A photographers eye: Residents work on display

Library showcases
critically acclaimed
photographer
Reginald Wickham
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
If youve ever met anyone that
was at the right place at the right
time, youre looking at him.
That one quote from critically
acclaimed photographer and 20year Mt. Laurel resident Reginald
Wickham can be used to describe
many of the stories the now 84year-old photographer revealed
when asked to reflect back on a
lifes work.
The colorful, abstract designs
that might adorn a textbook from
McGraw Hill and Prentice Hall,
jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespies
1970 album Portrait of Jenny,
the brochure for a Holiday Inn
hotel, or even a past national advertisement from Eastman Kodak
all are outlets where Wickhams
photography has surfaced over
the years.
Wickham, a New York native,
recalled his most successful
show at a restaurant in New
York City that featured artwork
on the wall, during which he didnt actually sell anything, but
where a man left him a business

Put down the gas pump: Legislators say no to self-service at gas stations
here arent too many times
when youll read a pro-government-restriction opinion in
this space. As you can probably tell by
our previous diatribes, we mostly
stand for free enterprise without restrictions.
But today, we are in a nutty mood.
Were all for keeping government restrictions in place, at least at the gas
pump.
Last week, state legislators put a
swift halt to a potential proposal to lift
New Jerseys gas-pumping restrictions and allow drivers to pump their
own gas at the station, and we like
what our elected officials have done in
this case for once.
New Jersey has banned self service
at gas stations for almost 70 years, and
we see no reason to change that now.

Your thoughts
What do you think about New Jerseys
ban on self-service gas stations? Share
your thoughts on this, and other topics,
through a letter to the editor.

Sure, as many people have argued,

having attendants pump our gas for us
is in New Jersey culture. Its part of
who we are spoiled people who dont
have to brave the heat, the cold, the
rain, the wind or the snow to re-fill our
gas-guzzling automobiles.
Sure, its nice to have a gas attendant pump our gas and provide an
extra level of security when we need
to fill up on a not-so-crowded road at 4
in the morning when were avoiding
Shore traffic on a holiday weekend.
But the biggest reason we believe

New Jersey shouldnt lift the restrictions on pumping gas is because it

would cost a lot of people a job.
There are thousands of people in
New Jersey who have a job pumping
gas. Even if its not a high-paying job,
it still provides necessary income for
those workers. Lift the ban, and these
people will instantly be out of a job.
If allowing self-service gas pumping
would significantly reduce prices at
the pump, then our stance might be
different. But estimates say the switch
would only save a few cents per gallon,
which means the real winners would
be the gas station owners not the
drivers.
So thumbs up to the recent decision
to not lift the government restriction.
It might be the last time you read
those words in this space.

Then there was the time Wickham was in a bookstore where he
struck up a conversation with a
woman about their careers.
The woman, with Prudential

took pictures of interiors and exteriors of buildings. Laughingly,
Wickham remembers telling her
those types of photos where his

What else am I going to say? It
became one of my biggest accounts, Wickham said. She gave
me a test job and she liked it.
Wickhams wife of 57 years,
Eleanor, once had an acquaintance at the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, and
was able to get her husband a
small show at Penn Station with
fewer than a dozen or so 8x10 portraits.
By chance, Wickham said a
representative of Eastman Kodak
saw the portraits, picked one of a
small girl peering around the corner of a building in Harlem, and
said the company would run a national advertisement using the
shot.
It works. Just by having a

Even the first time Wickham

Wickham at age 11 filled the role.
However, in addition to the
right place at the right time,
Wickham also extols the virtue of
determination.
A goal Wickham had for many
years was to be published by Popular Photography, which he describes as a desire of every photographer. Wickham said the publication turned him down 14

and caring staff who go above and beyond
for residents, she quickly decided to turn
her 30-day respite stay into her permanent
new home. That was six months ago, and
now we are all one big happy family!
DAUGHTER OF A RESIDENT

Led by doctors Carrie Fitzpatrick and Adam Heinze, eight

Alvernia students will apply their
studies of water filtration to the
Santo Domingo barrio in the Dominican Republic.
Alexis Bendyna of Mount Laurel, is studying communication at
the university.
Bendyna completed a cross-dis-

cipline biology/communication
course in the spring, during
which students studied water filtration and literacy. In addition,
they raised enough money to
sponsor a year's worth of water at
a school run by the Bernardine
Franciscan Sisters in the Los
Tres Brazos barrio of Santo
Domingo.

"This faculty-led study abroad

experience is part of Alvernia
University's Global Learning initiatives and builds on Alternative
Break trips sponsored by Campus
Ministry," said dean Beth Aracena. "This group is ready 'to learn,
to love, to serve' in the mission of
the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters."

how he first got work with academic publisher W.B. Saunders.
When he first called a representative of the company, Wickham remembers her telling him she was
about to go on vacation to Bermuda, and that Wickham should call
back in a year, before she hung
up.
Wickham said he took the
womans words to heart, and he
wrote down her information and
exact instructions.
A year later, about a minute
before the time, I start dialing,
and I got her exactly when she
said, call me next year. She was
so impressed, Wickham said.
So was so impressed that Wickham said the company became
one of his biggest accounts.
Determination. Most people
would take that as a turn off and
never call her again. I didnt,

Wickham said.
Now retired and having long
since raised his two adult children, Reginald and Theresa,
Wickham said he still belongs to
some local camera clubs and
passes time in the second floor of
his home, a studio area stocked
full of his past work and other
keepsakes.
Wickham also has his latest exhibit "Photography by Reginald
Wickham," on display through
June 20 not at the Metropolitan
Museum of Art or in Europe as in
the past, but right around the corner from his home at the Mount
Laurel Library.
Even at this stage in his life,
Wickham said the show came
about simply from him taking a
chance and trying to sell himself.
If I dont sell myself, who is
going to know me? Ill just live
here and thats it, Wickham said.
Theres a lot of talent that goes
to waste because people dont
project. You have to let people
know who you are.

Lenape defends Group 4 crown

SEAN LAJOIE/The Sun

Clockwise from above: The Lenape High School girls lacrosse team celebrates as the final horn sounds
and it caps off a brilliant season by defeating crosstown rival Shawnee High School to capture the NJSIAA Group 4 South Jersey title by a score of 10-7 giving it a spot in the Group 4 state title against Ridgewood at Kean University. One last team breakdown on its home field. No. 19 Emily Hunt scoops up a
ground ball. No. 6 Carlee Braverman makes a break toward the net. Hunt applies some air tight defense
on No. 33 Erika Barrs shot on goal. No. 1 Natalie Peel passes out of traffic as the Indians run off the final
seconds on the clock. Hunt swings over to play some help defense for goalie No. 00 Shannon Gallagher.
