Stages of the Lesson


Warm-up: The teacher greets the students, introduces the guest and asks if anybody is
absent. Then she asks a student to get out of the class and the others to put their heads on
the desks. After that she makes some changes in the classroom. She invites the S in and
asks him: What has changed? He has to notice the changes and answer with the present
perfect tense. (5 minutes)
Activity 1
Aim: - to elicit from the Ss the way the present perfect simple is formed.
Interaction: T-Ss
Time: 5 minutes
Procedure: The teacher writes the answers on the board and the Ss have to say how this
tense is formed and everything they remember about it.
Materials: blackboard
Activity 2
Aim: - to practise the tense
Interaction: Ss-Ss; T-Ss
Time: 6 minutes

Procedure: The T gives a handout to the Ss and they have to solve the first exercise from
the paper individually and then to correct the mates exercise. Then the exercise in
corrected in front of the class. Any explanations are given if necessary.

Activity 3
Aim: - to revise for, since
Interaction: T-Ss
Time: 5 minutes
Procedure: The T plays The time game with the Ss. She says a sentence (eg. Ive
known him since March.) and a S has to repeat after her. Then she gives only the ending
of the sentence (eg. .two weeks) and another S has to repeat the same sentence but
with a different ending, using since and for.
[other endings: July, three days, 1998, ten years, yesterday, ages, Saturday, a while, an
hour and a half]

Aim: - to practise for, since
Interaction: Ss-Ss, T-Ss
Time: 5 minutes
Procedure: The Ss do exercise II from the handout and then check the answers with the T.
Any explanations are given if necessary.

Activity 5
Aim: - to practise all the adverbs (never, just, already, yet, for since)
Interaction: Ss-Ss, T-Ss
Time: 6 minutes
Procedure: The Ss have to answer some questions using the above mentioned adverbs
(ex. III from the handout).

Activity 6
Aim: - to produce sentences of their own with the tense
Interaction: Ss-Ss, T-Ss
Time: 6 minutes
Procedure: The T divides the class in two teams. She writes on the board a list of nouns.
The 2 teams will have 3 minutes to make sentences with these words using the present
perfect simple. The winner is the team that has written all the sentences correctly or has
done only a few mistakes.
Materials: notebooks
[the words: cat, dentist, tree, love, house, person, Roger, Wales, computer, car]
Activity 7
Aim: - to practise the present perfect simple playing
Interaction: Ss- Ss, T-Ss
Time: 10 minutes
Procedure: In three groups the Ss are given a big sheet of paper which contains 3
exercises with the present perfect simple. After 5 minutes, the T takes the papers, sticks
them on the walls and the others come to see if the other groups did the exercises
correctly. If not, they correct. The group with no mistakes is the winner.
Materials: big sheets of paper.
Homework: exercise IV from the hand out. (2 minutes)
