ur programmes are
created in collaboration

Industry accreditation, placements,
international links, visiting tutors
and academic staff that are highly
engaged in their fields make our

In this prospectus, youll see
the full range of postgraduate
programmes on offer as well as
information on some of the lifechanging research were doing at

of backgrounds our students come
from, representing six of more
than 100 nationalities who call
Edinburgh Napier home. Meanwhile

CUTTINGEDGE
FACILITIES
FOR
CUTTINGEDGE
STUDY
When you choose a
postgraduate course,
your surroundings are
important. You want to live
in an interesting, welcoming
city, and you want great
facilities for learning,
studying and making new
friends and connections.
F ACILITIES TO TAKE
YOU FURTHER
Our facilities can also inspire, opening
up new opportunities and career paths.
Facilities such as multimedia language
labs, industry-standard music studios,
broadcast studios and computer games
development labs will help you pursue your
career aspirations or discover new passions.
Our School of Computing has some of the
most impressive IT facilities in a UK university,
including specialist labs for Cisco networking,
embedded and wireless systems, and
Linux, Cisco and Microsoft technologies.
Our Sport and Exercise Science laboratories
are among the best in the UK, and include
a human performance laboratory and
a biomechanics laboratory. We recently
opened an environmental chamber where
researchers can test athletic performance
in extreme conditions, including high
and low temperatures and humidity.
The chamber is the largest facility of its
kind in Scotland, and can replicate high
altitude conditions up to the equivalent
of Everest Base Camp. As well as
observing performance, our researchers
and students can test equipment and
clothing in the most extreme conditions
- all from the comfort of Edinburgh.
At the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Social
Care, we have a 1,000 sq m Simulation and
Clinical Skills Centre. It even includes a High
Dependency Unit (HDU) simulator suite which
replicates an intensive care treatment area.
Other facilities at the Sighthill campus range
from Biomed labs with confocal microscope,
histology suite and real-time PCR suite, to
our capacity to work with anaerobic microorganisms in our Biotech programmes.
These diverse and impressive facilities
have a common theme: to enrich the skills
and career prospects of our students.
Theyll help you gain skills and experiences
relevant to employers all over the world.

the Business School at Craiglockhart has
calculated lighting, specialised acoustics,
natural ventilation and ergonomic seating.
Our Virtual Learning Environment, Moodle,
allows you to access electronic teaching
materials wherever and whenever you
want. You can access lecture notes before
or after your classes, check the details
of an assessment or find coursework
materials. Its available 24 hours a day
another way in which our IT and learning
facilities back your learning ambitions.

This accreditation shows that our courses meet
international benchmarks for HLT programmes, and are
suited to the needs of these industries all over the world.

courses, we joined a select group of highly respected
universities across the world. The accreditation is
recognised in regions as far apart as North America,
Australasia, the Middle East, Asia Pacific, and the EU.

A passport to a
job in engineering
When you choose an engineering programme,
you want to be sure it will satisfy the current
and future requirements of employers around
the world. So how do you check this?
One way is to look for the Engineering Council
accreditation. After all, this is what many employers seek,
both in the UK and beyond. The accreditation - which
youll see on numerous Edinburgh Napier postgraduate
programmes - shows that your degree meets the
highest standards set by the engineering profession.
It also shows that on top of technical knowledge,
youll have experience of teamwork, design, and all
the other professional skills youll immediately need
to demonstrate in the engineering workplace.

Social change
through
sporting
spectacle
With eight years until kick-off of
the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the
Business School at Edinburgh
Napier is working with Stenden
University Qatar on a project
which aims to help promote
healthier living in a society with
relatively low levels of exercise
and high rates of obesity and
associated health problems.
Were identifying opportunities
to influence behaviour. We believe
learnings will deliver an immediate
benefit in Qatar itself, and go
on to inform future policy far
beyond the countrys borders,
says Dr Eleni Theodoraki.
Sustaining a
national
delicacy
Dr Karen Diele of Edinburgh Napiers School
of Life, Sports & Social Sciences has been
leading projects studying the ecological
role and the artisanal fishery of Brazilian
caranguejo-u crabs. These crabs are
a key species in the mangrove forests
that grow at the interface between land
and sea and help sustain a productive
ecosystem. This crab is also a national
delicacy, and theres a lucrative market
supplied by local crab fishermen.
Her research has been instrumental in
improving fisheries legislation aimed at
the sustainable use of this species, which
is also a major interest to fishermen
and the wider community. Working with
Dr Anders Schmidt and other Brazilian
collaborators, she has now established
a North to South mass mate-searching
monitoring network to help improve the
temporal placement of crab capture bans.
My research addresses many applied
questions that are of direct interest to the
local people. Working closely with fishermen
and managers to deliver solutions has
been a great experience, says Dr Diele.

Building on a
thin membrane
Researchers from the Universitys Institute
for Sustainable Construction have been
working with Icopal UK Ltd the worlds
leading geomembrane specialists since
2008. Thin membranes may not look like
much theyre mostly industrial textiles and
other material supplied in rolls, and when
theyre in place, theyre completely hidden
from sight but they can have a profound
impact on the performance of a building.
Together theyve developed a range of
revolutionary thin membrane vibration
isolators to reduce noise levels and
heat loss through cavity walls. Several
patents have been granted, leading to
nine new products reaching the market.

Anna Armstrong
MSc Health Administration
Anna, from Michigan in the USA, has fallen in love with Scotland
and is full of praise for the support she has received from
both Edinburgh Napier and the National Health Service
Im in the third trimester of
my Masters course in Health
Administration and Im doing my
thesis on how recent reforms
have affected patient safety.
Its all about numbers. There is a
huge correlation between patient
safety and financial efficiency - if
you have poor patient safety, its
going to cost you a lot more.
Im here to learn how a functioning
healthcare system works. During a
study abroad to Aberdeen in 2011
I got really ill and had an amazing
experience with the NHS. People
here complain because they dont
know the difference. I understand
that good isnt good enough but
its so different and so much
better here compared to the US.
I like Edinburgh Napier a lot. My
tutors, Jackie Johnston and Libby
Campbell, are amazing. The first thing
Jackie said to us was: I will never be
mean to you. My job is to make your
time here as brilliant as possible.

T
of our nursing
postgraduate
education is distance
learning. I think
this is good for the
students because
it gives them a real
feel that there are
massive differences
in healthcare and
how we execute that
in different places.
I work with the postgraduate
students to help them get their
qualifications, then they keep me up
to date clinically - I go to visit them.
We then work together to produce
study days for other people or
members of certain groups that will
help educate or fund other nurses
so its an ongoing process. There are
a lot of projects that students have
taken forward that have made a big
difference to patient care and thats
ultimately what were here for.

You are strongly advised to apply as early as
possible to ensure that there is sufficient time to
process your application and apply for your visa
(if applicable). If you have applied for a course
at Edinburgh Napier University and you are
not a national of the European Economic Area,
you may need to apply for Tier 4 general entry
clearance (visa) before travelling to the UK.
All students must use a Confirmation of
Acceptance for Studies (CAS) to apply for their
visas. Edinburgh Napier University will issue a
unique CAS number to all students who have an
unconditional offer of study and who have paid
a prepayment of 3,500 towards their fees. This
number confirms that the Home Office has given
the university permission to sponsor your Tier 4
application. If you apply for your Tier 4 visa using
an Edinburgh Napier CAS, your Tier 4 visa will only
be valid for study at Edinburgh Napier University.
There have been major changes to UK immigration
policy and it is mandatory for all students coming
to the UK for longer than six months to obtain
Entry Clearance in their own country before
travelling to the UK. You must ensure that you
check the UK Visas website (www.ukvisas.gov.
uk/en/) for the most up-to-date information as
there are frequent changes. For students coming to
the UK for a course of less than six months there
is now a Student Visitor category of visa which
you must apply for either as Entry Clearance, if
you are a visa national, or on arrival to the UK
if you are not a visa national. Student Visitors
cannot apply to extend their stay in the UK as a
Student Visitor or as a Tier 4 (General) Student.
