    BhaktimovementsinHinduismduringthemedievalperiodthatrejectedcasteism.Nandanar,alowcasteHinducleric,alsorejected
    casteismandacceptedDalits.
    SomeothermovementsinHinduismhavealsowelcomedlowercastesintotheirfold,theearliestbeingtheBhaktimovementsofthe
    medievalperiod.EarlyDalitpoliticsinvolvedmanyHindureformmovementswhicharoseprimarilyasareactiontotheadventof
    ChristianMissionariesinIndiaandtheirattemptstoconvertDalitstoChristianity,whowereattractedtotheprospectofescapingthe
    castesystem.
    Inthe19thCentury,theBrahmoSamajunderRajaRamMohanRoy,activelycampaignedagainstuntouchabilityandCasteism.The
    AryaSamajfoundedbySwamiDayanandalsorenounceddiscriminationagainstDalits.SriRamakrishnaParamahamsaandhisgreatest
    discipleSwamiVivekanandawhofoundedtheRamakrishnaMissionthatparticipatedintheemancipationofDalits.UppercasteHindus,
    suchasMannathuPadmanabhanalsoparticipatedinmovementstoabolishUntouchabilityagainstDalits,openinghisfamilytemplefor
    Dalitstoworship.NarayanaGuru,apiousHinduandanauthorityontheVedas,alsocriticizedcasteismandcampaignedfortherights
    oflowercasteHinduswithinthecontextofHinduism.
    ThefirstuppercastetempletoopenlywelcomeDalitsintotheirfoldwastheLaxminarayanTempleinWardhaintheyear1928(the
    movewasspearheadedbyreformerJamnalalBajaj).
    ThecastesystemhasalsobeencriticizedbymanyIndiansocialreformers.Somereformers,suchasJyotiraoPhuleandIyotheeThass
    arguedthatthelowercastepeopleweretheoriginalinhabitantsofIndia,andwereconqueredintheancientpastbyBrahmin
    invaders.MahatmaGandhicoinedthetermHarijanaeuphemisticwordforuntouchable,literallymeaningSonsofGod.B.R.
    Ambedkar,borninHinduDalitcommunity,wasaheavycriticofthecastesystem.HepioneeredtheDalitBuddhistmovementinIndia,
    andaskedhisfollowerstoleaveHinduism,andconverttoBuddhism.India'sfirstPrimeMinister,JawaharlalNehru,basedonhisown
    relationshipwithDalitreformerAmbedkar,alsospreadinformationaboutthedireneedtoeradicateuntouchabilityforthebenefitofthe
    Dalitcommunity.AnotherexamplewastheTempleEntryProclamationissuedbythelastMaharajaofTravancoreintheIndianstateof
    Keralaintheyear1936.TheMaharajaproclaimedthatoutcastesshouldnotbedeniedtheconsolationsandthesolaceoftheHindu
    faithEventoday,theSriPadmanabhaswamytemplethatfirstwelcomedDalitsinthestateofKeralaisreveredbytheDalitHindu
    community.
