STEP I: WARM-UP; Time 2 minutes


Subsidiary aims: To create a good atmosphere
To create willingness to participate in the new lesson
The teacher asks informal questions about the date, the missing students.
Q: What date is today?
Whos on duty?
Whos absent?
The students answer the teachers questions.

STEP II: HOMEWORK CHECK-UP; Time 5 minutes


Subsidiary aims: To make students check their homework
To make students become aware of their own mistakes
The teacher asks the students to read aloud their homework. The teacher checks the
students homework from a qualitative and quantitative point of view.
Qualitative: What did you prepare for today?
Was your homework difficult?
Quantitative: Did all of you write your homework?
Who wants to read?
The students were supposed to write about the important events and people belonging to
the Victorian Age. The teacher checks their pronunciation and intonation.

STEP III: LEAD-IN; Time 5 minutes


Subsidiary aims: To introduce the students into the topic of the new lesson
To develop the students skill of listening for general understanding
To develop the students skill of taking notes
To develop the students skill of expressing their opinion

The teacher asks the students to open their textbook at page 162. The teacher plays the
cassette and asks the students to answer the two questions at exercise I, page 162.

STEP IV: SPEAKING TASK: Time 7 minutes


Subsidiary aims: To develop the students skill of watching for general understanding
To develop the students skill of expressing their opinion
The teacher plays a video and the students have to pay attention. She asks them to answer
the questions:
What happens in this scene?
How are the characters dressed?
When do you think the action takes place?
Is marriage important nowadays as it used to be in the past?
Do people have the same values as in the past?
Is marriage a good way to have a safe life?
The students answer the questions. The teacher corrects their pronunciation if necessary.

STEP V: READING TASK; Time 7 minutes


Subsidiary aims: To develop the students skill of listening
To listen for detailed information
The teacher reads the text as a model for the students. They listen. She teaches the new
words:
Ardently = showing strong feelings of love
To colour = when someone colours, their face becomes redder because they are
embarrassed
Eloquent = able to express your ideas and opinions well, especially in a way that
influences people
To vary = to change

Countenance = your face or your expression


To inquire = to ask for information
Design = intention
The teacher reads the second text as a model and then she teaches the new words:
Frigid = not friendly or kind
Inclined to = willing to

STEP VI: READING-SPEAKING; Time 10 minutes


Subsidiary aims: To develop the students skill of reading for specific information
To develop the students ability of expressing their opinion
The teacher asks the students to read the text at page 162 aloud and then answer the side
questions, in pairs, for excerpt 1 and reach a conclusion as to how excerpt 1 answers the
general question:
Can pride and love go together? (exercise II.c, page 162)
Then the students are asked to do the same for excerpt 2.

STEP VII: ASSESSMENT ACTIVITY; Time 10 minutes


Subsidiary aim: To develop the students skill of reading in order to reinforce the
understanding of the text
Each student receives an activity file in which they have to find the correct answer. The
students perform the task and the teacher takes oral feedback.

STEP VIII: ISSUING HOMEWORK; Time 2 minutes


Subsidiary aim: To improve the students skill of writing

The teacher asks the students to write as homework an essay about: Have the values of
marriage changed since the Victorian Age? Give arguments and examples to support
your opinion. (250-300 words)

STEP IX: ENDING OF THE LESSON; Time 3 minutes


Subsidiary aim: To create a good atmosphere at the end of the lesson
The teacher plays a video with the song Im in love with you Leona Lewis. The students
listen.
