What is a data centre ?

A data center is a facility used to house computer systems and associated components, such
as servers and storage systems. It generally includes redundant or backup power supplies,
redundant data communications connections, environmental controls (e.g., air conditioning, fire
suppression) and various security devices. Large data centers are industrial scale operations using
as much electricity as a small town

Fact : One of the main concerns is business continuity; companies rely on their information
systems to run their operations. If a system becomes unavailable, company operations may be
impaired or stopped completely. It is necessary to provide a reliable infrastructure for IT
operations, in order to minimize any chance of disruption. Information security is also a concern,
and for this reason a data center has to offer a secure environment which minimizes the chances
of a security breach. A data center must therefore keep high standards for assuring the integrity
and functionality of its hosted computer environment. This is accomplished through redundancy
of mechanical cooling and power systems
What is a raised floor ?

A raised floor (also raised flooring, access floor(ing), or raised access computer floor) provides
an elevated structural floor above a solid substrate (often a concrete slab) to create a hidden void
for the passage of mechanical and electrical services. Raised floors are widely used in
modern office buildings, and in specialized areas such ascommand centers, IT data centers and
computer rooms, where there is a requirement to route mechanical services and cables, wiring,
and electrical supply. Such flooring can be installed at varying heights from 2 inches (51 mm) to
heights above 4 feet (1,200 mm) to suit services that may be accommodated beneath. Additional
structural support and lighting are often provided when a floor is raised enough for a person to
crawl or even walk beneath.
What is a Server racks?
Server racks form the backbone of the data center infrastructure.
What is a PDU?
A power distribution unit is a device for controlling electrical power in a data center. Floor and
rack-mounted PDUs can provide data for power usage effectiveness (PUE) calculations.

Each PDU can handle larger amounts of energy than an ordinary power strip (300 kilovolt-amps
and higher depending on the manufacturer and model) and typically provides power to multiple
equipment racks.

What is 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U, 5U, 6U ?

The 1U, 2U, 3U, 4U, 5U, 6U and 7U are all different sized rackmount servers; the U following
the number is short for unit. The number indicates the size of the rackmount, 1U being the
smallest rackmount and 7U being the biggest rackmount. A rack unit, U or RU as a unit of
measure describes the height of electronic equipment designed to mount in a 19-inch rack or
a 23-inch rack. The 19 inches (482.60 mm) or 23 inches (584.20 mm) dimension reflects the
width of the equipment mounting-frame in the rack including the frame; the width of the
equipment that can be mounted inside the rack is less. One rack unit is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm)
high
