Production Report (500words) To Make Dad Proud

To Make Dad Proud has been a very challenging yet rewarding experience for me as I feel that the
quality of the work that I have produced is something that I never thought I would be able to achieve
on my own. I am particularly pleased with the way that the animation has turned out in terms of the
semi-realistic cartoon style and the detail of the paintings that I produced for the concept art and
environment designs.
Firstly, with regard to the initial stages of production, I had a bit of trouble with the narrative of the
story as this is something Im not as strong at. Although, with a bit of guidance and feedback from
the lecturers, I was able to address this and produce a decent plot for my animation. Even though I
am still not 100% with the narrative, I wanted the animation and concept art of the project to be the
main focus. After spending a couple of weeks on the story, I then started the production process of
animating my characters. For reference, I acted out scenes myself as well as getting other people to
act in order to gain more insight into how the characters would move. Furthermore, during this
process I developed my concept designs that I had created in pre-production as I wanted to improve
them to make them solid. By receiving feedback and looking at tutorials, this really helped me to
improve my skills and push my animations and designs so that I could strive for a good quality piece
of work. As well as producing my own references, I often watched different animations and cartoons
for inspiration and to learn different styles and see how characters moved. This was really helpful as
I understood better how to portray my own characters. In addition, I looked into how to improve my
composition and colour theory work too as I changed them numerous times throughout production.
This was a valuable experience because I noticed a difference in the quality of my work straight away.
In the remaining weeks of production, I continued to develop my animations by re-addressing
particular poses in order to make them better and started to line them neatly so that they were
ready to be coloured and shaded. Even though I was able to complete my final animation for the
hand-in, there are still adjustments that I would like to make ready for the London Show. For
example, I would like to maybe add a bit more animation to the narrative in order to make the
journey look a bit longer. Also, I would like to re-address some scenes where I have drawn the boy
looking down as I think I could draw his features better.
Overall, I am pleased with what I have been able to produce and I particularly enjoyed learning more
about the pipeline of creating a 2D animation and I hope this will help to prepare me for the industry.
