notthekindoflongconthat'salengthyattempttotrickpeopleintogivinguptheirmoneyit
wasthekingoflongcon(vention)whereinyouplaythesamegame,withthesameGMand
players,forseveralsessionsinarow.

AnyerrorsorinaccuraciesinwhatfollowsareminealoneandnotthefaultoftheGMorother
players.

IplayedinDragonknights!(*),aFateCorebasedgamewithseveraltwists.

SettingandCharacters

WebeganonThursdaynightwithsettingandcharactercreation.TheGM,Travis,explained
thatintheworldofDragonknights!,dragonsandhumanbondtogetherintothetitularcreature.
Theworld,knownasIndgard,ismadeupoffivesovereigntiesruledbyaSteward'scouncil.
Eachsovereigntysetsupfortsthatarecommandedby(takesbreath)

TheGloriousOrderofDistinguishedKnightsDragonbonded!

TravisthenhadusrollonseveraltablesthatcleverlyusedtheFatedicetorandomizethe
setup.Basically:roll1dFthreetimestoworkyourwayfromamaintheme,toasubtheme,to
asubsubtheme.Thenroll2dFandrefertothecorrespondingrowofthetabletoanswerthe
questionsitasksyouaboutthecampaignsetup.AsaveteranGygaxianD&Der,Ienjoyed
rollingonthesetablesbecauseitremindedmeofrandomlygeneratingmagicitemsorpotion
miscibility.

Basedontherandomrolls,thequestionsweaskedourselves,andtheanswerswegave,we
collectivelydeterminedthefollowingaboutoursetting.

Ourcliffsidefortlacksawatersupply.That'sapressingconcernweneedtoaddress.
Wehavenomapsofthearea,which(belowthecliffs)isamarshymess.
ThechiefcartographerOmechasaskedustogoonaerialreconnaissance
missionstoscoutthingsout.
Twocaptainsareatthefortwithus:
CaptainValexofthedraconiccountermeasuresunit,whoadmiresus.
CaptainZeloofthearbalesters,whodespisesus.
Anarbalestisacrossbow,especiallyofmedievaltimes.

 Intheswamplivemanyalligators,whichthedragonsfeedupon.Inthenearby
mountainslivemanymountaingoats,whicharealsoafoodsource.
However,aboveeverythinglivetheCloudwhales,whichalsopreyuponthemountain
goatsandthuscompetewiththedragonsforfood.
OneofTheSpentlivesnearby.ThisisthedragonGorgorog,avenomous
whisperdrakewhousedhisUltimateBreathtocreateacloudofpoisongasthatslew
anentireenemyarmy.Unfortunatelythegasthenlingeredandhassincebecomea
regionwherenothingcanlive.
TheSpentreferstoadragonthathasuseditsUltimateBreathandthuscannot
useitsbreathweaponeveragain.TheSpentarebothfearedandpitied.
Thestewardofoursovereignty,Pulfric,brandedGorgorogasawarcriminaland
banishedhim(andus?)tothefarofffort.
Theremainsofthelargestdragonevenknownlieatthebaseofthecliffonwhich
webuiltourfort.ThiswasSarpatia,aspottedgreatfisher,whodied50yearsago.She
wasbetrayedbyherknight,Khatsu.

Withalloftheaboveestablishedastrue,therewasnoshortageofadventurehooks.In
additionto(takesbreath)TheGloriousOrderofDistinguishedKnightsDragonbonded!
(exhales)asacampaignAspect,weestablishedtwootherAspects:TraitorsinOurMidsts
andHonorBesmirched.

Wethenturnedtocharactercreation.AlthoughIhavemyowncharactersheet,Ionlyhave
basicnotesandvaguerecollectionsoftheotherplayers'characters.

Fraebogwasafrilledmountainking,oneofthelargesttypesofdragons.Shehadan
impressiveEminencescoreandtheabilitytooverawepeople(ordragons).Herbreathwas
lightning.Ingamemechanicalterms,Fraebogwasthebruiserofthedragons.Asanice
contrast,FraebogbondedwithWinglaf,manifestlytheleastphysicallytalentedofthehumans.


Alskwasareticulatedrazorwing,asmalldragonthat'shighlymaneuverable.Shehadastunt
todrawonheralreadymaxedoutAthleticstomakecrazyacrobaticmoves,somethingthatfit
SambeadtheGloryhoundingFarmboyjustfine.PictureaTopGunpilotandyou'vegotthe
gistofit.

Kallistoraxwasalustrousnightfang,adragonthatcansensethingsotherscannot.Hewas
theidealistofthegroup,appropriatelybondedwithTruztheNobleMarshall.

TheplayersofthedragonsestablishedthatAlskandKallistoraxlookeduptoFraebog,whom
theyreferredtoastheGreatOne.

Theplayersofthehumanshadtochooseacastetobelongto.WinglafwasaScholar,skilled
inLore.SambeadwasaWarrior,skilledinRiding(asheneededtobetohandleAlsk).Truz
wasaSteward,skilledinStewardship,makinghimthedefactoleadertowhomWinglafand
Sambeaddeferred,justasAlskandKallistoraxdeferredtoFraebog.(Butnoticethatthelead
dragonandtheleadhumanwerenotbondedtogether.)

Inadditiontoitsroleplayinghooks,thehumancastesystemalsodefinedacharacter'sskills.
Eachcaste(Steward,Magistrate,Scholar,Smith,Warrior)containedatrioofskills.Youfirst
rankedyourcastes,andthatrankingdeterminedhowmanyskillpointsyoucouldassign.

Forexample,asaScholar,Winglafassigned+4Lore,+2Inquiry,and+0Notice(totalof6
skillpoints).However,Winglaf'sStewardcasterankingwashislowest,soheassigned+0
Eminence,+1Stewardship,and+1Will(totalof2skillpoints).

Settingandcharactergenerationtookabout2hoursofthefirst4hoursession.Wefeltwe
hadalocationripewithproblemstosolveaswellaswelldefinedcharacterswithstrong
interrelationshipswhichiswhatFatedeliversandwhyit'sagoodgamesystem.

SupplyProblems

Afterabreak,wereturnedtothegame.Ourimmediateproblemwastogetsuppliesupthe
clifffacetothefortlocation.CaptainZeloofthearbalesters,whodespisedus,established
himselfasajerkrightawayorderingusaroundandfindingfaultwitheveryproposed
solution.InfairnesstoZelo,manyofourproposedsolutionswereprettybad,and
outofcharacterIfeltlikethisportionofourgamewastheweakest.Webumbledaroundlike
KeystoneKopswithlittlesenseofgreaterpurpose.

EventuallywedecidedtohaulsomeswampwaterupthecliffusingCloudwhalebladdersto
storethewaterandaseriesofpulleystoliftthebladders.Wethenplannedtoboilthewaterto
makeitpotable.Butthismeantwewouldneedafuelsourcewhichgothandwavedawayin
theinterestsoftime.


Thoughwehadtemporarilysolvedthewaterproblem,wefacedamuchmoreimmediate
problemwhenthecloudcoverthickenedandapodofCloudwhalesarrivedandbeganhurling
lightningboltsatthecamp.

BeingDragonknights!,wetooktotheair.KallistoraxandTruzhidinthedarkcloudsandthen
struckoneofthetheCloudwhalesunawares,bearingittowardstheground.Alskand
SambeaddazzledtheCloudwhalesandgotonetochasethemtowardsthemountainpasses.
FraebogandWinglafbarreledintothecenteroftheCloudwhalepodwherethevulnerableand
immaturewhaleswerelocated.

TheendresultofthisfightwasthataCloudwhalecrashedintothecamp,somethingwhich
hadabsolutelynothingtodowiththefactthatKallistoraxhadrippedintoitandsentit
plummetingoutofthesky.AnotherCloudwhalegotwedgedintoanarrowmountainpassina
futileattempttocatchAlsk.AndtheremainderoftheCloudwhalepoddispersedafter
roughingupFraebogabit.

ThehungrydragonsbeganfeastinguponthedownedCloudwhales.Meanwhile,CaptainZelo
beratedthehumansforallowingthecamptobedamaged.Wepointedoutthatthedamage
mighthavebeenfargreateriftheCloudwhaleshadbeenallowedtohurllightningbolts
unmolested,butZelowasnotmollified.EventuallyFraebogcowedhimusingEminence,and
Truztoldhimoffinnouncertainterms.

Asthedragonsfinishedtheirmeals,GorgorogtheSpentvenomouswhisperdrakethat
lairedintheswampsslunkintothecampandaskedifanyfoodwasleft.Foraoncemighty
dragontobereducedtobeggingforscrapswasapitiablesight.WedirectedGorgorogtothe
CloudwhalethatwaswedgedintothemountainpassAlsk,arathersmalldragon,hadn't
eatenallofthatone.

ScoutingMission

Thenextdaywedecidedthatweneededalongertermsolutiontoourwaterproblem.In
addition,wewantedtoheedcartographerOmec'scalltoscouttheareaandmakemaps.So
wesetoutforthemountainswhereWinglafassuredeveryonethatawatersourcecouldbe
found:It'sAllThereintheAncientDwarvenCodex.Wehadtheideatobuildanaqueduct
tobringwatertothefort,althoughAlsk'splayerpointedoutthatanundergroundtunnelwould
bringthewateruptofortlevel,aslongasthatlevelwasatorbelowthelevelofthe
mountainouswatersource.

Kallistorax,withhisextrasenses,spottedtheAncientGatesofDuurHalla(**).Healso
discoveredthatthosegatescontainedlargequantitiesofmoonstoneliterally,fragmentsof
themoonL'azuliwhichhadbeenshatteredinagespast.Kallistoraxfeltacompulsiontohave

thesefragmentsforhishoard,sowithamightyheave(andmanyFatePoints)hetorethe
gatesasunder.

Sidenotetomentionthateachdragonhadahoard.Inadditiontothegoldandjewelsfoundin
everydragon'shoard,eachdragonalsohadaparticularitemitcollectedthatformedan
Aspect:fragmentsofL'azuliforKallistorax,mechanicaltoysforAlsk,andsilverdippeddried
flowersforFraebog.RestingonitshoardwashowadragonrecoveredfromStressand
Consequences,andaccumulatingitsparticularitemswasoneofadragon'sdrivingimpulses.

DespitethedestructionoftheAncientGatesofDuurHalla,weweresuccessfulinour
scoutingmission:wehadlocatedasourceoffreshwater.Weflewbacktocamptoinformthe
captains.CaptainValexandcartographerOmecvolunteeredtoleadsomemenunderground
tolocatethedwarvenspringswewouldpickthemupinafewdays.

AfterdroppingoffValex,Omec,etal.weheadedbacktothecliffs.Aswedrewnearthe
camp,aballistaboltthesizeofatelephonepolecamehurtlingtowardsAlsk.Sheeasily
avoidedit,butwesawtoahorrorthatCaptainZelohadsubornedthedraconic
countermeasures.Evenaswelooked,heorderedhismentoreloadandtofire.

Andthat'swhereweendedthefirstsession.

TheBattleoftheCliffsofTazeh

Whenwereturned(andyou,dearreader,don'thavetoexperiencethe20hoursofanxiety
thattheplayerssuffered),wepickedrightup:withCaptainZelo'smenreloadingand
preparingtofireonus,theDragonknights!,aswereturnedfromscouting.

Thisbattleseemedmuchmoredifficultthanitshouldhavebeen.Thegameygamerinme
wantedtousebettertactics,buteveryonewasdoinghisorherownthing,sowedidn't
coordinatewell.EventuallyAlsk/Sambeadmanagedtotakeoutaballista,whichsendoneof
itscrewspiralingoffthecliffonlytobechaseddownandsavedbyaguiltstrickenAlsk.

Kallistorax/TruzdecidedtoisolatethetraitorousCaptainZelousingKallistorax'sviscous
inflammablebreathtoburnacirclearoundhim.Evenalone,Zelowasapotentfighter,but
onceFraebogenteredthefraybackedupbymanyBoostsandAspectsfromeveryoneelse
itwasover.Tomakeapointthatshewasnoonetobetrifledwith(whichwould'vebeena
greatnameforanAspect),FraebogactuallydevouredthedefeatedZelo.

GMTravisexplainedthatintheworldofDragonknights!,dragonseatinghumansisrareand
onlydoneinthemostterribleofcircumstances.Isupposebeingbetrayedbyoneofthe
captains,whowassworntoourservice,countsasaterriblecircumstance.


Intheaftermathofthebattle,bothdragonsandhumansneededrest.Whilewewere
recovering,Truzinterviewedtheremainingmenandwomenofthecampuntilhefoundanew
persontoappointascaptainofthearbalesters:Yrsou.Shewasprettybadassinherown
right,butthisisthePCs'story,notYrsou'sstory,sowe'llmoveon.

Aspartofhisrecovery,KallistoraxrestedontheshardsofL'azuli.Hetoldusmoreofthetale:
themoonL'azuliwastheeggofamythicdragongod,whichhadaccretedmaterialaround
itselflikeapearlaroundagrainofsand.Inrecentyears,Sarpathia(whosebonesrestatthe
bottomofthecliff)wasforcedtodestroythemoonL'azulitoprotectIndgard(ourplanet)from
danger.

Kallistorax'splayertoldthisstoryalotbetterthanI'mtellingithere.

ReturntotheMountains

WiththesituationatthecampsortedoutandnewlypromotedCaptainYrsouincharge,we
flewonceagainintothemountains.WeneededtopickupValex,Omec,andtheirmen,and
hopetheyhaddiscoveredthedwarvensprings.

OnourwayintothemountainsweNoticedthemarkingsofanotherdragon.Theseturnedout
tobethemarkingsofasteelfootedhilldrake,aspeciesofdragonthancaneasilycarve
throughrock,eveningestit.

Atthispoint,Fraebog'splayerspentaFatePointtodeclarethatshehadaoldfriend,
Bendwin,whowasasteelfootedhilldrake.Wedidn'twanttoencroachintoBendwin'snewly
claimedterritoryunannounced,soFraebogbellowedforafewhourstodrawBendwin's
attention.

Bendwinshowedupandassertedhisclaiminnouncertainterms.Hewasinthesemountains
tolocatethelairandhoardofhisfather,Crucivor.AftersomenegotiationbetweenBendwin
andFraebog,weweregivenuntilthenextmoonrisetofindourmenandgetthemoutofthe
mountains.

IntoDuurHalla

HandwaviummadethedwarventunnelsofDuurHallalargeenoughtoaccommodate
dragons.(Youknowdwarves:theyliketobuildonagrandscale.)ThethreeDragonknights!
enteredtheHallsofDuurHallaandfollowedthescenttrailofthemintleavesthatOmec
chewed.However,aseriesofCompels,particularlyagainstthecharacters'Troubles,meant
thepartyfelltobickering.Ultimatelywewereforcedintothatmostdreadedofallroleplaying
gamesins:wesplittheparty.

Fraebog/Winglafcontinuedfollowingthemintscents,whileAlsk/Sambeadand
Kallistorax/Truztriedtoreestablishsomesenseofthelayoftheland.Thepartywoundup
reunitingjustafterastartlingdiscovery.

Thegiantdwarvenhallsgavewaytoanevenlargerarea,likesomemassivebeasthadtorn
itswaythroughtherock.WededucedthiswastheburrowingsofCrucivor,fatherofBendwin,
whomusthavebuilthislairbeneathDuurHalla.

Crucivor'stunnelsopenedintoatrulyenormousspace,thehollowinteriorofthemountain.
Fromourperchonacrumblyrockfaceoverlookingtheopening,wegazeddown,down,down
toseeagargantuandragon,fully150feetlong(compareFraebog's40footsize),curled
aroundsomething.

Asthedragonshiftedinuneasyslumber,wesawwhatitprotected:afaintlyglowingoblong
objecttheHeartofL'azuli.Crucivorhadclaimedtheremainsofthedragonmoonforhis
hoard.

Anddownonthefloorofthecavern,neartherestofCrucivor'svastpileofgoldandgems,we
spottedCaptainValex,cartographerOmec,andtherestofourmen.Theywerejustaboutto
violatethesanctityofadragonhoardandpossiblytryfortheHeartofL'azuliitself.

TheHeartofL'azuli

Wesprungintoaction.AllofthedragonsweredrawnbytheallureoftheHeart,especially
Kallistoraxwholustedafterit.Butwekeptourwitsaboutusasbestwecouldandquickly
cameupwithaplan.

Alsk/Sambeadglidedsilently(Stealth)downthecavern,carryinganotehastilyscribedby
Winglaf.("Don'ttouchthehoard,idiots."withtheword"idiots"crossedout.)Theyalso
carriedagutteringtorchtoattractOmec'sattentionwithoutmakinganysoundthatmight
wakeCrucivor.Theyfurthercarriedseveralropesthatwehopedtorigintoaharnesstoraise
upthenearly100menwhohaddescendedtheirownropesintothecavern.

TheotherDragonknights!remainedonoverwatchabovethefitfullysleepingCrucivor.

Sidenote:basedonpreviousinvestigation,itseemedthatOmecetal.fixedropestothe
crumblingrockface,climbeddowntothecavernfloorwhileagiantdragonsleptnearby,then
plannedtostealthatdragon'shoardincludingtheroomsizedL'azuli,theheartofthe
shatteredmoon,whichwasitselfpossiblyadragon'segg.Whateverelseyoucouldsayabout
thosemen,theywerebadassesofthehighestcaliber.Hencewetaggedthescenewiththe
AspectFoolsorHeroes?


AtthispointIdidsomethingmetagameythatIdon'tregret,exceptinsofarasitmayhave
annoyedtheotherplayers.Itseemedtomethateveryonewastryingtobecautious,tofinda
wayoutofthismesswithoutanythinggoingwrong.SoIspentaFatePointtotagtheFools
orHeroes?Aspect,andnarratedthatwhiletheDragonknights!movedintoposition,Omec's
menwouldtrytotakeL'azuli.

GMTravisdescribedingorydetailhowOmec'shandwassimultaneouslyburned,frozen,
melted,andblastedawaybythepowerofL'azuli.Andwiththat,Crucivorwokeup.

TheBattleofCrucivor'sLair

Crucivor,asbefitsa150footlongdragon,wasincrediblytough.Sothiswasoneofthose
desperateFatebattlesinwhichwehadnohopeofaffectinghimuntilwestackedupa
massivearrayofBoostsandAspects.Fortunately,basedonthepreviousCompelsthathad
causedustofalltobickeringandpartysplittingearlier,everyonewassittingonabouta
halfdozenFatePointseach.

Againtakingthetactical,mechanicalview,thisbattlewasadisaster.Theplayerscouldn't
agreeupon(andneveraskedeachother)whattheplanwashere:flee?fight?savethemen?
grabL'azuli?collapsetherooftosealoffthecavern?Weendedupdoingalittlebitofallof
theabove.

Crucivor'sfirstactwastoscatterthemennearhishoard,slayingthemajorityofthemoutright
andhurlingtherestaroundthechamber.Alsk/Sambeadspentmuchofthefightusingthe
ropestheywerecarryingtorescuethemenevenOmecmanagedtoclingtoaropeusing
hisremaininghand.AndtheDragonknights!spottedsomefortuitouslylocatedDwarven
JeffriesTubesintowhichthemencouldscurryafterbeingcarriedoutofCrucivor'sreach.

Kallistorax,seeingthefullgloryofL'azulionceCrucivorrearedup,facedadoublestrength
Compeltograbitforhimself.ButhedrewonhisbondwiththenobleTruz,aswellasthe
inherentnatureof(takesbreath)TheGloriousOrderofDistinguishedKnightsDragonbonded!
(exhales)torefusetheCompelandtostayfocusedondistractingCrucivor.

AgainstWinglaf'swishes,FraebogdecidedtotakethefighttoCrucivorheadon.Afewearly
exchangesestablishedthatwecouldbarelytouchthemightydragonwithoutmanyCreate
Advantagesinplace,whilethedragonstruckbackwithmassivelypowerfulattacks.

(I'moftwomindsabouttheuseofWeaponandArmorratingsinFateCoregames.Onone
side,itdoesgiveaconvenientwaytomodelinthiscaseCrucivor'sWeapon8attackthat
woulddealthatmanyshiftsofStress,overandabovewhatevertheoutcomeoftheattack.On
theotherside,severaltimestheseparationbetweenacreature'sMightorotherattackstat
anditsWeaponvaluemeantthatwegotsomenumbersmixedup.I'mprettysureatleasttwo

bighitsononeeachsidedidmoreshiftsofStress,andthengotsoakedwithbigger
Consequences,thantheyshouldhave.)

FraebogusedherGreatBreathattacktwice,onceincurringaMildConsequenceandagain
incurringaSevereConsequence.ThisisamechanicinDragonknights!thatallowsadragon
tobuffupitsattackwithadditionalshifts.Nottobeconfusedwithadragon'sFinalBreaththat
causesittobecomeSpentandunabletobreatheveragain,likeGorgorog.

Whileallthisfightingwasgoingon,wenoticedthatL'azuliwasbeginningtoglowandchange,
likesomethingwithinwastryingtogetout.Theeggwasbeginningtohatch.

Crucivoringestedpiecesofthesurroundingcavern,thenblastedusallwithpulverizedrock.
AlmosteveryonetookStressandConsequences.Thingswerelookinggrim.

Fraebog'sGreatBreathattackshadputsomeConsequencesonCrucivor,andforcedhimto
useupmostofhisFatePoints,butthebeastwasstilllayingwastetous.Thegiantdragon
dugitswaythroughthewallsofthecavernuntilitsheadwaslevelwiththeledgeuponwhich
weperchedandunleashedanothershotgunlikeblastofrockfragments.Oneofthesestruck
Winglafinthehead,givinghimaFracturedSkull(SevereConsequence,plusa3Stressbox,
tosoaka9shifthit.AndthatwasafterspendingseveralFatePointstomitigatesomeofthe
damage.)

Seizingtheopportunity,KallistoraxflewdirectlytowardsCrucivor.Kallistoraxdrewonallhis
remainingenergy(FatePoints,Boosts,anythingwecouldfind)tochannelhisstrengthintohis
ownGreatBreathweapon,agoutofacidthatenteredCrucivor'smouth,burnedthroughhis
softpalate,throughhisskull,andoutthebackofhishead.Atthesametime,Kallistorax
managedtoraisehistailintoplacetoprotectTruzfrommuchofthedamageKallistorax
meltedoffhisowntailinordertokillCrucivor.Sometal!

BacktotheFort

EveryoneexceptthenimbleAlskwashorriblywounded.Somehowwewereabletoretrieve
theremainingmen(apaltydozenoutofthe100whohadbeenlookingforthedwarven
spring)andwendourwayoutofDuurHalla.Althoughwedidn'tquiteleaveBendwin'sterritory
untilsomewhataftermoonrise,luckilythatdragondidnotshowuptogiveusanytrouble.

Backatthefort,ittookseveralweeksforustorecover.Duringthoseweeks,wenoticedmany
electricalstormsandauroraeinthemountainsnearDuurHalla.Whateveritwas,wewerefar
toobadlywoundedtodoanythingaboutit.Bythetimewerecovered,wesawtheskiesabove
themountainsglowingwithashimmeringbluewhiteincandescence.

Wesetofftocheckitout.Andsaw,leapingfrommountaintoptomountaintop,agreat
dragonevengreaterthanCrucivorthatweknewtobetheurdragonL'azuliReborn.


Fraebog/Winglafwerethefirsttoarrive,followedshortlybyAlsk/Sambeadand
Kallistorax/Truz.WespokerespectfullytoL'azuliReborn,butshepeppereduswithquestions.
Whywereherchildren,thedragons,bondedwithsuchfeeblecreaturesashumans?We
spokeofthestrengthofourbonds,howtheymadeuscollectivelygreaterthanthesumofour
parts.

L'azuliRebornreachedouttograspourbonds,oneineachclawandoneinhertail.(Howshe
wasabletograspametaphorical,empathiclinkismerelyanillustrationofL'azuli'spower.)
Weknewthatwiththeslightestgesture,shecouldrendourbondsasunder.
