted me, I totally thought she
was messing with me, Schulte
said. It was crazy. I did not expect anything like that.
Sports Illustrated got wind of
Schultes story early in the season, and she was put in the running with numerous high school
athletes across the country to win
this award.
SI representatives came to
Seneca for two days to conduct interviews with people close to
Schulte and get some footage of
her playing and coaching.
Schultes passion for the game
cannot be satisfied by the countless hours that go into playing a
high school sport; she also coaches a U11 girls team on the side.
While Schulte and her parents

SKIP HARRIS/Special to The Sun

Midfielder Madison Schulte won the Sports Illustrated Player of the Month for May after returning to the
team for her senior year. She led the varsity team in scoring her freshman year and then abruptly decided to part ways with the game that shed been playing since the third grade.
had a bit of natural nerves going
into the interview with SI, the little girls had no problem grabbing
the microphone.
All of the girls were so excited.
They lined up after practice ask-

ing if they could all talk, Schulte

said.
As for the high school team,
they tried to keep the atmosphere
very stern to make sure they
came off as a group that was fo-

cused on nothing but winning

games. Its a task that can be
tricky at times for a silly group
that likes to keep it light at practice and focus on having as much
fun as they can.

My coach and I were cracking

up, we didnt know what to do,
Schulte said. We did have a really good practice, though. Maybe
we should wear microphones
more often!
Youll never catch anyone getting down on a teammate with
this team, even when they have a
bad game. Its constant positivity
from every direction, and it
seems to be working.
After being awarded a threeseed in the playoff bracket due to
the success it had in the regular
season, the team is now cruising
and is only two victories away
from being crowned Group 3
champions.
Its been so much fun. Thats
really the only word I can use to
describe it, Schulte said.
However, it has not always
been fun for Schulte.
After exploding onto the scene
her freshman year, earning a spot
on varsity and leading the team
in scoring, she was getting serious attention from a number of
big-time college programs.
Having her early teenage years
being dominated by visiting campuses and letters from college
coaches overwhelmed her. She
was being recruited, and she didnt even know if she wanted to be
recruited.

grades or a sports schedule are
over in the Lenape Regional High
School District.
The district recently released a
new mobile app for students, staff
and parents. The LRHSD Mobile
App can be downloaded for free at
the iTunes App Store or on
Google Play.
John Donaldson, director of
television services for the district, played a big role in the development of the app. Donaldson
said the district recognized how
students and parents are on their
mobile devices more than ever
and were looking for ways to access information easier and
faster.
With students and parents always on the go, the development
of a mobile app was the next logical step in being able to provide
them with the information that

they need at anytime, from anywhere, Donaldson said.

The app brings many of the
features found on the district
website to users phones. Everything from news updates, social
media posts and athletic schedules were included.
Donaldson said one of the most
important features is the ability
to view individual information
such as grades.
One of the most powerful features of the LRHSD app is the
ability for students and parents to
access mobile-friendly views of
grades, assignments and cafeteria
balances, he said.
The app also allows the user to
customize what they see on their
phone. Users can select from
which high schools they would
like to see news.

BOE changes school start times

Elementary school to begin at 8:45 a.m., middle school at 7:45 a.m.
By SEAN LAJOIE
The Sun
Tabernacle Elementary School
students will be pleased to hear

they will be able to stay in bed for

an extra 15 minutes each morning after the Board of Educations
most recent resolution was
passed to change the start times
for both schools in the district.
The elementary school will
now begin at 8:45 a.m. and close at
3:15 p.m., while the middle school
day will start 15 minutes earlier
at 7:45 a.m. and end at 2:15 p.m.
Just like the high schools recent time changes, ours were implemented to capture the lost instructional time, Superintendent George Rafferty said. Were
looking to improve efficiency and
enhance our childrens education.
This idea has been in the works
for multiple years as the district
has been closely monitoring bus
pickup and drop-off times.
District transportation supervisor Rob Hogan has been at the

core of this proposal.

Nine of our 14 routes from the
middle school are longer than 30
minutes, so its not possible for
our drivers with our buses to get
the children to school on time,
and its not possible for them to
get back to the elementary school
to pick them up on time, Hogan
said at the previous board meeting.
Times needed to be changed at
both schools to allow safe time intervals between the middle and
elementary school bus routes.
This bus system of 15 drivers
transports 379 students daily to
and from OMS and 390 students
for TES.
The districts furthest bus
route is 29.5 miles roundtrip, and
it is one of the routes serviced
four times a day, twice for OMS

Award winning NJ remodeling firm is recognized as of one of nation's Big 50 Remodelers

Amiano & Son Construction a small family run remodeling and design contractor located in Tabernacle, NJ recently
joined many of our Nation's finest in the industry. With the ever debatable issue of reliable, quality contractors
going on in the Tri-State market it was an honor to achieve this prestigious award.
Tabernacle, NJ May 13, 2015 Lou & Wendy Amiano owners of Amiano & Son Construction, LLC
, has been selected by REMODELING magazine
to join the REMODELING Big50. The Big50
awards were presented at a gala dinner at the Remodeling Leadership Conference in Washington,
DC, on May 7, 2015. The 2015 Big50 winners are
featured in the May issue of REMODELING, a
national trade publication read by more than
130,000 professional remodeling contractors, with
longer profiles of the winners posted on the REMODELING website, remodelingmag.com.
Each year since 1986, the REMODELING Big50
inducts 50 owners of remodeling companies that
have set exceptionally high standards for professionalism and integrity through exemplary business practices, craftsmanship, and impact in
their community or the industry at large. Big50
remodelers run successful, often growing, companies of various sizes that have taken the lead
in raising industry standards.
The Big50 selection process has become increas-

ingly rigorous in recent years, and the result, REMODELING editors believe, is one of the
strongest classes to date. Uniting the 2015 inductees are high standards and a determination
to excel taking the opportunity to build efficiencies into their systems and processes ensuring that they are poised to meet their sales,
production, and customer-service goals and continue to thrive, according to REMODELING.
We are very honored to receive this distinction,
we have worked hard to achieve recognizable success in the industry says Lou Amiano , Owner
of Amiano & Son Construction. The award recognizes excellence and leadership, and we are
privileged to be named to this select group of remodelers.
REMODELING editors, columnists, industry
leaders, and the companies themselves make the
nominations each year. Following a lengthy evaluation and interview process, the editors select
the 50 individuals who exemplify the best of the
industry that year, and who have something to

offer other remodelers in proven practices.

REMODELING, published by Hanley Wood, is
the leading publication in the home improvement
industry. REMODELING has and continues to be
the indispensable tool that remodelers cannot do
withoutdelivering the business know-how,
product and technical information that home improvement pros need to help make smart decisions that will shape their project success.
Amiano & Son Construction is a family run design/build remodeling firm. The company
boasts ownership who practiced the trade since
1968. The company is currently run by husband
and wife team Lou & Wendy Amiano. Lou &
Wendy offer clients the unique experience of
"getting it." They get the entire process of remodeling and what it takes to get to a mutually agreeable remodeling project for clients. "Planning is

Grads: Savor the final days of your high school career

n just a few short weeks, high
school seniors throughout New
Jersey will be wrapping up their
final days of class, taking their final
high school tests and walking onto
their high school field one more time
for graduation.
Its an exciting time in the life of a
young man or young woman. The final
weeks of high school, the graduation
ceremony, the hugs and congratulations following, the celebrations that
will last throughout the summer and
the packing for, the drive to and the arrival at college are memories graduates will remember fondly.
To all the grads out there, while you
may want to rush these last days so
school can be out for summer, and so
high school can be out forever, remember to savor every remaining moment.
This may not mean much to you
right now, but there are experiences
you will have in these final days, these

replicate again. There are people you
will graduate with some friends,
some acquaintances, some whom you
grew up with whom you may never
see again.
There are some whom you are close
with now who you will grow apart
from over the years, and there are
some whom you will grow closer to as
your lives change.
Those wistful days of no responsibility will be behind you. Soon, you
will be on your own. You will have the
freedom to eat pizza for breakfast, stay

and skip a class if you want to note:
we dont recommend that last one.
The label high school student
came with a lot of restrictions on your
freedom, but it also gave you a get-outof-jail-free card, or cards. Once graduation is over, that label goes away. All
freedoms given to an American adult
will be yours.
But so, too, will all the consequences
of your actions. The decisions you
make from as serious as do I study
for this test? to should I eat another
burrito? will all have results that
will affect your life. Its a lot of responsibility. Its a good thing, for sure, but
it can also be a scary thing, becoming
an adult.
So, while you still have the option,
live life as a kid one last time. Savor
these last days of high school. And be
confident that you will do just fine.
Good luck and congratulations!

Writer: Some Tabernacle parents
need to do their homework
There is a small but vocal group of Tabernacle residents, primarily some parents,
who are upset with the Tabernacle Board
of Education and the superintendent,
George Rafferty, for perceived inaction or
wrongful actions. They are so angry and
frustrated that they have taken to yelling
accusations in public meetings, and have
posted Fire George Rafferty signs
throughout town. Unfortunately, many of
these people seem to be so horribly uninformed of the issues they are so passionate
about that it would be laughable if it
werent so sad and dangerous.
In an effort to try to help educate the

public on some of the issues that they are

so misinformed of, one resident at the May
11 meeting asked the board to pose four
questions to their attorney who was present (historically their attorney has not
been at their public meetings). The questions were: 1) What are the website requirements, if any, under the Sunshine
Law for school boards, especially as it relates to posting of agendas prior to meetings?
2) Explain why the board is
unable/unwilling to discuss personnel
matters in public? 3) If a non-tenured
teacher is not offered a spot next year by
the superintendent, what is the process by
which that decision can be reviewed by the
board? 4) If a board were to break a contract with a superintendent, what are the

potential financial and legal ramifications

to the board and the district?
Unfortunately, the board president declined to ask the attorney these questions
at the time. If he had, quite a bit of the
public nonsense could have been stopped.
Instead, the uninformed public cheered on
the resident in question, thinking he was
trying to help their cause.
In brief, the answers to these four questions are as follows:
1) Unlike some other entities such as fire
districts, school boards arent required to
maintain a website at all, let alone are
there requirements for its content. People
claim on Facebook that the board is violatplease see LETTER, page 11

and twice for TES.
The busing computer program
the district uses puts the optimal
time for a bus completing that
trip at 39 minutes, beyond the old
half-hour difference in middle
and elementary school start
times.
This program also doesnt factor in specific variables such as
traffic, weather and children who
are a little sluggish in the morning and take a bit longer than expected to get to the bus stop.
When you add inclement
weather, half-day schedules as
well as early dismissals to the
equation, it is not possible for us
to maintain timely schedules
given our present bus routes,
Rafferty said.
A secondary driving force behind the lost instructional time
was the safety, given the time intervals between bus routes.
Drivers are very, very conscientious about getting the children
to school safely and on time,
Hogan said. There was a driver
upset because she was late due to
the dirt road she was driving on
being covered with ice and she
only had 30 minutes.
Despite mixed responses to the
change, the administration and
the board of education assured
parents they always aims to ensure the most educationally beneficial and safe learning environment for all students.
Whenever the school district
identifies areas for improvement
that will benefit students as well
as improve teaching and learning, the district will always take
action, Rafferty said.

ing law by not publishing agendas early enough; in fact, the
board isnt required to publish
them at all.
2) New Jersey law prevents
boards from talking about personnel matters without taking certain steps first, including issuing
the employee a Rice notice first,
and offering the employee an opportunity to decide whether the
discussion should be public or
private. If the employee is not
properly noticed, the board is not
allowed to make any statements
whatsoever, no matter how much
they may or may not want to. So
when the public brings up employee/personnel matters, the
board has no choice but to remain
silent or face a lawsuit.
3) One of the louder issues of
late, the head of the special edu-

cation department, Mr. Tirico,

has not been asked to come back
next year.
The public has been quite vocal
on insisting that the board overturn Raffertys decision. However, the only vehicle the board has
at its disposal is to hold a Donaldson hearing, which Mr. Tirico has
to ask for. To my knowledge, he
has not yet done that. Therefore,
the boards hands are tied there
is nothing the board can do on
that until Mr. Tirico asks for the
Donaldson hearing. No amount of
yelling at the board will change
that.
4) As I stated, there are signs
around town to Fire George Rafferty. However, its not that simple. Rafferty is under contract
with the board. Assuming he has
not broken his end of the contract
and has not broken the law or
done anything else that actually
warrants termination, to fire Rafferty would be a breach of contract, putting the board and the

district at risk of severe financial

and legal ramifications. The public has been vocal against the
board having raised taxes just to
keep services at a constant level;
how would the same members of
the public feel if the board had to
cut services to defend against a
costly breach of contract suit
brought on by their own demands?
There are many other examples where this vocal minority
makes noise and general statements without specificity or
knowledge. It is obvious that
these people need to do their
homework and actually understand the implications of what
they are arguing for, and learn
where, when and why the board is
simply unable to take the desired
action. Most importantly, I challenge all Tabernacle residents,
come November, to ensure that
they elect people who are actually
knowledgeable on the issues.

The school district began the
process in February 2014.
Focus groups consisting of parents, students and staff were put
together to help give the development team ideas on what to put in
the app.
The response from the student, teacher and parent focus
groups was enthusiastic and full
of great ideas, Donaldson said.
Donaldson said the district also
spoke with several app development companies and other school
districts that implemented simi-

lar apps. The district began developing the app in the summer of
2014 and has spent most of the
2014-15 school year perfecting it.
Recently, select members of the
school community got the chance
to test the app ahead of the release.
The district used the feedback
from beta testing to make further
adjustments.
Over recent months, a small
group of students, parents and
staff have been beta testing the
app in advance of the public release, Donaldson said.
Donaldson said the district has
received positive feedback from
the school community. In the first
week of its release, the app re-

ceived more than 3,300 downloads.

Donaldson said the app will
continue to develop over time,
and welcomed feedback and suggestions from the school community.
We anticipate that as staff,
students and parents become
more familiar with the app that
they will provide us with new and
innovative ways to make the already powerful app even better in
the future, he said.
The district has created a tutorial video and webpage to guide
users through the app. The video
and other information about the
app
can
be
found
at
www.lrhsd.org/App.

Schulte to attend Penn State

SCHULTE
Continued from page 1
I felt like everything was happening too fast. I needed more
time to think about things, I just
needed a break, Schulte said.
So that is exactly what she did.
Going into her sophomore year
as an all-conference midfielder,
Schulte abruptly decided to hang
up her cleats and walk away from
the game.
Taking a step back really
helped her find herself and be a
lot happier. Nevertheless, some
things were just not the same.
Fellow senior Megan Drum
and Schulte have been inseparable since they met on their thirdgrade lacrosse team.
It was very weird when spring
came around and I would look to
hang out with her after school
and then Id remember she had a

game or practice, Schulte said.

coach
Morgan
Schultes
Crothers made it an ongoing
habit to jokingly ask her former
superstar if she would be coming
to tryouts.
However, one day before the
season this spring, Schulte gave
her a different answer and decided she would be in fact attending
tryouts.
It was just a perfect opportunity to get involved with people
that Ive been around for so long
that Im not going to be seeing
much of next year as we all go off
to different colleges, Schulte
said.
Though she focused solely on
bringing the fun back to the game
she had played all of her life, it is
human nature to occasionally
wonder what could have been.
The thought does run through
my mind. What else could have
happened and where would I be
today had I stayed with the team

my
sophomore year and
kept playing,
Schulte said.
But overall, I
dont have any
regrets.
Im
still going to
the school that
I wanted to go
to all along.
SCHULTE
Schulte will
be attending
Penn State in the fall. Though she
is not sure if she will be playing
on the team, she will definitely be
staying involved with the sport,
whether through intramurals,
clubs or even coaching.
After considering entering the
business field, she quickly decided it wasnt for her.
Im not the type of personality
for sitting in an office all day or
going from meeting to meeting,
Schulte said. Im looking at
teaching or coaching at a high
school level or a younger level.
High school and college sports
can be very demanding with the
number of hours it requires of
athletes.
Maddy has been a pleasure to
coach over the two years she has
played for Seneca, Crothers said.
She is extremely coachable and
will do whatever it takes to put
forth her best effort for every
game.
