Astrology Dosha & Sarpa Yoga

-By Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji

Rahu and Ketu are the Lunar Nodes in Vedic Astrology. They are Grahas in that they grab and attach us
to our karma just like the starry Grahas, yet they do not rule over Rasis like the other starry planets.
They are shadows, the eclipse points where the Earths orbit around the Sun intersects with the
Moons orbit around the Earth. Even though they are not physical planets they are perhaps the most
influential forces in the chart. It is along the Rahu / Ketu axis that the main forces of karmic desire are
seen.
The myth of Rahu and Ketu sheds much light on their function and greater possibility. Shortly after the
beginning of time, the Gods and demons were in a terrible war, neither side making any progress. So
they decided to join forces and churn the milk ocean to get the pot of amrita (immortal nectar) at the
bottom. Once the nectar was extracted then came the job of distributing it. The Gods, not wanting the
nectar to fall into the hands of the demons, devised a plan. Lord Vishnu disguised himself as the
enchanting and beautiful Mohini to distribute the nectar. The Gods and Demons were seated on two
different sides of an aisle as Mohini distributed the nectar to the Gods only. The demons were too
enchanted by her beauty to notice she was not giving them the nectar. However one demon, Rahu,
noticed what was happening and disguised himself as a God and managed to get a drink of the nectar.
As soon as this happened, the Sun and Moon told Lord Vishnu what was happening and Vishnu returned
to his form as Vishnu and let fly his sudarshan and chopped Rahu in half, but only after Rahu managed
to take a drink of the nectar. Thus he is immortal, but chopped in half. The head is Rahu and the tail is
Ketu.
Rahu is a head without a body. Everything he comes into contact with he becomes obsessed with, like a
person with a voracious appetite. Rahu represents material desire, but because he is not a physical
planet he operates on the subconscious level. He distorts our perceptions and colors the world
according to his desires. He tends to obliterate the essence of things, focusing on their material
substance. He is our deepest subconscious material desire. Rahu obsesses over the things we need to
learn so we can eventually be freed of them. There are certain lessons we can only learn in a physical
body, in the physical world. Rahus obsessions indicate those things. All human beings are crazy in
some way, Rahu shows the area of life where we are unbalanced and obsessed. Rahu keeps us obsessed
until we learn detachment from what he is influencing. As such, he represents attachment. Losing our
higher Self to the things of this world is the main reason we suffer in life. Rahus obsessions bring
much suffering as long as we desire experience. Once we desire liberation, Rahu is incredibly spiritual.

Ketu is the other half of the demon, the headless body. Where Rahu obsesses over the things of this
world, Ketu seeks to be freed from them. Rahu is material and loses the essence of things in their
substance. Ketu perceives the essence of things but is unsatisfied with anything substantive in the
world. Whereas Rahu wants to grow and experience new things, Ketu wants to fall back on the familiar
and withdraw, creating a fear of stagnation and disgust with the familiar that is often turned inward as
self-disgust. Ketu brings doubt and sharp criticism to the areas of life that he sees. Eternally unsatisfied,
he only notices what is missing from whatever he is influencing. He presides over the absolute aspect of
God. He is strict and exacting and sucks the worldly joy out of all he touches, including the things Rahu is
obsessed over through house and sign. It is the push and pull of Rahus obsession and Ketus doubt
that allows the soul to learn the lessons of the Nodal house and sign placement.
Please refer to verse 8 of the chapter on Naabhasa yogas in BPHS Edited By Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi
Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji. It says
"kendratraya gataih saumyaih paapairvaa".

The expression kendratraya means a "kendra trio" (trio of quadrants). The verse
unambiguously says that benefics or malefics occupying a trio of quadrants form
Maalaa and Sarpa yogas respectively. So, if there are two malefics in one
kendra, another malefic in another kendra and other kendras have no malefics,
then there is no sarpa yoga even though there are 3 malefics in [two] kendras.
Parasara is very clear. I see no reason to contradict Parasara, unless there is
an ambiguity in his teachings. That is not the case here.

Regarding Sun being a benefic or a "paapa" (malefic), I request the learned to

kindly refer to verse 8 in the chapter on Yoga Karakas in BPHS. The Sage
clearly states whether Sun is paapa or not.

"If Sun, Mars and Saturn occupies three different kendras (Quadrants) then Sarpa yoga is formed. They
should be in three different houses and not in conjunctions"
"One born in Sarpa Yoga will be crooked, cruel, poor, miserable and will depend on others for food and
drinks."

In this definition, it is important to identify 'Malefics' or 'paap graha'. In this yoga Malefics are referred
as Natural Malefics. Moon (even if in Krishna Paksha) is not included. Mercury is considered benefic in
Dala yoga (Sarpa yoga is one type of Dala Yoga)
As a default, Rahu and Ketu are excluded in all Nabhas yogas and also in Sarpa Yoga. Some astrologers
include Rahu and Ketu also in Sarpa Yoga. This is a very controversial point.
But Personally,Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji find that If Rahu and Ketu are
counted in Yoga, results of Sarpa Yoga are not experienced. Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree
Dr.Rupnathji himself have Rahu, Ketu and Sun in three different quadrants. And I have no such
experience till now. Even if I experience any such incident in future then also it should not be blamed to
Sarpa Yoga. Because Sarpa yoga is Nabhas Yoga and if applicable it's effects must be experienced
through out the life.
So he prefer to count only three planets as Malefics in this Yoga.
Hence, Malefics mentioned in this yoga means Saturn, Mars and Sun.
So Definition of Sarpa Yoga, in simplest language, comes out to be
"If Sun, Mars and Saturn occupies three different kendras (Quadrants) then Sarpa yoga is formed. They
should be in three different houses and not in conjunctions"
Any yoga not complying to above definition is not a Sarpa Yoga. At least as per Sage Parashara.

Effects of Sarpa Yoga:

Sage Parashara Says"One born in Sarpa Yoga will be crooked, cruel, poor, miserable and will depend on others for food and
drinks."
Myth: There are lot of myths but I did not find any basis for them in Parashara Samhita By Tantra Siddha
Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji or any other ancient text. Mentioning all of them will fill whole
page. So let us concentrate what is fact.
Fact: Well this is fact that this is a bad yoga. And all the effects are usually felt as it is described by Sage
Parashara in above definition. Since it is a Nabhas yoga, it's effects are felt through out the life
irrespective to the Dashas. Person is poor and dependent on others.
But this yoga is not manifested in all charts equally. If there is a strong benefic in Kendra then effects of
sarpa Yoga is reduced to much extent. Also if These malefics are in Friendly houses then also it's effects
are reduced to much extent.

Bottom line is that if we stick to this definition of Sarpa Yoga. Most of the people who are scared of
possible sarpa yoga in their chart do not have Sarpa yoga. This combination of planet is very rare and
one astrologer sees only few charts in his whole life time.
So, if you do not have above combination in your chart. Better is to find any other reason for your
problems rather than blaming 'poor sarpa yoga' for all the problems :)

Reason Behind Sarpa Yoga EffectsTantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji came up with a possible reason which he has written
below.
Since this is Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji s own . People who disagree with this
can simply choose to ignore. Who agree, they can try to find some charts of 'Actual Sarpa yoga' and
share with us so that we can try to find an answer to our 'why'.
Quadrants are our efforts. Malefics usually destroy the houses. So due to this placement our efforts are
affected. In absense of our concrete efforts, our results will be subdued.
Lagna shows our personality and our existence. A malefic in Lagna will make a person cruel, short
tempered and fickle minded.
Fourth house shows our comforts, mother, nourishment. Malefic in 4th house will destroy the comforts,
nourishment.
Seventh house shows our desires, relationships. Malefic in seventh house will destroy our relationships
and desire to work.
Tenth house show our Karma our work in society. If there is malefic in 1oth house then Person's Karma
will be affected.
These four quadrants are four pillars of our material existence and enjoyment or we can say 'Quality of
Life'. If one pillar is destroyed then a building can survive. but if three out of four pillars are destroyed a
building will collapse. Again, here by building Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji mean
the 'Quality of Life'.

THE BENIFIT OF NAVGRAH PUJA AND HOMAM

The Vedic scriptures prescribe various pujas and Homam to eliminate the negative influence of the
planets and to improve
the benefic effects. Navgraha puja is considered to be the best way to come out of all barriers of life.

If a planet is not well placed in ones birth chart, puja and Homam may remove or reduce the negative
effects.

Graha shanti is desirable in case of severe Mangala dosha or sadesati. During the dasa or antardasa of a
planet if graha shanti homa is performed, one may experience positive results.

Anyone desiring improvement in any particular aspect of life, like profession or health etc., may consider
perform the Navgrah Shanti puja/homam.

Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji are providing an opportunity to his temple devotees

Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji is a medium between you & Shridasmahavidhya
shakti & maa kamakhya.
Meaning of Dosha:
In sanskrit, it literally means ill-effect. The ill-effect to a person can be in many ways. Through animate
things, such as father, brother, friend, tree (like a mis-understanding with friend). Through inanimate
things such as wood, sand etc. (like allergy to particular wood) Through five elements such as water,
earth (like flu due to water borne illness). In hindu sastra, one more type of ill-effect is defined. It is
called graha dosha (ill-effect due to planets). When we say dosha in astrology, it means graha dosha. The
ill-effect of the planet due to placement, nature of the planet in the horoscope.

Meaning of Dasa:
In a horoscope, each planet is given prominence (for a fixed number of years) to do its duty. This
prominence for a planet is called dasa of the planet. The period varies from one horoscope to another
and determined by the nakshatra and time of birth.

If your current dasa is Rahu, it is not necessary to do any parikarams unless there is a ill-effect by it

Hope this is clear to you.

**KENDRA ADHIPATYA DOSHASTHU BALAVAAN GURU SUKRAYOH,

MARAKATVEPI CHA THAYORMAARKA- STAANA SAMSTHITHAHA.

Guru (Jupiter), and Sukra (Veenus) are good-natured (Soumya) planets; the harm they do by having
Lordship of kendrams 4th , 7th, 10th houses is very strong. If those planets have lordships of

kendrams and are positioned in maaraka-sthaanams (houses which cause death = 2nd house, & 7th
houses), they cause death to the person; the harmful result they give is very strong.

**BUDHASTHADANU CHANDROPI BHAVETHA THADANUTHADWIDHAH,

NARANDHRASATHVADOST HU SURYA CHANDRA MASOBHAVETH.

The harmful effects caused by the lordship of kendrams 4th, 7th, & 10th houses is less in case of Budha
(Mercury) when compared to the harm done by Guru = Jupiter and Sukra = Veenus. The harmful effect
caused by Chandra (Moon) having lordship of kendrams, is less than the harm done by Budha (Mercury);
There is no harmful effect for Ravi = Sun and Chandra = Moon, by having =lordship of 8th house.
Kendradhipati dosha is applicable in Death period determination ONLY and not in other places as per
the original text that mentions this dosha - i.e. Jataka Chandrika (alias Laghu Parasari alias Udu daya
pradeepa)written by Venkateswara Dikshitar (Son of Yagnya Narayana) who lived in 9th or 10th century
AD.
Jataka Chandrika states - "Marakatwepi cha tayor maraka stana samthiti.... ... bhavettadanu tadvidha"
etc. Due to their marakatva (death inflicting effect) they cause death in their dasa antara especially if
placed in maraka houses such as 2nd or 7th. Therefore except while trying to locate the vimsottari dasaantara period which may cause death to the native we SHOULD NOT consider or use this concept.
Application of this unique concept (told with a specific purpose) everywhere may undermine the basic
intend of this tool itself.
The application of Kendradhipati dosha would for example - the 8th lord's dasa 7th lords antara (or vice
versa) can cause death or death like hazards (very bad period). Possibly we should not associate
Kendradhipati dosha with the general good/bad results of the dasa.
Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji Have mentioned karaka's on a few occasions
regarding Jyotish.
There are 3 types Naisargika or natural -shows everything that exists in creation. This is represented/owned by Brahma ,
since He is the author of all this creation. All 9 graha's are considered in this scheme.
Chara - are variable - there are 8 graha's ( Ketu is not included here) and are ruled by Vishnu. These
chara karaka's indicate who influences the native in this life. Visnu rules over sustenance, maintenance
and spiritual progress, these charakaraka point out these influences in one's chart.
Sthira - are fixed. There are 7 graha's in this category and are ruled by Siva. These fixed karka's show the
destruction of the body , hence Rudra plays a key role. Rahu and Ketu are not part of the 7, as they do

not have physical bodes (e.g. moon or Chandra is of material origin, size, weight, mass, etc). These
sthira-karaka assists the Jyotisha in determining the death of the body.

So, this karaka is the significator, indicator or one who causes an event , situation or condition. We have
natural, variable and fixed as mentioned above. The Charakaraka are of great import to the sadhu as it
points out some key influences:
Atmakaraka - the SELF
Amatyakaraka - the Advisors ( guru's and the like)
Bhratrikaraka - Siblings
Matrikaraka - Mother or Mother figure ( nurturing)
Pitrikaraka - Father and/or Father figure ( a boss, leader, etc)
Putrakaraka - Children or Child like ( followers, sisya)
Jnatikaraka - Rivals
Darakarka - Spouse or the like ( married to or devoted to)

What is of interest is the Atmakarka for the sadhu - as this also assists one on determining the
Ishtadevata from a Jyotish perspective. If one wishes to read this information please consider the
following
Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji have discussed the notion of Jyotish and one's
Ishtadevata. What is the connection? How can one tell of ones Ishta from Jyotish?
Lets take a look at this
Ishtadevata at its root is Isa or Lord, master and Is, to rule.. We see this in Isvara, The Great One. This is
a quality of saguna Brahmam or manifest Brahman. So, one's Ishtadevata is ones chosen Lord.
From a Jyotish (science of light, the eyes of the Ved) what information points to understanding ones
Ishtadevata?
WE look to the authorities, the Bhagavad-Gita for direction, then we look to the seers of the ved for
their guidance on this. That said lets look at this in two parts below:

Part A

Bhagavad-Gita
In Chapt 10 Arjuna asks
Please tell me in detail of Your divine powers by which You pervade all these worlds and abide in them.
Krsna responds, and sets the stage:
I am the Self, O Gudakesa, seated in the hearts of all creatures. I am the beginning, the middle and the
end of all beings.
He calls Arjuna Gudakesa, which means one who has conquered the darkness of sleep. This indicates
Arjuna's wakeful and attentive state, that of a sisya, asking the Guru meaningful questions, that will
allow the flow of knowledge to come out.
Krsna, defines a few other key/divine attributes of HimSelf , then says:
Of the Adityas I am Visnu, of lights I am the radiant sun ( or ravi) , I am Marici of the Maruts, and among
the stars I am the moon ( or sasi).
Now, forward to Chapt 15
Krsna explains the following:
gam avisya ca bhutani
dharayamy aham ojasa
pusnami causadhih sarvah
somo bhutva rasatmakah
I enter into each planet, and by My energy they stay in orbit. I become the moon (or soma) and thereby
supply the juice of life to all vegetables.
As we look to Chapt 10 and 15, it ponts out that the Univeral Purusha, Krsna, enters into the planets (
graha's) and He is seated in the hearts of all beings. The connection of Him, us and the graha's is
established.
Part B
Seers of the Ved
One of the greatest risi's of the Ved is muni Parashara. In his works establishes various expressions of
the Lord/Univeral Self of Purusha for each graha. It's recognized that each graha administers HIS will to
dispense the results of our works ( karma). Another great Jyotish risi and a student of Ved Vyasa, the son
of muni Parashara, is risi Jaimini. ( You can see the liniage is connected). They look at the graha-devatas
and extend the concept of the 'owners'

Let me outline both Parashara's and Jaimini's guidence for each graha. For reference if one is interested,
look to Brhad Parashara Hora Sastra, for Parashara, and to the Upadesa Sutras of Maharishi Jaimini. This
work is beyond brilliant, yet is not entry level reading.
Graha/Planet ----------Ruler per Parashara ----------Ruler per Jaimini
Sun ---------------------------------Agni------------------------------ Siva
Moon -------------------------------Jala------------------------------ Gauri
Mars----------------------------- Skanda-------------------------- Skanda
Mercury --------------------------Visnu----------------------------- Visnu
Jupiter----------------------------- Indra ------------------------------Sambsiva
Venus -----------------------------Sasi---------------------------- Lakshmi
Saturn --------------------------Brahma----------------------------- Visnu
Rahu-------------------------------- - -----------------------------------Druga
Ketu--------------------------------- - ---------------------------------Ganapati

Lets stop here for now...the info above sets the stage for Part 2. If one post gets too long, one loses
interest, and the knowledge can become convoluted.

So, in part 2 let me outline the Visnu avataras that correspond to the graha's above. We can then
establish the connection to the Atmakaraka that points to ones Ishtadevata, and outline some of the
interesting dictums of one's Atmakaraka i.e. accoring to the shastra's what the indvidual native is to
'learn' in this human manifestation.

Jyotish and the Ishatadevata Part 1, and Jyotish- The Eyes Of The Ved lays the foundation for this
discussion on the Ishta, if you care to take a look at these posts.

Lets advance a few more ideas. We talk of the graha's also having the infusion of Vishnu's avatar's. Who
are they? They are listed below.

Also a bit more discussion on the Atmakaraka or AK, (we all have one on this planet) is due and how the
AK gives us an indication of what we're to learn or advance ourselves while here ( this will be the last
post or Jyotish and the Ishtadevata Part 3)

Part A
The avatar's of Visnu represented by the Graha's ( Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya)
Graha----------------- Avatara
Sun ( Surya)----------- Sri Ramachandra
Moon (Chandra)-------- Sri Krsna
Mars ( Mangala) -------- Sri Narasimha
Mercury (Buddha) -------Buddha ( Some call Sri Visnu)
Jupiter (Brihaspati) ------Sri Vamana
Venus (Sukra) ---------- Sri Parasurama
Saturn (Sani) ----------- Kurma
Rahu ------------------- Varaha
Ketu ------------------- Matsya
Ascendent (Lagna) ------Kalki

Part B
The Atmakaraka - atma or atman is the soul of the individual, and karaka is the significator ( some call
indicator)
There is a fundamental principle that needs to be estabished for this part of the conversation to take
place. That is, there's 3 types of karaka's or significators in Vedic astrology called the chara karakas.
The 3 types
Naiskargika or the natural/univerally applicable karaka - that applies to all of us. This is owned/ruled by
Brahma.
Chara ( or variable/temporary) karaka, and is specific youre chart for this particular manifestation or
time you are here. That suggests it changes with every new birth - that is correct.. Unless this is your last

birth and Moksha arises ( this is alo indicated in ones chart), your birth chart will be different for each
birth. The Charakaraka's are owned by Visnu.
Sthira ( or fixed) karaka's are owned by Siva.
These karaka's are different tools the Jyotisha can use when viewing ones chart ( like tools in a toolbox
that performed different functions).
For the Naiskargika Karaka, there is one for each graha, but lets not get complicated here. The one I
want to point out is the Naiskargika atmakaraka, or the natual atma (soul, SELF) significator is Surya, the
sun. This is true for all beings on this earth. The sun plays a key role in our lives and for the total planet.
If you recall in the first post, Jyotish the eyes of the ved, I pointed out the natural dasa periods for each
planet. This is the Naiskargika Dasa system that applies to all. When a dasa period comes to pass , then
that planet has influence over the native. So , for the Sun, 6th dasa period from 50- 70 years old, with a
20 year duration, influences ones life.

Now, what does the sun influence? The soul, truth, one's ego, father, and authority ( and all
permutations of this). There are other things ( career, change of tastes, etc but for now this will do).
As one enters this time, these things become more important. for me, I am in this time period ( some
call it an ashram or one of the 4 stopping points in life) and things of the SELF, truth, ego ( and loosing
it), father ( in my case the Supreme Father) etc are of greatest import. For others on this list, is this too
true for you? Again, one's chart will suggest how strong, weak, committed to these items one will be.
Charakaraka - this is the temporary condition of this (your) birth - There are 8 charakaraka's ( oh, and by
the way there's 9 Naiskargika Karakas).

Again, avoiding complexity here, we are just concerned with the chara atmakaraka. Which one is it?
Look to ones chart and the graha that has the highest degree of longitude in a sign. Say, Mercury is 29
degrees in Cancer, and all other planets no matter which sign, have a lesser degree of advancement,
then Mercury is the chara atmakaraka. The others are subordinate to the atmakarak. All have a name
and an order to them.
Why such importance to this atmakaraka (AK)? Its due to the prevalence it has to ones spiritual
development. The AK is considered the king - he agrees with, sustains or abstains the activities of all the
other graha's. The atmakaraka forms important unions ( yogas) with other planets , even raj-yogas or
royal/kingly yogas , that are beneficial to the native. The atmakaraka can even trump negative influences
in ones chart. And the opposite is true.

Ones chart can so great favor, yet if the atmakaraka is blemished, the full potential of the chart (and the
native) is not realized like that the atmakaraka is very important ( you will not find this in western
astrology). And because he is the king, he points to the Ishta devata in ones chart.

One's Ishtadevata is found in another divisional chart other then the birth chart ( some call rasi chart or
D1) . If you recall from the other posts on Jyotish, there are 16 divisional charts ( or vargas, divisions).
The Navamsa or 9th divisional chart is also called the Dharmamsa chart ( or Dharma + amsa or division) and we have been introduced to this Dharma ( that which upholds) on many other posts on this matter.
What more can matter then ones dharma? And one can look to , to assist with ones dharma, the
atmakaraka and the Ishtadevata.

So we look at this Dharmamsa chart, and find the Atmakaraka ( in our example, Mercury) and we count
12 signs from it. The graha that resides in the 12th house from the Atmakaraka is the Ishtadevata. We
then can look to the avatar's of Vishnu ( from the list above) and/or to the divinities that Jaimini or
Parashara have pointed out in the Jyotish and Ishatadevata Part post. If the sun were in the 12th, then
Siva or Ramachandra is indicated as one's Ishta. If mars is there, then we can see Skanda , or Narasimha.
Like that, we see the Ishta.

Now, why the 12th house? Many see this as unfavorable bhava. The 12th is noted for punishment, loss,
bed pleasure, sleep, donation, and expenditure. Yet for the sadu , its a spiritual house for a 'loss of ego',
and meditation (owned by Ketu) i.e. the house of self undoing - destruction of the ego. What remains
with this destruction? The SELF shines forth. It is a Moksha house ( if you recall the 4th, 8th and 12th are
moksha bhava's or houses). Ketu is the graha of Moksha . Ketu is shown as one with no head i.e. no ego.
He is also the karaka of the 12th house. When there is a relationship with the sun ( that natural
atamakaraka) + Jupiter ( the Guru) and Ketu, you will see natives on the spiritual path.
So, you ask, what if there are no planets in the 12th house from the atmakaraka? Then we look at the
strongest aspect of a graha on the 12th house. That is, graha dristi ( or the graha looking at 12th house)
or rasi dristi , a graha in another house looking from that house to the 12th house.

There are rules here that we needn't get into and you can find in a Vedic astrology book if you have
interest.

Last is Sthira karaka's and they are owned by Siva. Siva presides over completion, destruction, death.
These karaka's are accessed to show the destruction of the body ( and bodies).

This is just the tip of the ice berg as they say What happens during the dasa period of the Chara
Atmakaraka? What of the Atmakaraka in a debilitated state? What of the atmakaraka that is in a very
high degree in a sign like 29.888 degrees? What does that indicate? Or its going backwards (
regression)?
This is shown in one's chart and all this plays a role for the sadhu.
Let me start with a great invocation for purity and to insure the ego ( my ego) is left behind with this
post this information comes from others that I have had the good fortune to learn from. Tantra Siddha
Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji stand on their shoulders as a beneficiary of their knowledge that is
being passed on for the good of those that read this.

Om apavitrah pavitrovaa sarvauvasthaam gatopivaa

yahsmareth pundareekoaksham sabahynabhyantarah
shuchih
This says, if one is pure or impure, whether all places are permeated by purity or impurity, whoever
opens himself/herself up to the lotus-eyed Lord ( some say the expanded vision of unbounded
awareness, the Infinite Purusha) one gains inner and outer purity.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Namaste Satyakama's ( lovers of the Truth),
This is the final installation on the discussion around the Ishta and the Atmakaraka.

This post is specifically about the Atmakaraka (AK), the Atman or Soul/Self some call jiva, and karaka, or
indicator or signifcator. This Atmakarka is found in everyones birth chart and is discussed in other
earlier Jyotish Ishtadevata posts.
The point here is we come back to this loka ( Bhu Loka) to this earth based upon our past actions,
desires, and vasanas that we collect. The principle in Jyotish is 3 fold:From ones chart, a qualified
Jyotisha can see how long one may stay around this plane of existence after death ( that is, the mindstuff and the soul) before going to the next incarnation;
The chart will indicate which plane of existence the Atman resided in e.g.before its return back to
earth. That is did one spend time in Brahma-loka, with the Gandharvas, Apsaras, or perhaps naraka loka,
etc.
The chart ( kundali or rasi) for this life will indicate the Atmakaraka. Recall Atmakaraka (AK) is the ~king
of the chart. Each graha too, has a name and is subordinate or supports the Atmakaraka and plays a role

i.e. Amatya Karaka, Matri Karaka, etc. There are 8 chara karakas, where the Atmakaraka is indicated by
the graha with the highest degree in a sign ( say Mercury, 29.5 degrees, in Aries, and all the grahas in
any sign are in a lower position, say Saturn, 21degrees Taurus).
Now, what does the Atmakarakaka indicate? And what's indicated if placed in a particular house (
bhava)? Lets outline the 8 Chara-karakas and what they indicate for the native for this incarnation.
With the following graha's as the Atmakaraka, the native needs to:
Sun (Surya) learn humility and to overcome pride and self importance.
Moon ( Chandra, Soma) learn the meaning of compassion, and the concern for others, as part of
his/her spiritual progress.
Mars (Mangala) learn the meaning of ahimsa ( non-violence) as part of ones spiritual progress.
Mercury (Buddha) - learn to speak with truth (sat-vak), speak to uplift others and meaningful speech.
Jupiter (Brihaspati or Guru) assume the role of protector. Learn to respect their own gurus/teachers
and the traditions. Key is responsibility.
Venus ( Sukra)- Control the physical passions of excess.
Saturn (Sani) eliminate giving pain, grief or sorrow to others (compassion)
Rahu with Rahu , one may be inflicted with deception, or being cheated , yet the native cannot inflict
deception to others. Being straight forward in personal dealings and forthright.
Ketu Ketu does not become an Atmakaraka He is the significator of Moksha, and is beyond the
realm of these actions above.
Now, if the Atmakaraka is found in the following bhavas ( houses) the following is indicated, possible,
or the potential is there:
1st House Nobility , high attainments. The Lagna is a most auspicious house, the home of satya-pitha.
The Sun ( Surya) is the karaka of the 1st house, and is a most auspicious Atmakaraka too. One with a Sun
atmakaraka, the material world may be a challenge as one is pointed to the true purpose of ones
incarnation, Self Realization, pending other conditions in the rasi chart.
2nd house renunciation, spiritual pursuits are paramount. Lets say Saturn is there; is the karkaka of
the 12th (moksha) house and indicates the path of the sadhu, sanyas, or great charity. With the
influence of Venus and Ketu , one would be in yogic practices, or tapasya will be taken up.
3rd house one may have many high social contacts ( government, business, etc). This position of the
Atmakaraka has the potential of producing success, wealth and popularity.

4th house This house works with the 10th from the AKs position, or the Lagna, and suggests the
natives work/career/actions as an essential contribution to ones dharma in this life. That is,
performance actions that support his/her dharma for this incarnation.
5th house indicates a very truthful person, and follows ones dharma judiciously. This also produces
the potential/possibility for sadhana, to meet and serve spiritualists/sadhus/gurus. Pending the strength
of the Sun ( that natural karaka of the atman), blessings from guru, God, father and great people of the
earth is possible.
6th house - challenges exist for the native from past actions. One may feel the constant pinch from Sani
and not know why. That is, grief, minimum fruit from their actions, etc.
7th house one will enjoy a good spousal relationship , as the 7th is owns relationships. This produces a
compassionate individual with good intent.
8th house results are similar to the 6th house position. The native may confront issues which are hard
to solve or that are not easily traced back to the source point, due to coming from past actions one may
not remember. It will be key to keep a truthful behavior during this life.
9th house all blessings can exist for the native with the Atma in the 9th house of bhagya (fortune).
Yet this fortune is one of spiritual pursuits. If the sun influences the AK here, a raj-yoga is produced. If
Brihaspiti (Jupiter) is strong in its influence, the potential of producing a guru is possible. What is
interesting, the fortunes discussed, the native is not much for material possessions as an attachment.
He/she is not compelled to collect and amass items, as there is little charm or hold on him/her.
10th house happiness from home, family has been earned. Assets of property accrue. The strength
and delivery of this promise or potential is indicated by Chandra ( karaka for mother, home, etc).
11th house the house of courage and capability. The natives potential for intelligence, firmness (
resolved to accomplish the task at hand), and problem solving is indicated. If Mars ( courage karaka) is
strong, a raj-yoga is indicated , and adds more weight to the natives qualities of this AK position.
12th house The native is blessed by Laksmi-devi ( or punya, merit for fortunes). If others influence this
position ( Brihaspiti, Sukra and/or Buddha), the blessings of Sri Saraswati, then knowledge is bestowed
upon the native.
We have now covered the part of the Atmakaraka for ones birth chart. From my parampara ( or
tradition) its the first responsibility of the Jyotisha to point these items out to the native, to help one
along the path. Perhaps in some way I have helped a few of you that have read/pondered and
considered this information.
When a Jyotish uses the Naisargika or natural karaka system, he/she looks at each graha and its
indication/signification it plays in one's chart:

dance , music, song, e.g. feeding the senses: Karaka of the 7th house, 4th house, 12 house . The SE

imprisonment, renunciation, one-pointedness. Karaka of the 8th, 6th, 5th and 12th and the West
direction.
Rahu: accidents, occult knowledge, life in a foreign land, poisons, skin dis-eases, arguments, darkness.
Karaka of the 7th, 9th and 6th houses. Owns the SW direction.
Ketu:- occult knowledge, moksha, detachment, fastidious, imprisonment. Karka of the 12th, 9th and 8th
houses. Owns the NW direction.

Graha Dosha's and Mantra Remedies

(Authored by Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji and translated in English
by Tantra Siddha Maha Yogi Shastrishree Dr.Rupnathji)

Modern days, people suffer and undergo so many problem, difficulty,

sorrow etc. The astrology tries to remove the same. The astrologer
with such great responsibility on his shoulders reads the horoscope
by examining and analyzing the 12 Rasi's on minute degree basis and
arrives at graha doshas responsible for creation of all the problems

in life. Then he suggests remedial measures according to the strength

of Doshas.

The remedial measures normally comprises of worship of gods, goddess,

recitation of mantras, slokas, prayers, poojas, performing yagnas,
doing charities etc, Most of the remedial measures like slokas,
poojas, mantras etc are the gifts of saints, sages and mahapurush for
the welfare of the humanity.

In the light of the above, the main purpose of this article is to

throw light on how the remedial mantras, slokas are getting power and
how do they derive strength

Graha Doshas:
Graha dosha arise because of our sinful actions (Pap Karya). The
sinful actions can be distinguished as under:

Mind and Speech

It refers to those actions like lying, back-biting, talking ill about
other, splitting the couples, hurting the mother and father by
talking bad words, bad thoughts in mind, abusing the god, abusing the
saints and sages, talking ill about women etc.,

Physical
It refers harming those living beings, eating non-veg, adultery,

drinks, rape, theft, burglary, robbery, harming temple or temple

property, murder, grabbing of other's thing etc.,

Barring a few, the ill effects of all other sinful actions can be
rectified and overcome by undergoing or doing remedial measures as
suggested by astrologers. But the important point is one shouldn't
commit sinful actions just because suitable remedial measures are
there to rectify and overcome the ill effect.

Mantra Meaning
The power of mantra japa or recitation and how one can get good life
by doing mantra japa has been dealt in `UPASANA' section of Vedas.

"MANTRAM TRAYATE ITHI MANTRAH"

The meaning of the above iswhat saves or protects one when it is

recited with shraddha and bakthi, that is the thing, which is called
as `Mantra'. Therefore, it is evident that recitation of the powerful
and divine mantras daily and regularly will help, save and protects
us from all kinds of problems.

Each word in the mantra has its special and individual power because
all mantras are simply forms of sound. Therefore only correct
pronunciation is essential to get the full power of the mantras.

Like when a small seed when sown in a fertile ground and irrigated
with water grows and becomes a big tree, every word of mantra also
gets sown in our heart, irrigated with our bakthi and shraddha grows
in to big tree to protect us. Moreover it is also essential to keep
confidence and belief in the daily mantra japa / recitation since the
results are directly in relation with our confidence and belief
levels in the mantra.

These remedial mantras are able to give comfort and protection while
living and happiness and moksha after death. These, not only relieves
us from our past sinful acts, but also gives strength and will power
not to indulge in such sinful action in future.

Mantra - Types

Many of the mantra recitation or japa can be started on our own after
the worship of god. But japa or recital of mantras like Gayatri,
Astatsharam, Panchasharam, Beejasharam requires upadesha (Initiation)
by Guru, Acharya, father, religious sages, saints, heads of mutts,
divine scholars etc.,

All mantra recitation should be undertaken only in the morning after

taking bath.

Slokas Imbibed with Mantra Sakthi / Power

Besides the mantras, there are certain powerful slokas (thuthi in

tamil) which are endowed with mantra power. They are

Sri Vishnu Sahasranama

Aditya Hridayam
Sri Hanuman Chalisa
Kanda Shasti Kavacham
Kandar Anubhuti
Navagraha slokas (Sri Vyasa Maharishi)
Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Karavalambam
Kanagadhara Stotram (Sri Adi Sankaracharya)
Sri Seetharama Pattabhisheka Stotram (Sri Anjeneyar)

These stotram's can be recited at any time and at all times. There is
no need for upadesam from guru etc., One can start reciting any of
the above stotram after worshipping the God.

What are the major problems of today?

Absence of unity in the family
Diseases (New and Rare)
Employment, Business, Occupation (Disappointment)
Debt Burden
Children

To eliminate all these problems, worries and difficulties and to

bring happiness and peace in family, our rishis and mahapurush has
bestowed their divine benevolence on us by presenting to us mantras
and mantra slokas. All our present day problems and difficulties are
due to the fact that we forgotten all these gifts from our
forefathers.

How do Mantras derive Power

The first mantra also called as `Pranavam' is "OHM" which came from
God. This pranava mantra gave birth to `Sri Gayatri'. All other
mantras came from this gayatri mantra only and hence gayatri mantra
is denoted as `mother of mantras'.

Once Surya, the sun god, has took birth as son of Kashyap Rishi and
has been entrusted with the responsibility of giving light
(brightness) to entire world. (28 = (2 x7+14)]. But the Lord of
light, Surya himself gets lighting power from Sri Gayatri. The centre
of the surya mandala is always echoed with sound waves of sri gayatri
mantra. Hence the mantra is known as `SUPREME' and `POWERFUL'

All other mantras derive strength and power from gayatri. How is it
possible to derive strength from gayatri when mantras are different?
It is because our rishi's, mahapurush, saints and sages has done
extensive and deep penance worshipping mother gayatri by reciting
gayatri mantra. By virtue of their penance, they derived all other
mantras and slokas from mother gayatri. We cannot do such hard

penance like rishi and mahapurush to attain mantra siddhi. That is

why they have blessed us with mantras and slokas endowed with their
mantra power and siddhi's.

Among other mantras, Astasharam i.e, Ohm Namo Narayanaya and

Panchasharam i.e., Ohm Namasivaya are considered to be powerful. It
is believed that sri Mahavishnu himself has thought this mantra to
human beings at Bhadri Ashram, located on the banks of alakanandha
river. In the same way, the panchashara mantra has took birth in
kailash when lord shiva is in yoga nishta.

Since these mantras and slokas have been endowed with such divine
powers, they help one get rid of their Graha dosha arising as a
result of sinful actions in the past birth and difficulties faced due
to such graha dosha in the present life.

Can ladies recite mantras?

It is stated that Ladies are not advised to recite gayatri mantra.
They can recite Astashara and Panchashara mantras by leaving out the
beej or pranava `Ohm'.

It should not be taken as that the women are inferior to man. The
main reason is due to special problem the women are having, their
mental and physical strength will be gradually going down as the age
goes up. This is the reason for their getting old quicker than their

male counterparts and also host of illness in the body. The

recitation of mantras like Pranavam or Gayatri gives and increases
enormous atomic energy in the body and it is believed that it will be
difficult for the women to bear such power. Hence it is kept as a
rule.

Therefore, it is urged that everybody make use of these mantras and

slokas by having belief and confidence in their powerfulness and make
their life happy and peaceful.
