Basics of Street Lighting

Street Lighting is one of the most important and expensive responsibility

of the city.
Lighting can account for 10-38% of the total energy bill in typical cities
worldwide
Energy efficient technologies and design can cut the street lighting cost
dramatically ( 25%-60%)
A well designed street light should permit users to travel at night with
good visibility, in safety and comfort, while reducing energy costs.

Classification of Roads
A1 For very important routes with rapid and dense traffic where
the only considerations are the safety and speed of the traffic
and the comfort of drivers
A2 For main roads with considerable mixed traffic like main city
streets, arterial roads, and thoroughfares
B1 For secondary roads with considerable traffic such as local
traffic routes, and shopping streets
B2 For secondary roads with light traffic
C
For residential and unclassified roads not included in the
previous groups
D For bridges and flyovers
E
For towns and city centers
F
For roads with special requirements such as roads near
airports, and railways

Existing Solutions
o

Street Lights are being controlled using simple time switches

Operates at pre programmed set times irrespective of twilight or

sunset/sunrise times leading to a wastage of energy

Are without any additional control features like Off hours after midnight or
Alternate pattern in lighting so as to save energy during light traffic
conditions prevailing after midnight.

Are without any remote control actuation of output channels during heavy
clouding or excessive mist.

Do not take into account of fluctuating power supply that reduce lamp life.

Street Light Automation

o

The objective of the system is to operate and monitor the street lights,
and to record and the report failure event to take corrective actions
immediately.
The automation of the street light consists of a feeder pillar interface unit
and server having WEB based SCADA software. The entire feeder pillar
shall connect to the server through GPRS.
Each Street light feeder pillar shall have appropriate antenna, GSM
modem, Feeder interface unit and major switchgears with potential free
terminals for communication with Feeder interface unit.
We can see the status of the street light through user login on internet
from anywhere in the world.

Features

Easy to install with wireless ( GPRS) connectivity to data server

32 bit micro controller based embedded system for control
panel
Remote Control ( On-Off)
Remote Monitoring ( V,I, {P,Kwh})
Time based On-Off
Turn On/Off time based on configurable from SCADA on
fortnight basis
Ambient Light intensity based On-Off during IR sensing

Astronomical Time-switch based automation with remote control using GSM Technology

Astronomical Time-switch, GSM Technology & Voltage regulation

Monitoring & Verification

An entire street lighting system is retrofitted with various Energy

Conservation Measure (ECM)s including lighting retrofits (replacements of
lights and fixtures), a power conditioning unit, a dimming mechanism, and
supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems. In this case the
ECMs may have individual contributions to the total savings and may also
interact with other ECMs (e.g., reducing lighting impacts due to controlled
voltage supply); the overall effect may therefore be difficult to determine
if only individual measures are taken.

Challenges

The Specifications for LED Street Lights need to come into force in order to
maintain quality standards
The Testing facility should be in place in order to test the Street Light as
per the Specifications
Government Initiative and promotion of LED Street Light as today
Government would be the biggest customer
Various stakeholders should actively promote Energy Efficient Lights in the
projects
Solar LED Street Light Still a dream!!
