The traditional clothing known as Lupita is still worn today.

Congolese clothing is centred on the wearing of colorful


materials, and is worn by both women and men and can always
be found at the local market in DR of the Congo. Liputa are
sometimes also designed for different purposes, and aimed at

certain audiences, for example paying tribute to a leader,


marking a special occasion or at a sporting event.

Sports played include basketball (which is growing in


popularity), soccer (one of the few organized sports in DRC),
track and field, volleyball, and boxing. Popular entertainment
events include beauty pageants and sports competitions.
Theatrical arts have become vibrant throughout the Congo,
especially in Kinshasa.

The official language of the Dominican Republic of the Congo is


French, but there are many other spoken languages, including
Kikongo, Lingala, Swahili, and Tshiluba. French sign language is
mostly taught in this country compared to American Sign
Language.

Celebrated Holidays in DRC include:


Commemoration of the Martyrs of Independence, which is held every January 4 th. The
Commemoration of the Martyrs of Independence is held as a double event to
remember the victims of violence against human rights and also the martyrs of
justice.
National Heroes Day, held January 1th, and it commemorates the death of Patrice
Lumumba, the Congos popular leader.
National Liberation Day, held May 17th. It pays tribute to the efforts of the Movement
for the Liberation of the Congo rebel group who fought the government during the
second war
Independence day is held every June 30th
Parents Day is held August 1st, and they consider it a public holiday where families
and locals are enthusiastic about celebrating family and their parents.
Christmas is treated as a religious festival. It is less commercialized, so presents are
uncommon. On Christmas Eve, churches stage musicals with at least five to six choir
performances and nativity plays. Some communities enjoy festivities until dawn when
Christmas Day services start at 9:00 a.m. Families typically prepare a feast at home,
and for those who can afford it, pork and chicken are staples.

Christianity is the majority religion in the Democratic Republic of the


Congo, followed by about 80% of the people. Denominations include
Roman Catholic with 50%, Protestant 20% and Kimbanguist 10%.

Though many ethnic groups in the Congo practice matrilineal


succession, in which inheritance is passed through the mother's side of
the family, women are regarded as lower than males on the scale of
social hierarchy. Women, even if they hold a high economic status, are
seen as prostitutes if they do not marry.
