Go through each one of the following. Your rough draft should be typed in 12 point Times New Roman
font, double spaced. You will need to read and rework your research paper more than once to adequately
complete this form. Your rough draft will have corrections and revisions. Use post-it-notes to yourself
concerning things that you need to change for your final paper.

1. Read through the entire essay. Cross out the following words and phrases: you, your, yours, I
think, I feel, I believe, in my opinion, would, should, could, may, might, I, me, my, This shows that,
as a result. Do most of your sentences begin in the same way, i.e., the character’s name? You
need to vary the beginning of the sentences, i.e. pronoun, prepositional phrase, subordinate clause.
Make these corrections now and reprint your essay.
2. Now, check your spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Remember not to rely on grammar/spell
check to point out all of the errors. For example, if you have a run-on sentence that grammar
check does not catch, and you do not correct it, it is still a run-on, and you will lose points if it is
not properly punctuated. Take your time with this step.
3. Highlight your endnotes. Check your Write Source book to make sure that the format you used is
correct.
4. Your works cited page should follow the MLA format.
5. Go back once more and read each chunk. Be sure that your sentences have some sort of logical
connection. Check and make sure that you have introduced each CD (Concrete Detail) with for
example or some other transition. Remember that your quotations must have some sort of
introduction. You cannot just stick them in your paper and expect the reader to make the
connection. The introduction to the quotation should connect it to the rest of the paragraph. Can
you see the connection between your CM (commentary), CD (concrete detail), and TS (topic
sentence)? If you cannot, you need to make the necessary revisions so that the connection is clear.
6. Circle and connect repeated words. (This is also called circle and line.) In your final draft replace
the repeated words with CORRECT synonyms.
7. Fill in the following information about each paragraph:

Your entire paper should be between 1200 and 1500 words (5-7 pages). If it is not, you will need
to add to your paper in the area/areas where it is short. The best way to do this is to go back to the CM,
reread it, and stretch it out by adding descriptive phrases.

9. When you make all the necessary corrections to your paper, read it from the beginning to the end. Take
your time so that you can do your best. Have one of your parents read it, to help make sure that you have
corrected all of the problems, and ask them to sign below.
Your rough draft will not be accepted without a parent’s signature.
