3.1.2 Downloading Software Tool
Cat Composer Service Technician is available to download off the OEM Solutions web
page.
https://oemsolutions.cat.com/Software_Support
The user must have CWS access to get to the web site. Cat Composer Service
Technician is a licensed software package. License subscriptions need to be renewed on
a yearly basis. There is an on-line purchase system available to purchase the software
(starting March 2014). There is additional documentation on the tool at the above site.
3.1.3 Installing Software
Double click on the file downloaded and follow the prompts to install Cat Composer
Service Technician. The tool has multi-language support, but the application specific
information is all in English. Administrative privilege is needed on the personal
computer to accomplish the installation. Full instructions on installation are covered in
Appendix A.
3.1.4 Registering and Retrieving License
The user must register in the licensing system. Cat Composer Service Technician may be
used to register in the licensing system too. An internet connection must be available the
first time Cat Composer Service Technician is used. Depending on the network, there
may need to be a proxy entered. If so, the following dialog box is shown. The proxy
information is dependent on the users company proxy settings. Enter the proxy and Test
Connection. If the connection works, Apply Settings and proceed to the next step.
Otherwise, call your companys computer services department for help on this step.

The information shown on the web page is particular to a customer/dealer having
authorization to the page.
Loading software onto an ECM is commonly referred to as flashing the ECM. This
feature is available in Cat Composer Service Technician through the icon all the way over
to the right with the red arrow entering ECM. When hovering over the icon, it states the
feature as WinFlash.
The first thing that happens when the icon for flashing is selected is to connect to the
ECMs on the datalink.

To correctly run Cat Composer Service Technician, the setup looks like the following:
The computer has the software installed, license subscription and registration completed.
The computer has the cabling for the Communications Adapter connected to it and the
other side of the Communications Adapter is connected to the Service Tool Connector.
The Service Tool Connector has wiring that connects up to power, the keyswitch and the
ECM. Power is typically sent to the Communications Adapter if the disconnect on the
machine is set to allow the machine to be on. The keyswitch is typically wired that when
it is on, the ECM is powered on and connected.

If the message Unable to load DLLs for communication adapter appears while using
the CA3 (Communications Adapter 3), perform the following steps:
1. Uninstall CA3 Toolkit through Programs/Features (Windows 7 & 8)
2. Reinstall the toolkit through CA3 Toolkit standalone installation
Or
Through the service tool installation package
7.3
When there are not 2 terminating resistors on the CAN line, the following message is
displayed. The message is the same as when the ECM does not have power.
7.4
ECMs have firmware inside of them indicating that they are an OEM ECM. This is done
and checked to make sure that software intended for an OEM ECM is flashed onto an
OEM ECM.
Cat Composer Service Technician is made to be used with OEM ECMs and Cat ET Cat
Electronic Technician is made to be used with Cat ECMs. The engine ECMs are always
Cat ECMs. The other ECMs used on a project are dependent on how they are serviced.
If a CAT ECM is attempted to be connected with Cat Composer Service Technician, the
following error dialog appears. Messages like these help protect users from flashing the
wrong ECM with the wrong software.
The OEM ECMs and displays that are made to be used with Cat Composer Service
Technician are the following:

If unsure whether the above is really indicating an incorrect type of ECM, go to the
WinFlash ( )area. In the WinFlash area, the error message looks like the following:
If those error messages are seen, then the tool that should be used is ET to work with
those ECMs. The other possibility is the ECM that was meant to be interacted with the
tool was incorrectly picked and the service connector connected to the ECM needs to be
found. There can be more than one service connector on the machine.
7.5
A Location Code is used to distinguish between ECMs when multiple identical ECMs are
on the same data link. This is a hardware wiring configuration to the ECM. If the
Location Code does not match, the message below is shown. This message is shown to
protect the ECM from being flashed with the wrong software.

46
Another ECM with the correct location code must be selected or another flash file with
the correct location code must be selected.
NOTE: It is also possible when the machine is initially being wired, that this message
appears because of a wiring issue. Please refer to the table in this document on Location
Code Pin Out (7.3.2).
7.5.1
In the screen shot below, the requested file to be loaded into the ECM has a Location
Code of 2.
In the screen shot below, the software flash file currently loaded on the ECM has a
Location Code of 4 and the hardware pin out is set to 4 (1). The flash file that has been
requested to load (see above) has a Location Code of 2.

47
Since there is a Location Code conflict, the software cannot be loaded onto the ECM.
This is done to protect from having the wrong software loaded onto an ECM.
NOTE: The Location Code ID shown under the ECM Values (1) shows how the
hardware is set. The hardware is set for a location code 4.
7.5.2
If Location Code is being used, J1-32 must be grounded. Location code is an option
used to distinguish ECMs so that when flashing ECMs it notifies the user before
overwriting a software flash file with an incorrect software flash file.

The Communications Adapter 3 has a couple of ways that it can be configured. It can be
configured to be powered by both the computer and the Service Tool connector or only
through the Service Tool Connector. There are fewer issues if the communications
adapter is powered just through the Service Tool Connector. It is highly suggested to
change to this configuration. This setup can be changed through running a utility on the
Communications adapter application to USB Power Off.
