Doors Open Ottawa, June 6 & 7 Explore Ottawas culture, history and architecture

for free. The 14th annual architectural event celebrates our communitys built heritage on
the first full weekend in June. Buildings from Carp to Cumberland will open their doors
for free for the publics viewing pleasure. For more information see www.ottawa.ca.
Give Away Weekend, June 6-7, was started in Kanata and now takes place across the
City. If you have items you no longer want and are willing to give away, place them at
the curb with a FREE sign. Everything from left over construction scraps, to furniture, to
books and household items may be just what someone else wants. Keep these out of
the landfill and let someone re-use them.
Distraction Thefts Thieves are targeting elderly women, following them into a store,
observing their PIN during a purchase, and distracting them at their car while an
accomplice grabs their purse. Within minutes, the victims bank account is emptied. Any
information about distraction thefts should be provided to Ottawa Police at 613-2361222.
Cycling in Kanata North Bicycles are vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act, so it is
important that you and your children know the rules. For example, front and back lights
and a bell are mandatory for everyone, as are helmets for those under 18. Riding on a
sidewalk is also not permitted, although this is not enforced for small children. A
sidewalk may be concrete, asphalt or stone dust, so the asphalt paths along roads in
Kanata are sidewalks. The paths through parks are dual purpose (cycling and
pedestrians), but the right of way must always be given to pedestrians.
Cyclists need to watch out for pedestrians and car drivers watch out for cyclists. Be
particularly careful when children are going to or from school, and follow the rules of the
road check them at http://tinyurl.com/lnfqxur and keep everyone safe.
Be a Responsible Dog Owner When you take your dogs out to do their business,
make sure that you pick up after them and take it home for disposal. Dogs should be
kept on a leash at all times unless they are in an off-leash zone. A list of on- and offleash parks in Kanata North can be found at http://tinyurl.com/nz93vbf. You must
always be in control of your dog, and remember that off-leash dogs are not permitted
near playgrounds or occupied playing fields.
