HOW TO INSTALL UBUNTU 14.04 DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS 7

Today, technology of operating systems are grow faster. Just like Microsoft with
their windows OS. Everybody know what is windows operating system, from windows
XP until the latest series named Windows X because of their performance and
popularity around the world. Another popular operating system based on open-source
Linux software, Ubuntu has a lot of user too. Statistic from Wikipedia show that user of
Ubuntu reach 2 million users. Then, what is Ubuntu? Ubuntu is an operating system that
developed by Canonical Software based on open-source Linux software. Ubuntu
becomes one of the most popular OS because of the stability and user friendly interface
and also there are a lot of advantages using Ubuntu. First, its free because developed
from open-source software. Second its easy to update the software package with single
syntax from terminal. Yes, big difference between linux and Windows is, when you are
using linux, almost all of your activity you do via terminal (text command), but in
windows, almost all activity, you do via mouse-clicking (user interface). Third
advantage is Ubuntu support a lot of hardware compatibility, Ubuntu only need minimal
512MB of RAM and 8GB of Storage. Forth is Ubuntu allow you to customize the look of
your Ubuntu environment. Its very cool because there are a lot customization tools
provided and its all free. And actually there are still more advantages using linux but
we will continue to talk about Dual Boot OS. Dual Boot mean the method to install
two different bootable OS in one PC/laptop. In this case, we can easily use Ubuntu 14.04
and windows 7 in one PC. Dual boot let us to experience different OS environment. So
we can learn not only using one kind of OS but also try new OS.
To install Ubuntu dual boot with windows 7, first you need your laptop/PC that
has windows 7 installed already, Ubuntu 14.04 ISO file, USB flashdisk or DVD-R to make
Ubuntu installer, but I recommend using USB flashdisk for easy use, next you need
Universal USB installer software to burn the ISO file into USB flashdisk, then you need
easeus partition master to make empty partition from your hardisk. When installing
Ubuntu, you dont need to connect to the internet because you can install it offline.
Before installation, I recommend you to back up your important data to avoid
unwanted conditions. The installations steps divided by three main steps. First main
step is to make unallocated space in your hardisk. This partition will be the destination
place for Ubuntu installation file. First, Install easeus partition master and open the
program after complete installation. You will see the number of partitions in your
hardisk.

To make new partition, click one of the exist partition, for example partition D: DATA,
and click resize/move partition. After that resize new partition size as you want minimal
8 GB of storage. In this tutorial I use 8589 MB storage.

After that click OK, and apply. Wait until the process is done.

After process is done, new unallocated space will appear. Its marked with red mark. And
now we will continue to second main step.
Second main step is make bootable USB installer using your USB disk and
Universal USB Installer software. You can download the setup file on the internet and
install it until done. After installation completed, open the program and click agree. The
UI is like the picture below.

Step 1 is choosing the type of operating system. For this option, choose Ubuntu.
Next, step 2 is choosing the ISO installer file of Ubuntu 14.04 that stored in the
computer. Search and click the ISO file. After that step 3 is choosing the USB flash disk
that used to be the installer device. Connect your USB drive and choose it. After the
third step completed, the USB installer is ready to create.

Click create and wait until the process is done. After USB installer created, we can
continue to the third main step.
Third step is installing the OS. First, plug in your installer USB drive. After that
restart and go to your boot manager when startup to boot from USB drive.

Choose your USB drive and press enter. After that, wait until welcome screen appear.
After welcome appear, there are two options for using the installer. You can try Ubuntu
or install Ubuntu. In this process, choose install Ubuntu.

After choosing install Ubuntu, you will see next installation screen which show you
information about best recommendations for installing, and also additional options to
install updates and third party software when installing. You can check or uncheck this
additional options.

Next, click forward and you will see another option. Next option is installation type.
There are three option provided. First is Install Ubuntu alongside windows 7. This
mean Ubuntu will be installed in the same partition with your windows 7 partition, not
in the new partition that we have created early, second is Replace windows 7 with
Ubuntu. This mean our windows 7 OS will be deleted and replaced with Ubuntu. Please
be careful when choosing this option because we cannot restore our windows 7 OS.

Third is something else. We will choose this option and adjust where to install the OS
data. After choose Something else, click continue.

Next step is make a partition for Ubuntu system. In the next installation screen, you can
see all of your hardisk partition and look for free space partition that we have created
early with Easeus. When you find it, click it and then click plus (+) button.

Then, a new option window will appear and now we will make a root partition. For size,
its enough to give 7590 MB of storage. For Use as, choose ext4 journaling file
system. And mount point, choose /. / mean that this partition will be allocated
for root storage. And then click OK.

Next we will make a partition for swap area. Swap are is an additional memory to
support your RAM. To do this, click the rest of free space partition, and click plus (+)
button.

Then, a new option window will appear and now we will make swap partition. For size,
just give the rest of free space. For Use as, choose swap area. And then click OK.

After all the partitions created, click install now. Next step is adjust the time setting
with typing your location, for example : Jakarta.

Next step is choosing keyboard layout. Simply choose English and click continue.

After you click continue, you will be directed to information form. Fill all the textbox
with your data or whatever you want, and the click continue.

After you click continue, wait for the installation process to be completed until the pop up
screen appear to inform you that the installation process has finished. And to complete
installation steps, click restart now.

After restart is complete, you will be directed to new boot loader of Ubuntu. This
session let you choose whether you want to use Windows 7 or Ubuntu. After choosing
one of them, press enter.

Finally, our Ubuntu 14.04 has been installed. The indicator of success or not is you
can see Ubuntu boot loader called GNU GRUB in picture 18. When you install Ubuntu,
please do it carefully by understanding all of the process. If you did not see the GRUB,
and still with windows boot loader, maybe you need to reinstall Ubuntu and install it
again. When you have succeeded installing it, here are a lot of thing to do. For example
is getting connected and update your system, so, your OS getting more stable and you
can enjoy and explore Ubuntu. With Ubuntu, you can install any programs and most of
them are free. The first look of Ubuntu is shown in picture 19.
