If you are comfortable with facts and figures, a good communicator and keen to develop a solid
grounding of the building industry, our National Diploma in Quanity Surveying could be for you.
Construction is one of our country's largest industries and our qualification provides a number of
attractive job opportunities.
Our two-year National Diploma will provide you with the ability to work as a quantity surveyor where
you will be responsible for the crucial budgeting end of a construction project estimating costs,
quantifying materials and administering finances during the job.
Core subjects you will study include construction systems, materials, environment, services, building
law and contract administration.
You will also study specific quantity surveying topics like measurement, estimation and cost
management.
In addition, you will develop good communication skills essential for work as a quantity surveyor.

Entry requirements
Academic Requirements
12 credits in NCEA English Level 1 and 36 credits in NCEA Level 2 and 12 credits in mathematics.
Alternative Requirements
Evidence of literacy, numeracy and an ability to study at the appropriate level. This can be through
study, work and/or life experience. CPIT literacy and numeracy assessments are available.

If English is not your first language you may also be required to provide evidence of your English
language skills as listed below. If you have no evidence of your English language skills and are a
New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, contact us for an assessment.
IELTS 6.0 Academic (no lower than 6.0 in all subtests). For acceptable alternatives refer to the

Career opportunities
As a Quantity Surveyor you will be an expert in estimating and managing the costs involved in small to
medium size building and construction projects of limited complexity. Typically you will get involved at
every stage of the project to ensure the project stays within the client's budget and payments are
made to contractors.
The constant interaction with clients, architects, engineers and builders and the range in locations are
what make surveying such an interesting and varied career. Once you have established yourself in the
role you will be able to extend your work to include larger and/or more complex building projects.
Graduates may be employed by a private firm of quantity surveyors, building contractors, local or
central government agencies, subcontractors or suppliers.
Study pathways
For further study you could consider degree courses in construction, economics or management.
