ELECTRONIC DETECTOR FOR DETECTION OF HOT OBJECTS

Type FR5
Infrared ray type photoelectric sensor for detection of hot objects whose temperature is greater than
400C. An extremely sturdy and reliable device which ensures maximum precision of detection,
even in the most severe working conditions. The electronic circuit is made up of high quality,
generously dimensioned components.
APPLICATION
Because of its characteristics, the FR5 detector is particularly suitable for use in hot rolling mills,
where it resolves problems relating to the control and automation of:
- pinching rolls
- disc shears
- diverters
- openable pinch rolls
- loopers
- coiling systems
DESCRIPTION
The FR5 detector consists of a compact, light alloy casting including the side closure and cover.
Points are provided for water or air cooling when the detector is fitted in high temperature
environments. The sensitivity control and connecting block are located at the back, in an easily
accessible yet protected position. A pilot light is also fitted at the back, to indicate when the detector
is energised.
PHOTO-CELL
The FR5 detector uses a special lead sulphide (Pbs) photo-cell which is sensitive to infrared
radiation between about 2 end 30 m (micron). This particular response feature makes the photocell exceptionally sensitive to hot objects, which are detected from temperatures of 400C without
being affected by radiation from ambient light.
OPERATION
The greatest difficulties to be overcome when making a photoelectric detector relate to thermal
stabilisation of the circuit and immunity to interference from the mains supply. In the FR5, these
difficulties have been overcome by using a mechanical modulator which makes it possible to
achieve pulsed radiation which, when it acts on the photo-cell, creates a pulsed electric signal with
Fm frequency and amplitude proportional to the intensity of the infrared radiation coming from the
hot object to be detected (the use of the modulator in fact eliminates the effect of variations in the
photo-cells resistance to darkness due to variations in ambient temperature).
This pulsed electrical signal makes it possible to use a.c. electronic amplification circuits, which
provide a strong gain with high thermal stability. In addition, by making the a.c. amplification of
the circuit selective at the Fm frequency, a high degree of rejection is obtained to any interference at

50-60Hz, which therefore cannot affect operation of the FR5. Finally, the use of high quality
components provides the photo-cell with the reliability characteristics described in the introduction.

INSTALLATION
On any type of support provided it is not subject to vibration.
Maximum distance: installation recommended at 1000 to 2000 mm depending on the temperature
and dimensions of the object to be detected. If other sources of infrared rays are present in the
immediate vicinity, it is advisable to install a 30x80 mm rectangular metal tube between the photocell and the rolled section, in order to limit the sensing angle.
