Group Project Presentation and Individual Reflection (15%)


Tasks:

1. Give a 15-minute group presentation (10%)


2. Write an individual reflection based on another groups presentation (5%)

Task 1: Oral presentation (10%)

Instructions: Students form groups of 4-5. Each group is to give an oral presentation in
which each member has to take an equal part.
Topic: The topic of the presentation is an imaginary invention. This invention will solve a
particular problem which people face in everyday life.

Content: The presentation must include

purpose of the invention

description of the invention (what it looks like)

way to use the invention

uses and limitations of the invention

Remarks: If students apply other peoples concepts or ideas, they must provide references.

Length: The total presentation time for each group will be from 10 to 15 minutes. Each
member of the group must present approximately the same length of time.

Mark allocation: The total score for the oral presentation is 10%. This consists of an
individual student score of 7% and a group score of 3%. In other words, students are
evaluated both individually and as a team.
Evaluation: Students will be evaluated according to the Oral Presentation Rubrics.

Final product:
1. Outline: The topic and outline of the presentation must be submitted by Week 5 (February
2-6) for the teachers approval.

The presentation outline must include as much detail as possible, including the topic,
the main subtopic(s) each group member will present, the main supporting details of
each main subtopic, examples, evidence, sources, etc.

2. PowerPoint Presentation: The oral presentations can start in Week 13 (March 30 April 3).
PowerPoint slides must be in an appropriate format.

Slides are NOT for students to read from but for the audience to follow the
presentations main points more easily.

They must limit text to key sentences or keywords only.

Students must not copy information from original sources.

Slides should be a

simplified, summarized version of original material. A rule of thumb is that sentences


should be short.

Slides must not be too filled with information. Most students tend to include too much
information per slide, i.e. they copy whole paragraphs or whole chunks of sentences,
tables, etc. from sources. This is NOT allowed. A rule of thumb is that each slide
should contain no more than 3 lines.

Slides may contain pictures, figures, and/or diagrams as aids.

Students may use a palm card to aid memory but must not be allowed to read from a
script.

Task 2: Reflection (5%)


Instructions: While listening to other groups presentations, students must complete the
presentation worksheet, then choose the invention presented in the class that they like the
most to write a 100-word-paragraph reflection.

Content: The reflection must answer these questions:

What was the invention and its purpose?

How could it be used in everyday life?

Why did they like it?

Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on both content and language quality (See the
Individual Reflection Grading Rubrics).
Submission Date: The individual reflection must be submitted after the group presentations,
by Week 14 (April 6-10).
