At a Glance Dibru Saikhowa National Park is one of the 19 (nineteen) biodiversity hotspots

in the world. It mainly consists of semi wet evergreen forests, tropical moist deciduous forest,
bamboo, cane brakes and grasslands. Situated in the flood plains of Brahmaputra, at an
altitude of 118 m above sea level, Dibru-Saikhowa is a safe haven for many extremely rare
and endangered species of wildlife, including over 300 species of avifauna both endangered
and migratory, as well as various species of shrubs, herbs and rare medicinal plants.
Though the park was primarily meant for the conservation of White winged wood duck in its
natural habitat, it is also the famous for its bright colored wild horses known as Feral Horses.
Some rare and endangered animals of this sanctuary are Hoolock gibbon, capped langur, slow
loris, water buffalo, tiger, elephant, gangetic river dolphin etc. Bird life consists of Spot billed
pelican, White bellied heron, Pallah's fishing eagle, Pale capped pigeon, Swamp francolin etc.
and migratory birds like Geyleg goose, Brahmini duck, Bar-headed goose, pelican, Black
stork etc.
Climate & Rainfall The climate is tropical. Summers are hot and wet where as winters are
cold and dry. The annual rainfall ranges between 2300 mm. and 3800 mm. June to September
is the main rainy season. The annual temperature ranges from a minimum of 7C and to a
maximum of 34C.
Flora The forest kind of Dibru-Saikhowa consists of semi-evergreen forests, deciduous,
littoral and swamp forests and patches of wet evergreen forests. The National Park is having
about 35.84% moist mixed forests, 9.50% degraded forest and 21.25% grassland. Major tree
species of the area are tetrasperma, Dillenia indica, Bischofi a javanica, Bombax ceiba,
Lagerstroemia parviflora, Terminalia myriocarpa, Mesua ferrea, Dalbergia sissoo, Ficus are
some of the species of the orchid flora of Dibru-Saikhowa, Arundo donax, Imperata
cylindrica, Phragmaties karka, Erianthus ravanea are principal types of grasses in the
National Park.
Fauna Mammals
Total 36 species of mammals have so far been recorded from the Dibru-Saikhowa, of which
12 are listed in the schedule 1 of Wild life (Protection) Act 1972. The mammalian species of
Dibru-Saikhowa includes Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Jungle Cat, Sloth
Bear, Dhole, Small Indian Civet, Malayan Giant Squirrel, Chinese Pangolin, Gangetic
Dolphin, Slow Loris, Pig Tailed Macaque, Assamese Macaque, Rhesus Macaque, Capped
Langur, Hollock Gibbon, Asian Elephant, Wild Boar, Sambar, and Hog Deer, barking Deer,
Asiatic Water Buffalo, and Feral Horses etc.
Reptiles
Dibru-Saikhowa is uniformly rich and diver in herpetofauna. 2 species of Monitor Lizards, 8
species of Turtles and 8 species of Snakes have so far been recorded from the DibruSaikhowa.
Birds
The avi fauna of Dibru-Saikhowa includes Greater Adjutant Stork, Lesser Adjutant Stork,
Great Grebe, Indian Shag,Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Night Heron,Yellow Bittern,Openbill
Stork, Black Stork, Large Whisstling Teal, Greylag Groose,Common Pintail, Pallas's Fishing
Eagle, Griffon Vulture, Osprey, Crested Serpent Eagle,Spot Billed Pelican, White Winged
Duck, Bear's Poachard, Greater Spotted Eagle, Bengal Florican, Pale Capped Pigon, Great
Pied Hornbill, March Babbler, Jardon's Babbler, Black Breasted Parrotbill etc.

How to Reach The Park can be visited by staying at Tinsukia town from where you can catch
buses directly to the national park in Dibru Saikhova.
By Air
Mohanbari (Dibrugarh) is the nearest Airport, which is about 40 kms. away from Tinsukia
town.
By Rail
One of the easiest ways to reach Tinsukia town is travelling by trains. You can opt for
Rajdhani trains from Delhi city which pass through the route to Dibrugarh.
By Road
Buses can be taken to the town of Tinsukia which is well connected with Dibrugarh town by
NH. 37 and the distance is 55 kms. The distance between the city of Guwahati and Dibru
Saikhova National Park will be around 500 kilometers approximately. Travel through the
buses can get quite uncomfortable due to improper maintenance and crowd.
Travel Tips Permission is required for entry into the park. Guijan Ghat (10km from Tinsukia)
and Saikhowa ghat are the two entry points for tourists. Entry before sunrise and after sunset
as well as night halt and picnicking inside the Park is not allowed. There are two forest
villages Dhadia and Laika inside the park.
Best Time to Visit November to April is the best season to visit Dibru Saikhowa National
Park, during this period you can enjoy watching migratory birds which are the main attraction
of the park.
