RECOMMENDED READING

Ok, its getting a bit embarrassing now. It would seem that pretty much every one of our contributors is a successful
published author. Regular readers will remember that our food writer, Stephen Bywater published The Devils Ark last
year and he has followed it up with his second novel, Night of the Damned. Stephens first novel was described by the
New York Times best-selling author Christopher Golden as Creepy, classy horror, full of dread and echoing with the
sorrows of war and the follow up is already attracting pre-orders. Stephen will be signing copies in Waterstones on
Saturday, 4th July.
In Night of the Damned, the action takes place deep in the Amazon jungle. The setting is loosely based on Henry
Fords Fordlandia - a vast rubber plantation founded in the heart of the Brazilian rainforest. It is a tale about immorality
and obsession, where very little is as it seems and in the darkness figures haunt the settlement and the surrounding forest.
With the story partly inspired by Fords own forgotten city in Brazil it interweaves fact and fiction and leaves the reader
with an unsettling vision of a hell on earth.

BREEZE BIKES
FREEWHEEL INTO
TO BEDFORD

Breeze is the biggest nationwide programme ever to get more women into riding
bikes for fun. Breeze champions are a network of over a thousand passionate
and enthusiastic female volunteers who help deliver the programme, organising
hundreds of fun, free, local bike rides throughout the country, every week.
Rides go at a speed that suits everyone, and they often start or finish at a cafe so
everyone can have a drink and a chat. Breeze currently have almost 200 bike rides for
women on a weekly basis.
I recently qualified to become a Breeze Champion for Bedford so will be organising
rides in the local area throughout the year, said Larissa Clarke. My rides are aimed
at ladies who may not have been on a bike for years or who would just like to build
their confidence up before venturing out on their own. So beginners and novices are
very welcome. These free social rides will be at a gentle pace using local cycle tracks
away from the busy roads. The rides will all include a tea break to enjoy some of the
delightful cafes in the Bedfordshire area and of course a chance for a chat.
Forthcoming dates: Tuesday 2nd June Ladies Danish Camp Social Ride ~
meeting 1pm at Priory Country Park for a 6 mile cycle. Saturday 6th June Russell
Park Roamer ~ meeting 3pm at The Kiosk for a 4/5mile cycle. Sunday 14th June to
celebrate National Bike Week - Bedford Park Rookie Ride ~ meeting at The Pavilion at
10am. This is a chance for beginners to try a ride in safe off road surroundings, cycling
around the park as a group.
If you fancy joining a Breeze ride, call Larissa on 07800 899858 for further details
or visit www.goskyride.com and search for Bedford ladies-only rides. Places are
limited so you will need to book in advance. Keep an eye on my Facebook page

ROLL UP, ROLL UP!

ITS BEDFORDS BIG
HIGH STREET SHOWCASE

SHOWCASE YOUR
HIGH STREET

So, I know weve covered this before. Support your town. But a couple of years have
passed, the Clanger is back and better than ever and I think we need to review. June
always brings the High Street Showcase. A great day out right in the middle of town.
And now independent shops along with international chains are present as never before.
Coffee?? Costa to Coffee With Art. Caf Virtuoso (veg/vegan) to Poppins. Goldings is
up for sale. What will it be?? Have you been down the Arcade lately? The development
going on by the river will bring more choice and reasons to stay in town. Bedford is
showcasing so much of what it has to offer. We have a turkish restaurant on the high
street Nazar. Mimos has opened on St Cuthberts (just down from the Blue Glass and
Temples). Animal Gallery in Castle Quay brings you art and small events combining
music, fashion, and town life. Lost and Found is the tiniest London-esque cocktail
bar around. But there is more in July and August and so go out in your town and
celebrate. Anytime. (High Street Showcase is June 13, all day. Cicero Buck cd release
party is 8pm at the EntShed, Castle Rd). By Kristine Wilkinson-Hughes

MONDAY NIGHT IS QUIZ NIGHT AT

For the third year running, Bedford town centre will be taken
over to celebrate everything about Bedford High Street.
On Saturday 13th June, expect to see local businesses,
community groups and entertainers all coming together on
Bedford High Street and Mill Street to showcase their talents in
the heart of Bedford. The High Street will be closed to traffic on
the day to create a massive street party showcase.
New for 2015 will be the opportunity to practice your golf
swing on the inflatable golf shot or your putting skills on the
green. Children can have a go at gymnastics on the inflatable
airtrack, there will be egg & spoon races on the sports day track
and theres even a climbing wall.
Alongside the activities, the event is the perfect opportunity
to show off the fantastic wealth of independent retailers in
Bedford, particularly in, and around, the High Street area. Over 35
businesses will be trading outside on the day, demonstrating their
products and services, with many at special event prices alongside
the Handmade in Bedfordshire Craft Market. Further attractions
include childrens entertainment; face painting, craft activities and
funfair rides; the Owls from The Raptor Foundation plus the live
music and dance stage featuring everything from choirs, bands and
soloists to street dancing, swing and ballet.
Mayor Dave Hodgson said, We want as many people as
possible to come and enjoy the fun this year, too, with an array of
activities, stalls, entertainment and more on offer. Were looking
forward to a great atmosphere once again, as people take the
opportunity to enjoy and support their town centre at this genuine
community event.
Pick up a programme from Council outlets, local retailers, the
Travel & Tourism Centre, Bedford Library, The Higgins Bedford
and Caf Number 13.

THE EDUCATION
OF A LAP DANCER

Saturday 6th June 7.30 pm. Tickets: 10 Concessions: 8.50

Age Guidance: 15+
Living in the fashionable London suburb of Little Venice, Chris Moore is
a teacher at a socially challenged inner-city school, and his wife, Marie,
is a doctor at a busy London NHS hospital. They seem to be doing fine,
but when Chris gets involved with a Romanian lap-dancer, things get
dangerously complicated. John Coopers play examines the growing ethnic
diversity of contemporary London and looks at values and morals in a
rapidly changing urban culture.
Under the spotlight is the pressure on those at the frontline of public
sector health and education, trying to cope with ever-increasing numbers.
The play also deals with the erotic and sensual undertow in multi-cultural
London, where, sex, as ever, is a powerful and irresistible driving force.
So when Chriss daughter drops out of college, and brings home Billy, a
street-wise, black musician, tensions between father and daughter escalate.

Nationally recognised childrens theatre specialists Full House Theatre has received 25,900

Full House Creative Director Ben Miles, says, We are thrilled to have received the
support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. The First World War is a sensitive subject so our show
has been made for children, based on the ideas of children.

MERRILY WE
ROLL ALONG
Monday 8th June to Saturday 13th June
7.30pm. Tickets: 11
Stephen Sondheims musical Merrily We Roll Along
begins in the 1970s and moves backwards to the
late 50s. The story traces the lives of wealthy, jaded
composer Franklin Shepard and his two estranged
friends, through each milestone of their personal and
professional lives good and bad.
Frank has an unconventional songwriting style in an
uncompromising business a bit like Sondheim himself
and he spends his career balancing an insatiable
desire for success with appreciating the relationships
and people who have made it all possible.
Warm and poignant, clever and witty, Merrily We
Roll Along is a compelling Broadway fable about
friendship, compromise and the high price of success.

ALI CAMPBELL INTERVIEW

UB40 have enjoyed a career spanning four decades
with their reggae/political/pop sound including
the hits Red Red Wine, One in Ten, Ive Got You
Babe, Rat in mi Kitchen and Kingston Town. This
summer theyll be playing in our very own Bedford
Park in August, supported by the Brand New
Heavies. The Clangers Lloyd Friend of the Stars
Lugsden got to talk to singer Ali Campbell

BC: What was Chrissie Hynde like to work with?

AC: Ah, Auntie Chrissie - shes a bit older than us! We
supported The Pretenders in the early days and that
was our big break. Auntie Chrissie - we do rib her and
her bad dancing - she gets it off Jim Kerr, you know
that dance? and she loves her animals
BC: Are you a download, CD or Vinyl type?
AC: Jack, my son downloads some stuff for me for
the iPod - some new reggae, stuff like The Prodigy
and I listen to them when travelling but I favour CDs
generally, Ive got a big ghetto blaster I whack em on !

Bedford Clanger: Ali, Been to Bedford before?

Ali Campbel: Probably must have done, played all
over the UK, including all of the little places
BC: Bedford Boys Club?
AC: Ha, yeah, probably! Weve just played and sold
out nine UK dates, so were chuffed with that. We
finished at Brixton Academy - weve come full circle
with that venue!

BC: Rum or Red Stripe?

AC: I dont drink Red Stripe anymore, used to, not for
14 years nowI was hypnotised off of it. There was
a health farm in Melton Mowbury, you know, where
the pork pies are from, and I had aversion therapy,
10 - 1, 10 being something lovely about it, down to
1, something awful, like frogs in your pint. I do have
Guinness now though. Did you know in Jamaica they
put the beer on a rock to drink it hot? It stops you
sweating.

BC: How did you first get into reggae?

AC: I grew up in Balsall Heath,South Birmingham and
all of my friends were West Indian or Indian. So naturally
I listened to a lot of reggae, Indian & Arabic music. We
spent a lot of time in cafes, playing pinball where the
music would be playing. I used to go and watch Indian
films at the cinema too, such as Mother India.

BC:Whats your ringtone?

AC: Oh, its just one of the phone settings, a quiet
unobtrusive one, I did have one of frogs and crickets
chirruping but it was too quiet

BC: Best song, reggae or other?

AC: Thats impossible! I like so much music,
obviously reggaes up there but like any other kid, I
grew up listening to The Beatles plus Stevie Wonder
and Motown, plus the Wailers. I think my favourite
reggae album - the quintessential - is Bob Marleys
African Herbsman from 1970.

BC:Thanks Ali!
AC: Love to all at The Clanger!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: JOHN PIPER

Saturday 13th June Sunday 12th July 2015

Piper was one of the most important and diverse artists of the 20th century, famous
for his paintings of churches, stately homes and romantic landscapes. John Piper
is the first in a new series of mini-exhibitions at The Higgins Bedford which cast a
spotlight on artists in the Cecil Higgins Collection.
The gallery is lucky enough to have five fantastic pictures by Piper covering
a period of forty years of his extraordinary career. Two of these works are new
additions, kindly gifted to the gallery within in the last year. What makes these two
prints stand out is the stunning depictions of buildings in Bedfordshire. Piper had a
lifelong interest in architecture and it is fascinating to see his unique take on two of
Bedfordshires most historic buildings.
This will be the first time these works have been on display, and the first time all of
the gallerys Pipers have been on display.

In this series of talks we look at pottery found from archaeological sites around
Bedfordshire starting in the Neolithic period up to the modern day. Ever since our
early ancestors discovered how to fire clay, pottery has become an important part of
peoples lives. This coming third session on Wed 10th June will be looking at the
pottery of the Dark Ages to the Medieval period (410-1300 AD). Join us in finding
out how a few old broken potsherds help us to understand what life after the Romans
was really like!

SEVEN MODERN ARTISTS WE SHOULD

KNOW BETTER

James Russell - Friends lecture. Tuesday 9th June 2015 at 7.30pm

Cost: 8 (Friends 3)
James Russell offers a tantalising alternative vision of 20th century British art,
discussing a small group of artists who all enjoyed success in their lifetime but are
not necessarily appreciated today by the critics: Eric Ravilious is probably the most
familiar of the group, alongside Norfolk landscape painter Edward Seago, Winifred
Nicholson, Algernon Newton, New Zealand-born painter Frances Hodgkins, flawed
genius Christopher Wood, and Richard Eurich.

Who says you have to travel far afield to have a holiday? It may be just up the A6 in Haynes, but The Old
Piggery could be in rural Wales with its fabulous views, location on a working arable farm and its proximity to the
beautiful Bedfordshire countryside. And this summer, owners Rob and Rachel Smith have added something extra
special: two yurts that guests can stay in. The Moroccan yurts are self-contained and are a great weatherproof
alternative to traditional camping. They are self-catering, but if youre tempted by the smell of the full English
coming from the main B&B, youre welcome to have breakfast there! So, if you want to get away from it all,
enjoy walks, bike rides, horse riding and grab a chance to explore our beautiful countryside then why not book a

GO ON A TRIP TO MOROCCO... KIND OF!

THE BEDFORD CLANGER

I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYE

An exhibition at the Foyer Gallery, Bedford School exploring the

senses through mixed media by Anne Marie Stijelja
Anne-Marie Stijelja is a mixed media artist, workshop provider and
art space curator. Her latest exhibition entitled I spy with my little
eye fulfils a long held desire to explore art using the five senses and
will be on display in the Foyer Gallery of Bedford School from 5th
June 3rd July where Anne-Marie also works part-time as an Art
Technician.
On visiting art galleries, Anne-Marie confides that she has
difficulty stopping herself from touching the work on display. I
have an urgent compulsion to touch every sculpture I come into
contact with, in order to help me understand its form and gain a real
connection with the piece. I am continually frustrated when I see
children warned off touching objects when they are intrigued by what
they are confronted with and all they want is a greater understanding
through touch.
As part of the preparation for this exhibition Anne-Marie worked
with the visually impaired at the Touch and See workshops at
Bedford Arts and Crafts Centre at Raleigh House in Bedford. This
provided a significant insight into how art can be seen and created
by the blind and visually impaired, with some of their work included
in Anne-Maries exhibition.
Pieces on show range from a giant kaleidoscope, enabling visitors
to look through and create their own unique patterns to a Touch Me
mystery box requiring the visitor to delve inside - if they dare.
The exhibition includes collaborations with local artists including;
Carpenter: Tom Frost, 3D Artist: Darren Tyrie, Sculptor: Jim Francis,
Bakers: Sam Rose and Pavilion at the Park. Everyone is welcome to
the opening night on the 5th of June 7.30pm 9pm.

EUROVISION

FLITTON POTATO RACE

This is not in Bedford, but its so bonkers and brilliant that
we had to include it! The Potato Race has traditionally been
run in Flitton (on-and-off) for the last 100 years. Participants
run exactly one mile from one end of the villages to the other,
finishing at the pub (natch!). Participants traditionally carried
a hundred-weight of potatoes but these days, due to health
and safety restrictions, men run carrying 20kgs and women
run with 10kgs. There are also relay races for all ages and
even a spud and spoon race for young children.
Last year over 250 people took part. Unbelievably, some
ultra-fit competitors can run the full mile, with spuds, in
under six minutes!
There is lots of information on our website, and people
can also register to take part. For more information and to
register to take part: flittonpotatorace.co.uk

THE SPICE SHOP

19 - 21 High Street, Bedford, MK40 1RY tel: 01234 348924

spiceshoprestaurant.co.uk
The first thing which hits you in the dark interior is the smell of incense. Then,
as your eyes adjust, theres the otherworldliness of its dcor and atmosphere
part Goan beach hut, part opium den. Spice Shop transports the visitor with its
hip 70s vibe, all brown wood and soft furnishings, and the trace of something
fiery cooking in the kitchen. Its a trip outside of Bedford and the generic curry
house to something much more exotic and fashionable.
As a restaurant Spice Shop prides itself on authenticity and not stretching
the menu beyond what can be cooked from fresh. What youd expect from a
Bengali restaurant is there: bhuna, madras and jalfrezi, and the chicken korma
has the perfect kid-friendly mix of cream, yoghurt and almond nut paste. But
theres also enough to satisfy the most adventurous of Bengali devotees such
as gamey mutton chops slow cooked with spices, and lamb and liver karai,
the latter a dish with the rump, heart and liver of lamb sautd in a skillet with
onions, ginger, garlic, peppers & chilli. Theres also a quail dish for those who
want to go completely native.
And what did your intrepid diner have? Lamb bhuna, garlic naan and rice.
OK, not the most courageous of choices, but its such a staple dish I had to have
it. Lucy, as uninhibited as ever, had the fish fry 3 ways a dish of fresh tilapia
pakora, sardines cooked in a spicy tomato paste, and shredded mackerel stirfried with onions, chillies and dry shrimp all done in a true home-style recipe.
Both were delicious: spicy, deep and with enough provocation in the mouth to
send out the right signals. Ive now visited the Spice Shop twice and no dish has
disappointed. So a big yes to the dishes, yes to value for money, yes to dcor,
yes to the efficient service which, it has to be said, is growing in confidence.

Established in February 2014, Franklins Cider is an

all-natural proper cider from sunny Biggleswade which
has launched in selected pubs and restaurants in Bedford
this year.
In brewing theres been a move away from the big
brands towards local producers, said Franklins Simon
Bailes when we meet at his cidery in Dunton. There is
more of an appetite for something different in pubs and
drinkers are more willing to try new brands.
There are three Franklins tipples, all highly rated by
the Clangers self-appointed cider specialist. Fuddle
(a medium sweet cider), Gasper (a dry cider) and
Duntons. This is a medium dry cider that got us into
cider making in the first place, explains Simon. Its a
bit of a mongrel of a cider made from whichever apples
people give to us or that are available from trees close to
Dunton, the home of Franklins Cider.
Franklins Cider is very much a family affair, with
Simons kids helping to label the bottles to earn some
pocket money. He also organises community apple
picking events and cider making courses.

Herd is the newest bar and restaurant to open on St Cuthberts

Street, taking over the vacant building that was formerly Monkey
Murals. And what a transformation!
Serving British, organic dry-aged steak burgers, Herd brings casual
dining to a whole new level in Bedford. The ground floor now houses
a bar serving craft beers, a stylish lounge and a dining area with high
bench seating. Ive had a vision for this kind of bar/restaurant for
about 10 years, said Herd founder, Matt Wolton. And this location
has always appealed to me. We used the empty space for a couple
of pop up parties recently and that confirmed to me the potential of
the building. Matt worked at Pizza Express for 11 years and then at
Orlandos on Commercial Road. Fans of Orlandos will be thrilled to
hear that Ollie is the resident chef at Herd.

IN 360
Fancy! Bakery on Roff Avenue is one of our favourite hang outs. You can often find us
there having a meeting, relaxing with the kids, reading the paper and scoffing their delicious
chocolate brownies. And now we can feel like were there even when were not, with
these Google Business View photographs taken by Simon Smith. Google Business View
photography helps people find businesses online and then take a virtual look around. Owner
of Fancy Bakery, Saffron Denton, said: We love how the pictures have turned out and its
great people can now walk around Fancy Bakery online and see what we have to offer.
Simon Smith says: 360 photography is really easy and can take as little as half an hour to
capture, plus some business have seen a 30% increase in trade since putting the photos online.
To get the full effect of Fancy Bakerys 360 tour search for them on Google+ and

The Palgraves had a big impact on the

architecture of the town centre and in
particular the High Street. David Fowler,
of the Bedford Tour Guides tells us more:
Although the most impressive building in
the High Street on St Pauls Square looks
as though it must have been built as a bank
and many will remember it as Lloyds Bank
for 40 years until the late 1970s, it was
actually built by Charles Palgrave, twice
Mayor of Bedford, as a chemist shop in
1849. The Palgraves had been Chymist
and Druggists in Bedford for 70 years,
when Charles decided he needed premises
befitting his station, with a chemist shop on
the ground floor and living quarters above.
He engaged his nephew Robert Palgrave,
the son of a Bedford Townsman, a London
architect and a pupil of Sir Gilbert Scott, to
design the rather grand building. The shop
continued after Charles death in 1854,
eventually moving and becoming the wellknown chemists Taylor, Brawn & Flood.
John Howards shop and works almost
next door (now a part of Wilkinsons) was
prospering, James and Frederick took
over from their father and in 1858 Robert
Palgrave was appointed as the architect
for the new Britannia Works on Kempston
Road opposite the Infirmary, which for sixty
years was the largest exporter of agricultural implements in the country. The Italianate
entrance, described at the time as the portal
to some Sybaritic Castle of indolence,
or some Luxurious place of learning or
anything indeed other than a temple of
industry is all that survives. In 1864 the
Works were visited by General Garibaldi,
the hero of Italian Unification, who rode in
a carriage up the High Street, which was
decorated with flags and banners, and where
he was mobbed by the crowds on his way
to a demonstration of steam ploughing at
Clapham Park.
Perhaps Robert Palgraves greatest
contribution to the civic landscape came
in 1865-8 when he designed the complete
rebuilding of the tower and spire for St
Pauls Church, together with the erection
of the north and south transepts, resulting
in the Church we see today. He also carried
out other work locally including designing
the new Wesleyan Chapel in Cauldwell
Street in 1865 and St Johns Church at
Up End, Kempston in 1867, both since
demolished.

ITS TOUGH BEING

A PROMOTER
BY PAUL HUTCHINSON, CO-FOUNDER OF BEDFORD FILM FESTIVAL
Successfully promoting your event is the single most important thing to its overall success, and it
is also the most difficult to get right.
But, if people dont know about the things going on locally, who is to blame? The promoters who
say theyve been shouting about their event far and wide, or the public who appear to be apathetic?
Really its both, but as this article is short, and the apparently apathetic public wont be reading this
magazine anyway, the best I can do right now is talk to those who may be promoting an event.
Sending out a press release once, handing out leaflets on one afternoon, or just posting your event in
one Facebook group is not enough. Follow up your release with a phone call to talk about it, hand out
leaflets at multiples times and locations, and post regularly (without spamming) on every appropriate
Facebook group.
When it comes to media, yes send things to the more established news desks but also include
cultural magazines like The Clanger and blogs in your distribution. There is a whole network devoted
to promoting events like yours but its surprising how many people forget about them. Plug into other
groups too.
Finally manage your expectations. Youre no doubt incredibly passionate but if you expect everyone
else to be the same you will be disappointed. Be realistic about how interested people are likely to be
and simply try and grow interests through your efforts, dont ever assume your event is so good people
will know about it automatically.

JUNE IS THE MONTH YOU MUST SPEND IN YOUR GARDEN!

BY JANE PERRONE @JANEPERRONE
PERRONE.BLOGS.COM

I once told a very posh, very famous garden designer

that June was the month I generally went on holiday. His
head swivelled, his eyes bulged and he said in a pained
half whisper, but June is the month you absolutely must
spend in your garden! And he was right. Even if your
garden looks distinctly half-hearted most of the year,
June is when nature really puts on a show.
So its time to clean up the barbecue, put up the
parasol, clear the childrens half-inflated footballs out
of the pond and use your garden to its full extent while
the evenings are long and warm. Here are ten awesome
things you can be doing in your garden or on your
allotment this month.
1. Try stargazing. On a clear night, put the tent up
in the garden, turn all the house lights off and let the
kids stay up late to stare at the heavens. You dont even
need a telescope or other fancy kit: after 30 minutes
your eyes will adapt to the dark. Try downloading the
Star Chart app to your smartphone so you know what
youre looking at.
2. Go on a compost heap safari. There is no end
to childrens fascination with creepy crawlies, and
rightly so - get over any squeamishness and these
are fascinating creatures (Google slug reproductive
system, I dare you). Most compost heaps contain
everything from devils coach horses and woodlice
to toads and common lizards: take a camera and a
notebook and see what you can find.
3. Feed the hedgehogs. If you think there are
hedgehogs living in your garden or passing through,
leave out a bowl of water and some food (cat or dog
food is fine, but not milk and bread): place it on a tray
of flattened sand, then youll be able to see exactly
whos been popping by for a snack.
4. Make a stumpery. The Victorians may have
invented them but stumperys are all the rage these days
(theres one at Highgrove, dontcha know?). A stumpery
is a shady part of the garden thats converted to a slice
of ancient woodland (or a fairy garden, if your kids like

10

that kind of thing) with stumps of old trees interplanted

with hostas, ferns and the like. If you dont have any
tree stumps lying around, chunky logs do just as well.
5. Do a Banksy. Grab a box of chunky chalks
and get scribbling on your patio. Whatever your
message, political or artistic, it will all wash away
with a downpour of rain, so have fun and let your
imaginations run wild.
6. Make a wildlife pond. Were not talking about
Monets water gardens here - even an upturned dustbin
lid can make a fantastic habitat for dragonflies, frogs,
and even our local speciality, the midwife toad. Dig
out a hole big enough so your container sits flush with
the soil surface, top up with rainwater and add some
native oxygenating plants (water violet, hornwort
and starwort, for instance) - just dont add goldfish as
theyll the natives.
7. Learn to love moths. Some people get freaked out
by moths, but they are the coolest creatures once you
get to know them. Hang a white sheet near an outside
light or shine a torch onto it and visit mothscount.org
to identify your finds.
8. Grow a bean wigwam. Secure a dozen or so
bamboo canes or hazel rods in a wigwam shape,
plant some runner beans or climbing French beans
underneath and create your own green hiding-place for
the summer.
9. Forget the lawn mower. Let the dandelions grow,
for the bees sake. Lie on the grass. Make daisy chains.
Listen to the sound of your own breathing. Let a beetle
crawl across your hand. It costs you nothing, and is just
as effective at bringing you back to your senses as that
self-help book you just bought.
10. Enjoy someone elses garden. If you get bored
of your own patch, make a date for the Carlton open
gardens and scarecrow festival. Its on Sunday June 7,
from 1.30pm to 5.30pm, with teas served in Carlton
village hall, entry 4 for adults, under 12s free. This
quintessentially English event is fun as well as raising
funds for local charities and churches. See you there!

CHILDRENS BOOK
FESTIVAL ATTRACTS
AWARD WINNERS

BOOKTASTIC CHILDRENS BOOKFEST HAS ATTRACTED BEST-SELLERS, AWARD

WINNERS AND CHILDRENS FAVOURITES TO BEDFORD, WHEN IT RETURNS ON
SUNDAY 28TH JUNE AT ITS NEW HOME, THE UNIVERSITY OF BEDFORDSHIRE.
Chris Riddell (Coraline), Kes Gray (Daisy), Steve Cole
(Astrosaurs) and Robin Stevens (Wells and Wong) are some of the
nationally and internationally renowned guests to join Bedfords
finest home-grown authors and illustrators.
The festival has a packed programme bursting with activities to
introduce Bedfords youngsters to the magical, mysterious world
of books. Families will meet some of our most inspiring writers
and illustrators, as well as participating in interactive workshops
in theatre, language and creativity.
Rachael Rogan, co-founder of BookFest, is particularly
delighted that the event has found a new home for 2015, at the
newly developed University of Bedfordshire: Our aim is to
engage every young person in Bedford and develop their love
of reading. Holding BookFest at the University opens up the
campus to everyone, which we hope will make Higher Education
accessible to all.
In particular, BookTastic are excited to welcome Alison Crooke,
British Sign Language interpreter, to the Main Stage. Alison will be
signing alongside the main authors sessions so that young people

who are deaf or hard of hearing can get the most out of the day.
The BookFest is also working with some of Bedfords multiheritage organisations to ensure they capture the diversity of
culture that makes our town so great. Elena Ramos, a tutor at
the Centre, is looking forward to the opportunity: At Bedford
Language Centre we create multicultural awareness programs
connected with language to celebrate our rich cultural diversity.
We are excited to be part of the Book Festival and share this with
the children of Bedford.
Thanks to the support from several fantastic local businesses,
the Booktastic BookFest can offer tickets at a heavily subsidised
rate. This year sees the launch of their Pay It Forward
programme where families can choose to buy additional tickets, to
enable everyone to participate.
Entry to BookFest is 3 per person; author readings are
individually priced at 5 and are limited due to the space
available. Festival tickets are available by contacting the team at

A judging panel consisting of some

Emily Tapp, a freelance food
photographer whos currently
studying for her A Levels, entered
a trio of her photographs into the

category with her Spices and Spoons photograph.
I am delighted to have won this award, especially as the judging panel included so many
highly regarded professionals in their field, said Emily, who freelances for a range of food
and clothing companies and magazines.
It really was a fantastic evening on The Mall. Not only did I meet Michel Roux Jr (chef)
and Jay Rayner (journalist and food critic), but also my food photography inspiration and idol
David Loftus, who presented me with my award. Being able to speak to people like David,
who has worked with the likes of Jamie Oliver, is really inspiring and you cant help but learn

THE LAST WORD

BY REVEREND SHARON GRENHAM-TOZE,
PRISON CHAPLAIN, HMP BEDFORD
I was delighted the other evening to look out of my kitchen
window and spot my youngest settling herself down on the lawn
with a blanket, cushion and book. Curled up in the last golden
rays of the day she was finding pleasure in an age old way.
Teaching a youngster to read, and enjoy reading, has surely got to
be one of the most worthwhile tasks in the world.
I like using technology as much as anyone, and youll find plenty
from me on Facebook and Twitter, but I still think theres nothing to
beat the sense of entering another world which you get from turning
the pages of a book. Even the smell of a real book can set off all kinds
of memories and associations. Which is why my house will never
look like a trendy, minimalist space too many groaning shelves!
Story-telling comes in many forms though not just written, but
also visual, spoken, and experienced. In our lives, were part of a
vast network of stories our own, those of others, even that of our
neighbourhood and country. As residents of Bedford were tied up
in the past, present and future of this town. We can bring its history
alive, we can promote the huge array of events and activities Bedford
has to offer, and we can have an effect on how things go from here
its not just in the hands of politicians and the powerful we can tell
the story too!

I often encourage the people who come to me for advice and

guidance to tell me the story of their own lives and through the
telling of it they begin to see the patterns, make the connections.
When we understand the twists and turns of our personal tale so far,
were much more able to change the direction from here on, and find
a different way in the world. Seeing ourselves as part of a bigger
picture can help us to find purpose, as well as lift us above some of
the things that might otherwise get us down.
I can often get bogged down in the frustrations of the daily processes in prison. The bureaucracy, the obstacles, the paperwork! We can
all feel apprehensive about the possibility of more cuts, and when
someone my team has worked with comes back inside again its easy
to feel discouraged. But time and time again I remind myself, and
my team, to recall the positive stories, thinking of the ways, however
small, that weve contributed to someone elses life in a good way.
Our story, our guest appearances in the lives of others what are
we leaving behind?
There might never be books published about any of us, but
when we settle into the last golden rays of our life, may our story,
and the chapters weve written, be full of character, adventure and
positive connections.
