Maturedemotion

Thesamepowerwhich,whenmisgoverned,dragsmendownintomaterialism,alsolifts
themintospiritualawarenesswhendirectedupward.

Whereallaman'sactsaremerelythereflexbehaviourdictatedbyhissenseimpressions,
hehashardlyanylifehigherthanananimalone.Itisthebusinessofthisquesttoinsert
theinfluenceofconsciousnessofthecausesandresultsofhisactions,reason,andwill
intosuchbehaviour.

Therearecertainindestructibletruthswhichrevealthemselvesthroughtheagestoevery
manwho,foratimeatleast,sufficientlymastershisanimalselfandsufficientlyquietens
hishumanself.Thosewhichwemostneedtolearntodayaresimpleandancient,yet
completelyrelevanttothemodernsceneandcompletelyadequatetothemodernneed.

Itiseverywherethestatetodaythatmostpeopleareautomatons,merelyreactingtothe
outwardworldofthefivesensesinamechanicalmanner.Theydonotreallycontrolwhat
ishappeningtothembutmerelydriftwiththeforcesplayingthroughthesensestimuli.
Theconsequenceisthattheydonotactuallypossessorusethepoweroffreewill.They
arepuppetsonNature'sstage.

Whenanyemotiontakesfullpossessionandreachesanextremestage,itbecomesa
passion.

Onedoesnoteasilydiscardthevariouspassions.Thedecisiontodosodoesnotlead,or
evencontributemuch,totheirconquest.Itmerelyannouncesthebeginningofalongwar.
Theyreturn,inspiteofone'swishes,againandagainfortheybelongtotheanimalbody
which,itself,cannotbediscarded.Butintheendamanmustclaimhisbirthrighttoa
higherkindoflife,mustfulfilhisnoblerpossibilities,mustsetupreasonandintuitionas
hismostreliableguides.

Ifyourthoughtsareenergizedbyanoblepassionandyourdeedsinspiredbyalofty
enthusiasm,theyarethebetterforit.Butifyourthoughtsaredistortedbyafoolish
passionandyourdeedswastedbyamisdirectedenthusiasm,theyaretheworseforit.

Thesameambitionwhichstretchedhismindandcapacityformoneymakingorpower
huntingcan,whentransformedintoaspiration,stretchthemfortruthseekingand
characterbuilding.

Itisnoteventhathehastogiveupalldesiresbutthathehastopurifythemandputthem
allunderthedominanceofhisonesupremedesireforattainmentwhichmayormaynot
meantheirextinction.

Man'strueintelligenceisfeeblewhileitremainsimprisonedinegoismandnarcotizedby
sensuality.Hemustliberateitbythephilosophicdisciplinebeforeitcanbecomestrong.

Somanyofourfeelingsandsomanyofourthoughtshaveuntilnowbeendictatedbythe
body.Isitnottimetothinkandfeelalsoasthetrueselfwouldhaveusdo?

Theanimalheritagehasgivenhiminstincts,appetites,impulses,anddesiresthehuman
holdsouthigherpossibilitiestobeworkedforandrealized.

OnemessageoftheSphinxistobalancethehumanmindwiththebrutishanimalinus.
Thisisnotthesameastheascetics'message,whichistoexterminatetheanimal
altogether.

Hewhohasnotovercomehispassionsfindshimselfcompelledtoactagainsttheclearest
warningsofhisreason.

Whatreallymovesamantoactishisfeelingthisiswhythepassions,whicharestrong
feelings,needmoredeliberateeffortofthewilltobringthemunderrestraint.

Anactionwhichisspontaneousandnotacalculatedonethatcanbesafeonlyforthe
enlightenedman.Forothersitmaybemereimpulseormerepassion.

Thepointisnotthatnaturalimpulsesofthebodyarewronghowcouldthatbe?butthat
menhavemadethemwrong.Originallythesatisfactionofthepleasureinstinctwasin
harmonywithhigherwillasalesserpartofagreaterfunction.Butnowhumanwillhas
reverseditsroleandexaggeratedittofirstplace.Theresultisdisharmonyanddisease.

Ononethingallmeninalllandsareagreed,thatitisimmeasurablymorepreferabletobe
releasedfromanxietiesthantosufferthem.Yet,thesesamementhrowthemselvesinto
situationsorbringabouteventswhichwillrivetthechainsofanxietyuponthem.Howis
itthatsuchacontradictionexistseverywhere?Whatcausesthemtodothis?Itisthe
strengthoftheirdesires,thepoweroftheirambitions,thetendenciesinheritedfrompast
births.Thisbeingthecauseofthetrouble,theremedyforitbecomesplain.Themorea
manfreeshimselffromdesires,thatis,themorehemastershimself,themoreishefreed
fromnumerousanxieties.Andevenifhetooissubjecttothepainfultestsandunpleasant
ordealswhichinescapablyaffecthumanexistences,hedoesnotconsiderthemtobe
misfortunesbutasdevicestodrawouthislatentqualities.

Thewayoutfromtyrannicaldesiresmayhavetobestaged.Firstbecomeawitness
indifferentanddispassionateeverytimethereisasurrender.Thiswayistakinganew
direction,startingtodisidentifyfromthedesire.

Ontheonehandhemusttearhimselfawayfromhisearthlypassions.Ontheotherhand
hemustgivehimselfuptohissacredaspirations.

Theeagernessofdesirebetrayshimintoromanticselfdeceptionsandleadshiminto
woundingfrustrations.Theegolureshishopesconstantlyonwardonlytolaceratethemin
theend.

Whilstwearestilllimitedbythebodyanditsinescapableneeds,itisanimpossibletask
toextirpatedesireandnegativeselfinterest.Philosophyaddsthatitisalsoanundesirable
one.Only,putdesireandselfinterestdownintheirproperplace,itsays,donotpermit
themtoobstructhigherandspiritualneeds.

Itisnotthattheyhavetoabandonjoybuttopurifyit.Ifthejoywhichcomesfrom
debasedpleasuresistherebylost,thejoywhichcomesfromennobledthoughtsand
refinedfeelingsisgained.

Whenearthlydesiresareextinguished,calmbefallsaman.

Hemustneedsdeclareopenwaronhisownpassions,forhenowseesthathecannothave
themandpeacetoo.Likeallwarthisonewillwitnessbothvictoriesanddefeats,
hardshipsandsufferings.Butoutofthesebattleswithhimselfhemayprogress,learning
discriminationandgainingwillpower.

Herealizesthathehastobreakhispassionsor,ifuncontrolled,theywillbreakhim.

Inthisworkofpurificationtheneedofmoralintellectualandemotionalhonestywillhave
tobestressed.Itissatisfiedbydiscriminatingexaminationofthoughts,feelings,and
motives,withconstantselfdistrustasaguideinthework.

Themorehetrainshimselftorecognizeandrejecttheimpulsesthatcomefromhislower
nature,themorewillclarityofcomprehensionbecomehis.

Theanimalthatheismustbekeptatbayhisfreedomasamanmustbegainedby
degrees.

Itistruethatthoughtprecedesaction,thatactionsexpressthoughts,andthattorulemind
istoruletheentirelife.Butitisalsotruethatman'sbattleswithhimselfproceedby
progressivestages,thatheexertswillmoreeasilythanhechangesfeeling.Therefore,the
disciplineofinwardthinkingshouldfollowafterandnotbeforeit.Tocounselhimto
takecareofhisinnerlifeandthatthentheouterlifewilltakecareofitself,assomany
mysticsdo,istobeplausiblebutalsotoshowalackofpracticality.Man'sheartwillfeel
nopeaceashismindwillknownopoiseuntilheabandonsthelowerinstinctsandgives
himselfuptothisunearthlycall.First,hemustabandonthemoutwardlyindeedslaterhe
mustdoitinwardlyeveninthoughts.Thiswillinevitablybringhimintoinnerstruggle,
intooscillationbetweenvictoriesanddefeats,elationsanddespairs.Thewayupislong,

hard,rugged,andslowtotread.Itisalwaysastageforcomplaintsandoutcries,battles
andfalls.Onlytimethemasterpowercanbringhimtoitsloftyend.Onlywhenthe
lessonsofbirthafterbirthetchthemselvesdeeplyandunmistakablyintohisconscious
mindthroughdreadfulrepetitioncanheacceptthemcooperatively,resignedly,andthus
putastoptotheneedlesssufferingsofdesire,passion,andattachment.

Whenaman'sdesiresandyearnings,thirstsandlongingsaresostrongastoupsethis
reasoningpowerandblockhisintuitivecapacity,heisstoppedfromfindingtruth.Inthis
conditionheshutshiseyestothosefactswhicharedispleasingorwhicharecontraryto
hisdesiresandopensthemonlytothosewhicharepleasingoragreeabletohiswishes.
Thinkingbendseasilytodesires,sothatthesatisfactionofpersonalinterestratherthan
thequestofuniversaltruthbecomesitsrealobject.

Reformsthatbeginwiththelowestinmanleadthewaytothehighestinhim.The
masteryofanimalpassionopensthedoortothebirthofspiritualintuition.

Whetherthecagebemadeofgoldorthenetfabricatedfromsilk,therealityoftheirinner
captivitystillremains.

Adisciplinewhichisnotsternbutgentleandeasyisbestsuitedtomodernman.

Thefacultyofwillisimmeasurablymoreimportanttotheprogressoftheinnerlifethan
thatofintellect.Forthepassionsandappetitesofthebodyarecontrolledbywillthe
strengthofthelowernatureisattheserviceoftheego'swillratherthanofitsintellect.

andourphysicallife.Yetintimesofcrisissuchassevereillnessandbreakdown,people
dodothatbecausetheyhaveto.Howmuchbettertodoitnotviolentlyandabruptly
underoutwardcompulsionsbuttodoitlittlebylittle,gentlyandeasily,takingourtime
bydoingitthroughapplicationofwisdom.

Whencontrolissoperfectthathecanneveragainraisehisvoiceinanger,heneedturn
attentiontoonlyoneotherpassionthesexual.

Suchachastealoofnessfromthelowerdesiresmaybereachedonlyinpartbytheirfirm
repression.Ifitistobereachedinfull,theremustbeevenmoreanardentpursuitofthe
highestdesirefortheSoul.

TheTaoistmastersdidnotmake,astheBuddhistandHindumastersmade,complete
freedomfromdesireanessentialprerequisite.Theyweresatisfiedtoaskfor"fewnessof
desires"only.

Themanwhocanwinhiswaytofreedomfromangerandfinallyliberatethemindfrom
passionmayneedmuchofhislifetime,ifnotallofit,fortheworkbutwhathegainsis
ofinestimablevalue.ForthisbringshimclosertoawarenessoftheOverself.

Whendesiresdiewithoutregrets,hebeginstotasterealpeace.Whencravingssloughoff
naturally,likeaserpent'sskin,hefindstranquilhappiness.

AsaspirationfortheOverselfgrowsstronger,otherdesiresgrowweaker.

Youmustpossessaninsatiablelongingforlightifyouareevertoemergefromthe
darkness.

Hearrivesatpuritybyacultivateddisciplineofthemindratherthanbyaforcibleatrophy
ofthesenses.

Thethreadlikeintuitionwhichwillleadhimoutofanimalityintoserenity,willbehis
bestguideifhecanfinditandheedit.

Itisnotpossibleforthesefinerelementstobecome,littlebylittle,paramountinhis
outlook,consciousness,andconductwithoutacorrespondingdeclineinthecoarserones.
Hewillgraduallybecometherulerofhisphysicalappetitesandthenmasterofhisbodily
desires.Indeed,asallhislongingsfortheOverselfslowlygatherthemselvestogetherinto
agreatdedicatedlife,thereisanequallygreatshiftoverfromtheanimalpartofhisbeing
tothetrulyhuman,alliedwithanopeningupoftheangelicordivinepart.

Thefruitsofsexualextravagances,theharvestofsexualpromiscuity,thegleaningsof
sexualirresponsibility,andthegratificationsofsexuallicensemustbesubjectedtothe
harddisciplineofreason.Thosewhowillnotdosomustsoonerorlaterpaythepricein
fears,anxieties,irritations,regrets,disillusionments,shames,anddespairs.

Solongasamanidentifieshimselfwiththephysicalbody,solongwillheperforcehave
toidentifyhimselfwithitsdesiresandpassions.Onlywhenhetransfersthisself
identificationtotheinfinitementalbeingcanhecompletelydetachhimselffromthem.

Ofwhatuseisitformentotalkoffreeingthemselvesfromsubjectiontoegoismwhen
theyarestillinsubjectiontopassion?

Thestudentofphilosophywilltrytocomprehendthesensationsgotfromsensual
pleasuresimpartiallyandimpersonally.Manknowsinstinctivelywhatwillgivehim
momentaryemotionalsatisfactionhemustwrestlewithreasontoknowwhatwillgive
himdeependuringhappiness.Reasonmustarbitratewhendifferentpleasurescompetefor
suffrageorwhendutycompeteswithdesire.Desirecarriedtoanundueextentbecomesa
passiondisturbingtotheequilibriumoflifeandcharacter.Whenamanfindsthatdespite
allhiseffortstoimprovehimselfandreformhischaracter,hestillremainsthesame,itis
anindicationthatnewmethodsmustbetried.

Thescourgingofthefleshmaybeneededby,andmayhelp,thosewhofindtheir
overheatedpassionsandlustsgetoutofhand.Butitwillnotendthesetroublesofman,
eventhoughitmaytamethemforatime.Somethingmoremustbeadded,ormust
replacethemfirst,knowledgesecond,workontheprocessofattention.

Theinstinctualanimalurgeplustheambitiousdriveforpowerandthepersonaldesirefor
propertykeepmenfromspiritualaspiration.

Ifheisfilledwithselfishinterestsalone,seekingthefulfilmentofpersonalambitions
irrespectiveofanyhigherconsiderationsifanimalpassionsdrivehimandgreed
dominateshim,heblockshisownway.Purificationfromsuchattachmentsmustbethe
firstendeavour.

Pleasureswhichcorruptcharacterareundesirablebutthosewhichupliftcharacter(like
thefinestworksofBeethovenandHandel)aredesirable.

ThereputedOrientalteachersadvisenayinsistthatseekersmusteliminatealldesires.
Butisnotthesearchitselfnotonlyanaspirationbutalsoadesire?Cantherebepeaceof
mindwhilethisoneremains?Soitisneedfultoputalltheothersinaworldlycategory.
Thisiswhatthemoresemanticmindedteachersdo.Butsincethelastactinthisspiritual
dramaisplayedbytheHigherPower,whynotletitdecidewhattodoconcerningthe
matter?

Theheartmustbecomeemptyofalldesires.Thisbringsabouttheemotionalvoid,which
corresponds,initsownplace,tothementalvoidexperiencedinthedepthofmystical
meditation.Tothisemptinesshemustgivehimself,withithemustsatisfyhimself.Inthis
wayheobeysJesusandbecomes"poorinSpirit."

endforalldesiresandallfears.

blessedness.

Thereistheblindlyinstinctiveandpassionedanimalwillinman,whichviolentlydrives

gentlydrawshimtotranscendthebodyaltogether.

Whatisitworthtoamantobefreefromthepassions,andfreefromtheinnerdivisive
conflictswhichtheiractivitymustnecessarilyproduceinhim?Aretheynotthechief
obstacleswhichpreventhimfromattainingthatinnercalmwhereinalonetheegocanbe
faced,caught,andconquered?Andthisdone,whatistheretokeeptheOverselffrom
takingpossessionofhim?

Fewmenaremovedbyasinglemotive.Formostmenthecontraryisthefact.Thisis
becausefirst,theegoitselfisacomplexandsecond,thehigherandlowernaturesarein
conflict.

Discriminationisneededtopenetratethethinsurfaceofsomanypleasures,whilethe
strengthisneededtosay"No"whenthisiswiserthanacceptingthem.

Itisnotonlyneedfultounderstandthecharacteristicsofone'sdesiresbutalsotheir
source.Thisknowledgewillhelphimtoimprovecharacterandattaintrueselfreliance.

willthereafterbecomepossessedofthepowertoattainit.

ThereisthisgreatparadoxontheQuest:thatthemorethediscipleobtainsthepowerto

conventional,atleastletustrynottojustifyourindulgencebyspeciousreasons.

Theblindimpulsesmustbecheckedbywillpower,thelowernaturemustbedisciplined
andthelowerenergiesdirectedintohigherchannels.Itisperfectlypossible,wherefate
ordains,tolivecontinentlyandchastely,howeverstronglysexedamanmaybe.Butto
achievethishemustutilizetheanalyticreason,thecreativeimagination,andtheactive
willinunderstandinganddisciplininghisenergiesandthenhemustredirectthem
towardsaspirational,intellectual,ormoralideasortransmutethemintopracticalwork.

Hewhobeginsbyrefusingtobeaslavetothepalate'spervertedappetitewillfindit
easiertogoontorefusingtobeaslavetolust.Atriumphovertheonepreparestheway
for,andhelpsintheachievementof,atriumphovertheother.

Itistruethatweallshareananimalbodywiththelowercreatures.Butthatdoesnotforce
ustostayontheirlevelemotionally.

thesatietywhichfollowshelplessyieldingarebothundesirable.

themandthedesiresoftheegoandsecond,adifferencebetweenthetruenecessities
whichareinescapablefromphysicalexistenceandthefalseoneswhichhavebeen
imposedonusbyageoldhabits,traditions,environments,andoutersuggestions.

todaywearemiserableexiles,thewaytoremedysuchasituationisclear.Wemustfree
ourselvesfromtheoneanddisentangleourselvesfromtheother.

Whoeverputsamoralpurposeintolifeautomaticallyliftshimselfabovethephysical
levelofmereanimality.Forhimbeginsastrugglebetweentheslaveryofsenseandthe
freedomofenlightenment,betweenblindemotionanddeliberatewill,betweeninward
weaknessandinwardstrength.Henceforth,heseekshappinessratherthanpleasure,the
calmofasatisfiedmindratherthantheexcitementofsatisfiedsenses.Ifthisisastoic
ideal,itisanecessaryone,forhemustconquerhimself.Hehateshimself,andnoman
canliveinpeacewithwhathehates.

Makesurewhatyoureallywantbeforeyougoafterit.Thebitterexperienceinlifeisto
findafteryearsofeffortthatthethingyouhavegainedisnotthethingyouwant.

Itisadmittedlypainfultotearone'swillawayfromone'sdesiresbutitisstillmore
painfultohaveittornawaybylife'sexperiences.Hence,thephilosophicalmethodto
conquerdesireisatwofoldone.Wemustletitwearitselfoutbysubmittingtoitthrough
experienceandlettingitcomeupagainstinevitabledisappointment,disillusionment,or
sufferingwhilstalongsidethiswemustbecomereflectivelyandanalyticallyawareofits
causes,selfdeceptions,andconsequences.Itisamatterofgraduallylettingthedesires
losetheirintensityuntilwebecomefreeofthemnotthroughtheirforciblerenunciation
northroughthelongdrawnprocessofwaitingforoldagetocomebutthroughthe
processoflearningtolivemoreandmorewithinthesatisfactorybeatitudeofthe
Overself.Wegiveupourdesiresnotbynegatingthembutpartlybycomprehendingtheir
mechanisticcauseandmentalisticnatureandpartlybysupersedingthemwiththeexalted
peaceoftheOverself.

Theundevelopedmindlivesonlyfortheday.Itcanseetheimmediateeventsinaseries
butcannotconjureuptheultimateones.Thediscipledarenotrisksuchablindcondition.
Hemustdeliberatelysetouttobringthetwotogether,bytheuseofcreativeimagination
orbyanalyticreflectionorbyboth.Ifpassionrisesinhim,atleastitscounterbalance,the
mentalpictureoftheevilconsequencesofpassion,risesasecondlaterwithit.

Ifamanisnotfreefromlust,fear,andanger,besureheisnotunitedwiththeOverself,
whateverotherqualities,powers,orvirtuesheshows.

Longcontinuedreflectionturnedsharplyandanalyticallyupondesiresandcravingshelps
tocounterthem,butdoesnotbasicallyweakenthem.Forthat,contraryemotionsmustbe
aroused.Thisismosteffectuallydonebyhappeningsandexperiences.Butbecausethese
aremostlybeyondourchoice,thethirdwaylefttousistoseekGrace.Onewaytoinvite
thisGraceisbysittinginmeditationuponthenonself.

Hemaycomplainofhisweaknessandimmediatelysubmittoatemptation.Orhemay
recognizethattheHigherSelfisalsohimhemaytrytousewillandgrowinstrengthby
thisresistance.

Hefindsthatheisperceptiblypulledawayfromfleshlylusttoadeeperlevelwherethe
calmnessandthejudgementenablehimtorealizethatthelustbelongstohisanimal
physicalinheritanceandnottohisinmostcharacterandthat,therefore,itmaybebrought
undercontrolanddiscipline.Ifheacquiresthepowertoachievethis,itwillcome
imperceptiblyforitwillcomemostlybygrace.

Thesatisfactionofpassionhasaclaimontheanimalbody,butitmustalwaysbesubject
tothehigherclaimsofreasonandintuitionandtheneedforthesenseofhuman
responsibility.

Theamoralisalwaysthefirststeptotheimmoral.

Theideathathehastoattainmasteryoverthedesiresofthefleshisacorrectone.But
thatthismasterywillleadtoreunionwitha"soulmate"isnottheteachingofthebest
mysticsorphilosophers.Whatreallyhappensisareunionwiththetrue"Beloved,"whois
