Major problems in writing letters

1. Expression
2. Structure

Things that are important in writing

1. Apply the Grammar
2. word bank

Basic elements for writing letters are;

1- Sentence
2- Paragraph
3- Composition

Sentence: we have three type of sentence

Sentence

Simple Compound Complex

Conjunction: conjunction is a word which joins two words or clauses or sentences.

Conjunction

Coordinating Subordinating

Coordinating
• There are relatively few co-ordinating conjunctions, and being by far the most common.
Below are some of the more commonly used.

and or
and so yet
and then neither...nor
but not only...but also

• Remember that co-ordinating conjunctions will also co-ordinate words which are not clauses,
such as co-ordinating two adjectives (a red and shiny nose) or two nouns (apples and pears). To
determine if the conjunction is co-ordinating two clauses look for the finite verb in each clause.

• Sometimes using and would be too clumsy and repetitive, so a comma is used instead to
separate a string of co-ordinated clauses. This is particularly a feature of lists of clauses and in each
case it would always be possible to insert the word and to replace the comma (though with
infelicitous consequences!). The opening to Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities offers a good example of
this:
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of
foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity...

Subordinators:
• Subordinate clauses can be formed using subordinating conjunctions or by using relative
pronouns (that, who, whose, which). There are a wide range of subordinators, expressing a rich variety
of meanings. Some of them are listed in the box below.
Because until
When although
Where since
Why as
Unless after
If while
In order to rather than

Clauses: A clause is a grammatical unit which operates at a lower level than the sentence but at
a higher level than words or phrases.
• It is sometimes helpful to think of the clause as a building block for sentences, helping to
develop and expand the sentence as necessary. The verb is a key constituent of a clause. So a clause
could consist of:

One word Eat!

Two words Sally wept.
Three words I think so
...and so on.
Clause

Main Subordinating

Main Clause is an independent clause (Subject +Verb)

Subordinating Clause is a dependent clause (Subordinate conj + S + V)

Example:
Main Clause {{my dog loves pizza crust}}
Subordinating clause {{because my dog loves pizza crust}}

Sentence:
1- Sample sentence or the main clause are both the same

Prepared by: Mohammad Halim Page 3

National University of Modern Languages

Subject + Verb (which can convey complete meaning)

2- Compound: at least two main clauses or sample sentence or combine by coordinating

conjunction.
For example:
*Canada is a rich country
*It has many poor people

Canada is a rich country, but it has many poor people

Advantage of Compound sentence

1- Style
2- Variety
3- Link up
4- Equal rank sentence can be connected

3- Complex sentence: the sentence which have at least one main clause or plus dependent
clause and to combine bother there should be a subordinating clause
For example:
*It is made of Gold
* I have a chain
I have a chain, which is made of Gold

Lincoln’s Letter to his Son’s Teacher

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just, all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel
there is a hero; that for every selfish Politician, there is a dedicated leader… Teach him for
every enemy there is a friend,
Steer him away from envy,
if you can, teach him the secret of quiet laughter.
Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick… Teach him, if you can, the wonder of books… But also
give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and the
flowers on a green hillside.
In the school teach him
it is far honourable to fail than to cheat… Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if
everyone tells him they are wrong… Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough
with the tough.
Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the band wagon… Teach

him to listen to all men… but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and
take only the good that comes through.
Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad… Teach him there is no shame in tears, Teach him to scoff at
cynics and to beware of too much sweetness… Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the
highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag on his heart and soul.
Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob and to stand and fight if he thinks he’s right. Treat him gently, but do not
cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
Let him have the courage
to be impatient… let him have the patience to be brave. Teach him always to have sublime
faith in himself, because then he will have sublime faith in mankind.
This is a big order,
but see what you can do… He is such a fine little fellow, my son!
~ Abraham Lincoln
