Manuscript Material. (1) P. Itis contained in the codex numbered 425, according to the catalogue of 1916 of The Bhan- darkar Oriental Research Institute, This codex tains the text ofthe Magdakt Sits, which was cola cd by me forthe edition ofthat work as ms. @. The Pectlianties of the codex are the. same throughout. ‘The reader may, therefore, look for these on pages 1 and 2 of the introduction of my edition ofthe Manga. Sika, (2) D. The codex which contains this ms. is 64/1884-86 of The Bhandarkar Oriental Research To. stitute. Ma. of my edition of the Mapdakt Siksa forms apart of this codex. Its peculiarities. may also be studied in the introduction above refered to There is only one more ms. of Atharvana Jyotiga Known to me. It forms a part of the ‘codex No 400 of the extalogue of 1916 of the B. 0. R. Unfortuna. tely the fiat 24 leaves of this codex, which contin a part of our text “are entirely damaged.” Hence its Toan for collation work was not asked, Ms, P was copied a the end of Nov. 1920, wile the variants of D. were noted daring the last days of March 1921. U1, The Text. ‘The present text based as it is on two mss. only, can not be regarded asa fial one, However, ia the absence of any new materials forthcoming I thought 2 Atharvana jyotiva it advisable to present to the student of Jyotiga litera: eas of, in good jons, and the text of the Atharvaga jyotisa is now Put before the scholars ia print for the first time. It ‘will help them to judge about its value, inspite of the apparent grammatical mistakes, which have been left ‘quite unaltered. ‘The name of the text and its author. At the end of the work the writer calls this text by the name of “smemifrem,” XIV. 11 I have, how- ever, given it the title of Atharvana jyotisa, as in harmony with the already known Arca jyotiga and the ‘Yajuga jyoisa’s. Now, as regards the author. Ifthe authority of the text is to be believed, then the author of the ‘Atma jyoti ‘Svayambbu Brahma; and the whole subject was related by him to some descendant of Kaéyapa. But this is doubtfl, rather impossible. ‘According to Aryan tradition Svayambbu Brabms is a personality of Adi srsti, and at that time the four ‘Vedas did not possess their aks. Now the Atma jyotigam ends with the colophon -— thea deworerat” Thich shows that our text is closely related to the maka éakha of the Atharva Veda, and not the “Atlarya Veda proper, Heace it isa" compilation of | an age much posterior to. that of Svayambhu Brahma. ; leis Probable that some one has compiled this small Bee eaesak cos nel fon te or nal law-book of Manu, the descendant of Svayambhu " Introduction 3 Brabma, and later on adding to it some new and quite recent notions. It is on this account that we find so ‘many sloka’s of Manusmrt in the present text. Cf, XIII. 14 with Manu TIT, 46-49. Chapter XI, and parts of XII and XIV of Atma jyotisa although not taken from Manu, are still a compilation from some old ‘grhya paddhatis® and minor smrt's, IY. The date of the work. Nothing can be said with certainity about the date of the present work. It appears to be a new work, although T do not deduce this result. from the mention in it of the names of the week-days. These names may be as old as Aryan civilization itself, and may not have been extensively used in Vedic or Sans: Ikrit literature on account of the requirements of the, thé system in the Yajna affairs. ‘There is on the other hand, the general theme of the work, which attaches to it a lateness in the history of Sanskrit literature, and shows that it has little or no connection ‘with the other Vedinga jyotiga's. Another important fact may be mentioned here, Atharya Veda being a ‘Veda, which deals with medicine and household life especially, required a Vedanga jyotisa to help in the performance of the duties of a good grhastha = house= holder, For this purpose there may have been an ancient Atharvana jyotisa, and if it did not exist, or lost, then some body has tried to fill in this gap “Months aftr the above lines wore writen, I accured 9 ams of Rent KEviMR nthe PHvaskare Gris Sate This KReR ‘hasbeen writtn in tho Saka year 115. it contnins (leaf 2, oka aTb-S3) loka’ with small variants oly, ae ar found fn gue txt XUIL 5-1, 4 Asharveya sytva by this Atma jyotiga, compiled according to the ‘no- tions of his own age, which may be very recent. The text of this Atma jyotiga is not very old may also be in- ferred from another fact. Atma jyotisa VII. 6 says:— whe: mregarat stat wet Ha I i These jyotisa treatises are very recent. Hence the work quoting them, cannot be very old. Again Atma jyotisa IX. 1 states -— meored werkt rear Bait I The context shows that here also the neo-Bhrgu- fsmis referred to and not the old one. All these things put together strengthen the view that the trea- . tise isnot a very old one. V. The division of time into days, muhar- tas etc, in this and other ancient works. ‘Atma jyotisa I, 4 ard 5 states the division of a mubfrta into its smaller parts. This division is found in other works of Sanskrit literature, and it will be in- teresting to compare them all here. ‘The idea of dividing a mubGrta into its smaller fa not, anew one. Ttis found in a mantra of ‘some lost Sakha of the Vedas. This mantra has been preserved by the Tittirya Aragyaka. It is as follows :— 4 Fie siRt Fae: geTea 1 seat ames sreraetre Ee: ‘fends area, we to 18151 Tt is this division which has been later on accept- ‘a good many authorities on this subject. ft) Manusmpti in its present form is certainly Introduction 5 prior to the 1th century B.C.* It has the following verse on this subject -— fairer ga anh & rer fees aT: AT ferent aga: rei gaat Mt Jolly’s edition I. 64. fe, 18 nimega’s = 1 kasthia go kagtha’s <1 kala jokalt’s =1 mobtrta 40 mobiirte's= 1 day and night. Concerned only with the Atma jyotisa for the time being, as we are, we can say, that although ‘mainly agreeing with type (a), it still shows a small difference, nowhere else to be found. How arose this difference “is a question for the astronomer to settle. We can only say that the pre- sent text is related more to the Dharmaéistras, than to jyotiga proper. ‘Tam greatly thankful to Mahamahoptdhyaya Pt. ‘Siva Datta ji who very kindly went tarough the text, after it has been printed, proposed emendations, and hielped me in making the corrigenda.
