ConditionsforAdmission:

1.

(a)Candidates for admission to the first semester of the 8 semester B.Tech


Degreeprogrammeshouldberequiredtohavepassed:
TheHigherSecondaryExaminationofthe
(10+2)curriculum
(AcademicStream)prescribedbytheGovernmentof
TamilNaduorany
otherexaminationequivalenttheretowithminimumof45%marks(amere
passforOBCandSC/STcandidates)inaggregateofsubjectsMathematics,
Physics and any one of the following optional subjects: Chemistry /
Biotechnology/ Computer Science / Biology (Botany & Zoology) or an
Examination of any University or Authority recognized by the Executive
CouncilofthePondicherryUniversityasequivalentthereto.
(2) ForLateralentryintothirdsemesteroftheeightsemesterB.Techprogramme
:
Theminimumqualificationforadmissionisapassinthreeyeardiplomaor
four year sandwich diploma course in engineering / technology with a
minimumof60%marks(50%marksforOBCandamerepassforSC/ST
candidates)inaggregateinthesubjectscoveredfrom3 rdtofinalsemesterora
passinanyB.Sc.coursewithmathematicsasoneofthesubjectsofstudywith
aminimumof60%marks(50%marksforOBCandamerepassforSC/ST
candidates)inaggregateinmainandancillarysubjectsexcludinglanguage
subjects.Thelistofdiplomaprogramsapprovedforadmissionforeachofthe
degreeprogramsisgiveninAnnexureA.

DurationofProgramme:
TheBachelorofTechnologydegreeprogrammeshall

EligibilityfortheawardofDegree:
No candidate shall be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of
Technology,unlesshe/shehasundergonethecourseforaperiodof8semesters
(4academicyears)/6semesters(3academicyearsforLateralEntrycandidates)
inthefacultyofEngineeringandhaspassedtheprescribedexaminationsinall
thesemesters.

SubjectsofStudy:
Thesubjectsofstudyshallincludetheoryandpracticalcoursesasgiveninthe
curriculumandshallbeinaccordancewiththeprescribedsyllabus.Thesubjects
ofstudyforthefirsttwosemestersshallbecommonforallbranchesofstudy.

7.

Examinations:
The theory and practical examinations shall comprise continuous assessment
throughout the semester in all subjects as well as university examinations
conductedbyPondicherryUniversityattheendofthesemester(November/
DecemberorApril/May).
(a) Theory courses for which there is a written paper of 75 marks in the
universityexamination.
TheInternalAssessmentmarksof25hastobedistributedas10markseachfor
twoclasstestsand5marksforclassattendanceintheparticularsubject.The
distributionofmarksforattendanceisasfollows.

Practicalcoursesforwhichthereisauniversitypracticalexaminationof50

Theinternalassessmentmarksof50hastobedistributedas20marksforthe
periodicpracticalworksandrecordssubmittedthereof,15marksforaninternal
practicalexamination,5marksforaninternalvivavoce,and10marksforclass
attendanceintheparticularsubject.Thedistributionofmarksisasgivenbelow.

RequirementforappearingforUniversityExamination:
Acandidateshallbepermittedtoappearforuniversityexaminationsattheend
ofanysemesteronlyif:
(i)He/Shesecuresnotlessthan75%overallattendancearrivedatbytaking
intoaccountthetotalnumberofperiodsinallsubjectsputtogetherofferedby
theinstitutionforthesemesterunderconsideration.
(Candidateswhosecureoverallattendancegreaterthan
60%andlessthan75%havetopayacondonationfeeasprescribedby
Universityalongwithamedicalcertificateobtainedfromamedicalofficer
notbelowtherankofAsst.Director)
(ii)He/Sheearnsaprogresscertificate
institutionforhavingsatisfactorilycompletedthe
subjectspertainingtothatsemester.

9.

Procedureforcompletingthecourse:
Acandidatecanjointhecourseofstudyofanysemesteronlyatthetimeofits
normalcommencementandonlyifhe/shehassatisfiedthecourserequirements
for the previous semester and further has registered for the university
examinationsoftheprevioussemesterinallthesubjectsaswellasallarrear
subjectsifany.
However,theentirecourseshouldbecompletedwithin14consecutivesemesters(12

consecutivesemestersforstudentsadmittedunderlateralentry).
10.

PassingMinimum:
(i)Acandidateshallbedeclaredtohavepassedtheexaminationinasubjectof
study only if he/she secures not less than 50% of the total marks (Internal
AssessmentplusUniversityexaminationmarks)andnotlessthan40%ofthe
marksinUniversityexamination.
(2) AcandidatewhohasbeendeclaredFailedinaparticularsubjectmay
reappear for that subject during the subsequent semesters and secure a pass.
However, there is a provision for revaluation of failed or passed subjects
providedhe/shefulfillsthefollowingnormsforrevaluation.
(1) Applicationsforrevaluationshouldbefiledwithin4weeksfromthedate
of declaration of results or 15 days from the date of receipt of marks card
whicheverisearlier.
(2)

Thecandidateshouldhaveattendedallthecollegeexaminationsaswellas
universityexaminations.

(3)

Ifacandidatehasfailedinmorethantwopapersinthecurrentuniversity
examination,his/herrepresentationforrevaluationwillnotbeconsidered.

Therequestforrevaluationmustbemadeintheformatprescribedduly
recommended
bytheHeadoftheInstitutionalongwiththe
revaluationfeeprescribedbytheUniversity.
The internal assessment marksobtainedby
thecandidateshallbeconsidered
only inthe firstattempt fortheorysubjects
alone.Forthesubsequentattempts,
Universityexaminationmarkswillbemadeuptothetotalmarks.FurthertheUniversity
examinationmarksobtainedinthelatestattemptshallalone
remain validintotal
suppressionoftheUniversityexaminationmarksobtained
bythe candidatein
earlierattempts.

Theassessmentofacoursewillbedoneonabsolutemarksbasis.However,for
the purpose of reporting the performance of a candidate, letter grades, each
carryingcertainpoints,willbeawardedaspertherangeoftotalmarks(outof
100)obtainedbythecandidate,asdetailedbelow:

PointAverage(CGPA)ofallenrolledsubjectsfromfirstsemesteronwards.
(d)GPAistheratioofsumoftheproductsofthenumberofcredits(C)of
courses registered and the corresponding grades points (GP) scored in those
courses,takenforallthecoursesandsumofthenumberofcreditsofallthe
courses

Acandidatewhosatisfiesthecourserequirementsforallsemestersand
who passes all the examinations prescribed for all the eight semesters (six
semestersforlateralentrycandidates)withinamaximumperiodof7years(6
yearsforlateralentrycandidates)reckonedfromthecommencementofthefirst
semestertowhichthecandidatewasadmittedshallbedeclaredtohavequalified
fortheawardofdegree.
(ii)Acandidatewhoqualifiesfortheawardofthedegreepassinginallsubjects
pertainingtosemesters3to8inhis/herfirstappearancewithin6consecutive
semesters(3academicyears)andinadditionsecuresaCGPAof8.50and
aboveforthesemesters3to8shallbedeclaredtohavepassedtheexamination
inFIRSTCLASSwithDISTINCTION.
(iii)Acandidatewhoqualifiesfortheawardofthedegreebypassinginall
subjectsrelatingtosemesters3to8withinamaximumperiodofeightsemesters
after his/her commencement of study in the third semester and in addition
securesCGPAnotlessthan6.5shalldeclaredtohavepassedtheexaminationin
FIRSTCLASS.

(iv)Allothercandidateswhoqualifyfortheawardofdegreeshallbedeclared

13.

Provisionforwithdrawal:
Acandidatemay,forvalidreasons,andontherecommendationoftheHeadof
theInstitutionbegrantedpermissionbytheUniversitytowithdrawfromwriting
theentiresemesterexaminationasoneUnit.Thewithdrawalapplicationshallbe
valid only if it is made earlier than the commencement of the last theory
examination pertaining to that semester. Withdrawal shall be permitted only
onceduringtheentirecourse.Otherconditionsbeingsatisfactory,candidates
whowithdrawarealsoeligibletobeawardedDISTINCTIONwhereastheyare
noteligibletobeawardedarank.

14.

DiscontinuationofCourse:
Ifacandidatewishestotemporarilydiscontinuethecourseforvalidreasons,
he/sheshallapplythroughtheHeadoftheInstitutioninadvanceandobtaina
writtenorderfromtheUniversitypermittingdiscontinuance.Acandidateafter
temporarydiscontinuancemayrejointhecourseonlyatthe
commencementof
thesemesterat which he/shediscontinued,provided
he/shepays
the prescribedfees to the
University.Thetotalperiodof
completionof
the coursereckoned from the
commencementofthefirst
semestertowhichthecandidatewasadmittedshallnotinanycaseexceed7
years,includingoftheperiodofdiscontinuance.

RevisionofRegulationsandCurriculum:
TheUniversitymayfromtimetotimerevise,amendorchangetheregulationsof
curriculumandsyllabusasandwhenfoundnecessary.
