Answer all questions
(Use of necessary tables & charts permitted)

1. Two large plain surfaces are 20 mm apart and the gap contains oil of dynamic viscosity
0.6 kg/(m.s).

A thin plate of 0.5 m2 is to be pulled through the gap at a constant

velocity of 0.6 m/s.

It is 8 mm from one of the surfaces.

Neglecting edge effects,

calculate the force required to pull the plate.

2. An inverted U-tube manometer with an inclination of 30 with vertical using a

manometric liquid of specific gravity 0.93 is used to measure velocity of water using a
pitot tube. If the distance between the separating surfaces of the two limbs is 7.5 cm
find the velocity. Assume that the coefficient of the pitot tube is 0.97.

3. A gate hinged at one end closes an opening in the wall of

a hydroelectric reservoir as shown in the figure. Find
the normal force F that should be applied at the bottom
of the plate to prevent the gate from opening.

4. A general equation for a steady, two dimensional velocity field that is linear in both
spatial directions x and y is
Where U,V and the coefficients are constants.

Their dimensions are assumed to be

appropriately defined. Calculate the x and y components of the acceleration field.

5. A cylindrical tank of water rotates solid body rotation

counterclockwise about its vertical axis at angular
speed of 260 rpm.

Calculate the vorticity of fluid

particles in the tank.

6. Water enters a tank of diameter DT steadily at a mass flow

& w . An orifice at the bottom with diameter Do allows

rate of m
water to escape. The orifice has a rounded entrance, so the
frictional losses are negligible. If the tank is initially empty,
(a) determine the maximum height that the water will reach
in the tank and (b) obtain a relation for water height z as a
function of time.

When freewheeling, the angular velocity of a windmill is found to be a function of

the windmill diameter D, the wind velocity V, the air density , the windmill height H as
compared to the atmospheric boundary layer height L, and the number of blades N.

= f D, V , ,

,N
L

Viscosity effects are negligible. Find appropriate pi groups for this problem and rewrite
the function in terms of dimensionless terms.

The system in the figure consists of 1200

m of 5 cm cast iron pipe, two 45 and four
90 flanged long radius elbows, a fully open
flanged globe valve and a sharp exit into a
reservoir. If the elevation at point 1 is 400
m, and the elevation of the water surface of
the reservoir is 500 m, what gage pressure is
required at point 1 to deliver 0.005 m3/s of
water at 20
