A lesson plan for Grammar Teaching The present perfect

tense and the simple past tense

Teaching Object: Junior Middle School students of Grade 8, who have an


average
level in learning English

Lesson Type: Grammar Teaching


Teaching Method: Task-based approach
Topic: The present perfect tense and the simple past tense
Time: 40mins
Known Knowledge: The basic knowledge of the simple past tense and the
present
perfect tense (e.g. the definition, the form, and the
situation
to use it, etc.)

Teaching Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:
1. Language Knowledge:
A. consolidate their knowledge of the present perfect tense and the
simple past tense.
B. understand the difference (the definition, the use, etc.) between the
present perfect tense and the simple past tense.
2. Language Skills:
A. use these two tense in different situation or sentences through
understanding the meaning of the actions in the sentence context or
by distinguishing the time adverbial.

B. use these two tense correctly to talk about things that happened in
the past.
3. Learning Strategies:
A. master the different use of these two tense by using inductive
method.
B. naturally distinguish and use these two tense in daily communication.
4. Affect:
A. cultivate an interest and enhance motivation in learning grammar by
mastering some methods (e.g. by comparing ) to learn grammar.

Teaching Focus:

1. The review of the form and the use of the present perfect tense and the
simple past tense.
2. The different use between these two tense.
3. The exercise for consolidation.

Difficult Points:

1. Distinguishing and using the present perfect tense and the simple past
tense by finding out the time adverbial and by understanding the
sentence meaning.

Teaching Procedures: (40mins)


Step 1 Warming-up (7mins)
A. Warm-up by simply reviewing the present perfect tense and the
simple past tense to arouse Sss memory of the knowledge of these
two tense. (2mins)
B. Give some key words to ask Ss to use simple past tense and present
perfect tense to ask and answer in pairs after discussion. (5mins)
E.g.
Holiday, homework, study, last Sunday, finish, stay at
home, visit, play, friends, watch TV, etc.

S1: What did you do on your holiday?


S2: I stayed at home and did my homework.

S1: Have you finished your homework?


S2: Yes, of course, I have finished all of them.
Step 2 Presentation (17mins)
A. Ask Ss to summarize the different features between the present
perfect tense and the simple past tense after the simple practice in
warming-up. (3mins)
B. Show Ss some pictures with the time-axis and examples to illustrate
the relationship between the present perfect tense and the simple
past tense, meanwhile ask the Ss to make sentences according to
the pictures. (8mins)
C. Return to the examples in the textbook, and explain to Ss or ask Ss
why these sentences should use simple past tense or present perfect
tense (3mins)
D. Show Ss two sentences which have the common time adverbial but
different tense---one present perfect tense and another simple past
tense, and then ask Ss to interpret the different meaning of these
two sentences. Afterward, the teacher give a summary to the Ss.
(3mins)
E.g. It has been rainy this afternoon.
It was rainy this afternoon.
Step 3 Practice (5mins)
A. Ask Ss to finish the exercise (complete the conversation with correct
tense) in the textbook (page55) in limiting time. (3mins)
B. Have a discussion with their partner to compare their answers with
each other. (2min)
Step 4 Production (7mins)
A. Ask 1-2 pairs to finish the conversation by reading out their answers
and give their reasons why they use this tense.(e.g. by finding out
the key time adverbial, etc.), meanwhile, teacher gives comment to
Ss and correct their wrong answers. (3mins)
B. Show Ss some relative pictures on the courseware, then form groups
to have a discussion and use their imagination to link these pictures
together to make a story or a dialogue using present perfect tense
and simple past tense, then 1-2 groups will be asked to show their
groupwork. (4mins)
Step 5 Summary (3mins)
A.Show the time-axis again to consolidate Ss understanding of the
difference

between the present perfect tense and the simple past tense. (2mins)
B. Show Ss the methods learned in this class to distinguish the present
perfect
tense and the simple past tense. (e.g. by finding out the time
adverbial, check
the correctness by understanding the meaning of the sentences, etc.)

Step 6 Assignments (1min)
A. Review the content learned in this class.
B. Consolidate the two tense learned in this class by finishing the
exercise in the Ss exercise book.
C. Write a diary or a competition using the present perfect tense and
the simple past tenses.

Reserve activities (when there is still some time left)

Listen to an English song---Yesterday once more, and ask the Ss to


get the sentences using the simple past tense and the present perfect
tense. Then show Ss the song lyric, afterward sing the song together.
