Notiziario Ufficiale del Circolo Italiano di Dallas Giugno 2015 Vol 36 Num 6

On Saturday, June 13, the Italian Club of Dallas will

launch a celebration of all things Italian: Festa Italia!
The one day event will take place at John Paul
II High Schools East Sports Complex at 800
Woodburn Corners at the intersection of Plano
Parkway, in Plano. Opening ceremonies are at 10:30
am with Special Olympics representatives, Judge
Cercone, an honor guard and other local dignitaries.
Proceeds from the festival support Special Olympics
of North Texas and other charities of the ICD.
Festa admission tickets will be on sale the day of the
festival: $5 per adult or $15 per family. Parking is
free. The entire area is wheelchair accessible.
Bring your kids, family and friends to the fun and
share the memories. The ICD hopes to make this
an annual event and the primary fundraiser for your
Club. Be a part of history in the making!
One of the many highlights of the day is the Bocce
Tournament where 32 teams will compete for cash
prizes. Each 2-person team can register for $200,
which includes a pre-tournament dinner and T-Shirt.
Pre-registration starts at 8:30 a.m., the competition
starts at 9 a.m. Registration forms are on Festa
Italias web site: http://www.festaitaliantx.com.
Compete in the tournament or play just for fun.
Italians have played bocce for centuries in streets and
open plazas and now at Festa Italia.
Grape Stomping teams of 3 persons (one stomper at
a time and one collector) will compete in stomping
15 lbs. of grapes in 4 minute stomps. The team

who stomps and gathers the most juice per heat will
be declared the winner. Prizes will be awarded for
each heat. Only teams that submit the completed
registration form, waiver, and fee of $45 per 3-person
team will be officially entered. As with the Bocce
Tournament, registration forms are on the web site.
Two local bands are providing entertainment: Cherry
Band, who performs a wide selection of hits from
the last 40 years, and Bona Fide Blues, a 7-person
contemporary blues group. I Colori Italiani and
childrens I Piccoli Colori dance groups will perform
traditional Italian dances throughout the day. We
will have a cultural booth displaying traditions and
costumes from different regions of Italy. Maps of
Italy will be used for festival participants to mark
locations of family origins or memorable visits to
Italy.
The Childrens Activity Center will feature craft
activities: paper crafts, cookie decorating, crafts with
pasta and Italian language games. There will be
Bocce, other games and bounce houses as well. All
activities are staffed with helpers.
Our team of bakers has cranked up the ovens to
provide wonderful baked treats for sale. We will
have Italian sandwiches, pastas, pizza selections and
drinks for purchase. Wine and beer are also available.
There will even be a pasta eating contest!
Round out your day admiring Italian engineering at
the auto display of current and vintage cars. Take
a chance at winning a red 2015 Vespa by buying a
ticket or two at the Vespa Raffle!

Celebrate Independence Day at

the Italian Club of Dallas
In June 1776 representatives of the 13 colonies then fighting in the
revolutionary struggle weighed a resolution that would declare their
independence from Great Britain. On July 2 the Continental Congress
voted in favor of independence, and two days later its delegates adopted
the Declaration of Independence, a historic document drafted by Thomas
Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated
as the birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging
from fireworks, parades and concerts to more casual family gatherings and
barbecues.
Speaking of barbecues, come to the Italian Club of Dallas on Friday, July
3, to taste some Italian Sausage and Hot Dog sandwiches and baked pasta.
Pricing is as follows:
Sausage & Peppers on a roll $6, Hot Dogs on a bun $3, Italian Pasta Salad
$4. Beer, Wine and soft drinks will also be available for sale.
Doors open at 5:00 pm.
Bring your lawn chairs for sitting in the parking lot for easy viewing of the
Addison fireworks and the spectacular Addison Airport Airshow featuring
the Cavanaugh Flight Museum Warbird flyover. And after the fireworks
show, stick around to socialize and avoid the traffic there will surely
be plenty of card games. This is a fun evening for all so put it on your
calendars now! No reservations required!
Did You Know?
John Adams believed that July 2nd was the correct date on which to
celebrate the birth of American independence, and would reportedly
turn down invitations to appear at July 4th events in protest. Adams and
Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826--the 50th anniversary of the
adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

Three Italian regiments (some 1,500 men) fought for American

independence: the Third Piemonte, the 13th Du Perche, and the
Royal Italian.

Tuscan physician Filippo Mazzei fought with Thomas Jefferson

and Patrick Henry during the American Revolution and inspired the
Jeffersonian phrase, All men are created equal.

Francesco Vigo, the first Italian-American citizen, served as a colonel,

spy, and financier during the American Revolution. Along with
George Rogers Clark, he helped settle the Northwest Territory.

The Italian Americans

THE ITALIAN AMERICANS, a new two-part, four-hour documentary
series about the Italian experience in America, premiered on PBS in
February. For those that missed this series or those that want to see it
again, the Italian Club of Dallas will be showing the series on two Sundays
June 7 and June 28.
The series, written and produced by John Maggio and narrated by
Academy Award-nominated actor Stanley Tucci, explores the evolution
of Italian-Americans from the late nineteenth century to today, from
outsiders once viewed with suspicion and mistrust to some of the most
prominent leaders of business, politics and the arts today.
Come out to the Club and enjoy the series with la famiglia. Also on the
last evening of the series, both the DVDs and the book will be raffled.
Doors will open at 2 pm with refreshments and popcorn; the movie will
begin about 2:30 and then dinner will be served at the end of the movie
4:30 or 5 pm.
On June 7 we will be serving Pasta Primavera with a salad and a side
sausage link. On June 28 we will serve Spaghetti and meatballs with a
side salad. Pricing is $10 member or non-member. Of course, soft drinks,
wine and beer will be available at their normal prices.
Please make your reservations at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/theitalian-americans-showing-in-2-parts-tickets-17109288342 or call the

Attention All Club Members

We have a tremendous amount of history in our Club and many
wonderful members who donate their time and money to help spread
our Italian Culture and make this Club a place for all of us to come to
enjoy with our extended familyour membership.
Our purpose is to respect, honor and cherish our history and past
members who have helped build this Club. In addition, we also want to
acknowledge people from our current membership base. We have many
members who give their time and efforts to this Club freely and do
things for the Club because they want to do it. The Club is like family;
if someone needs help we go over to their house and help out.
The Board selected 2 individuals for this month. We have an open
door policy on nominations so anyone can nominate someone and give
their name to the Board.
Keep in mind there is no specific order or rules to go by here, its just
a simple criterion of saying GRAZIE MILLE to a member who help
makes this Club a better place for this month or since they have been a
member.
Ken Venuso President

Grazie Mille - Member Of The Month

This month the Board wants to recognize a person who consistently does
whatever is needed to help us enjoy the Cicerone and many events at the
Club for her continuous efforts she gives every week and every month.

KATE WASSMAN
It has been said there is a strong dedicated person
behind every great person. In our case there is a
strong dedicated and wonderful person behind the
Cicerone, the Festa Italia and the Club.
When we see Kate at the Club, we see the kind
and always smiling, friendly person that we enjoy
visiting with on a Wednesday evening, at Friday
Cena or a special event.
What we do not see is the person who is spending
innumerable hours working with volunteers to put
the Cicerone together. We see the end product in
print or in our email. What the board sees is a tireless person who is
working with the volunteers to get their articles in on a deadline, then
working with the printers and arranging where the articles or ads or
announcements go in this particular edition.
This is not the end; it is just another step before the proofing and
making corrections and re-submitting them for the final proofing, so
it can be sent to the president for the final approval before printing and
emailing it out to the membership. This is a major undertaking and we
are very thankful for all Kate does.
Wait, there is more. She also has taken over the duties of working with
Eventbrite and helping with the Festa Italia website and other ICD
events to make sure everything is linked and can be charged properly.
She is also involved with outside media to see that Festa Italia is being
promoted in the Dallas area.
Yes, behind our Italian Club of Dallas we do not see the person whose
diligent work makes sure the end products are the best they can be for
our members.
We have many people each month doing so much for the Club, but this
month lets recognize Kate for her gracious and continuous efforts for
the Club and the Cicerone. So the next time we see Kate, lets not just
say Ciao or Buona Sera, but also thank her for the wonderful work she
does for the Cicerone and the Italian Club.
GRAZIE MILLE, KATE

A Look Back Grazie Mille

As a Club that stands for Italian culture we have an obligation to honor
and cherish our past. We have a group of individuals who are known as
Founders, lifetime members or long-time members.
They helped establish and build the Club. They helped create what
we have today, a Club that is a place to enjoy being around friends
and family and the Italian culture. It is up to our current and future
members to learn from our past and to remember what these individuals
created,
THE ITALIAN CLUB OF DALLAS
Once again we are challenged to select someone who was there at
the beginning or at an early stage of the Club or a member we all
know; however, our aim is not to single one person out, because their
contributions are greater than someone elses. Our focus is on honoring
and cherishing people from our past or current membership base but in
no specific order.
It is with pride the Board announces our Honoree this month of A
LOOK BACK

GINA LECCA GRAZIE MILLE

Some of us know Gina from a Cena
or a special event. We know she loves
music and loves to dance. She and
her dance partner Pedro (her loving
spouse) are always out on the dance
floor regardless what the music is.
They can do it all.
Gina is a busy person, but she still
finds time to do things for the Club,
from bake sales and volunteer work to
helping the staff.
If you joined the Club on our old
systems your name, address, phone
number, email address, type of
membership and spouses name
was entered into that system by one
person, Gina Lecca.
Thats where I met Gina. I joined the membership committee and
everyone said you need to get with Gina. She was the one who greeted
the people at the new members reception and made them feel at home
immediately. She was tenacious at getting all their information and
calling people when it was time to renew.
Gina makes you feel like family when you sit next to her at a Cena or
another event. She sometimes brings something extra to the Cena to
snack on or something she just baked. Maybe thats why people like
to sit with her and Pedro. If its your birthday, she may even bring you
a little gift. Its that favorite aunt or great neighbor you had next door
that you always wanted to visit or be around.
Our Club has many members and you probably wouldnt find one nicer
than our wonderful Gina Lecca. From all of us at the Italian Club of
Dallas,
GRAZIE MILLE, GINA LECCA

750Th Anniversary of Dante Alighieri

The Italian Senate celebrated the 750th anniversary of the birth of
Dante Alighieri and famed artist and Oscar winner Roberto Benigni
recited some passages of the Paradise from the Divine Comedy and
cracked some jokes about Italian Prime Minister Renzi.
Not even the official celebrations for the 750th anniversary of the
birth of Dante bridled the exuberance of Roberto Benigni, who began
his performance in the hall of the Palazzo Madama with jokes about
Premier Matteo Renzi and the Democratic Party.
This anniversary comes at the right time: if he got in two years, the
Senate would have found it closed, Benigni made his debut in the hall
of the Senate before the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella,
the Senate president, Pietro Grasso, the chairman Emeritus, Giorgio
Napolitano, and other authorities.
This is really a place for Dante, adds the Oscar winner, after all,
Dante was personally involved in politics, the type of politics that
should be regarded as well today, politics to serve and to build. He
was a very busy and committed man who made many enemies for his
temper.
After all, you know, smiles Benigni, alluding to the premier Renzi,
that Florentine politicians have a temper. He did not like to be
characterized as Guelph, White or Black, or Ghibellino. He wanted to
be a party unto himself, as founding the party of Dante, in short, the
Democratic Party of the time, he quipped.
After an analysis of the beauty of the Comedy and his extraordinary
use of language, Benigni recites Canto XXXIII of the Paradise, which
received a standing ovation from the entire Senate at the end of the
performance of the Oscar winner.
The Divine Comedy, said Benigni, is a miracle, a work whose beauty
takes your breath away, written in a language that despite being more
than 700 years old we still understand. And the most beautiful song,

in Benignis opinion as actor and director, is Canto XXXIII of the

Paradise, the last one, which is perfection itself, a jewel, an incredible
gift.
Dante is a prophet of hope, a herald of the possibility of the
redemption and liberation of humanity. He invites us to come back to
the sense of our human journey through the many dark woods around
us and making the pilgrimage to the bigger goal, the love that moves
the sun and the stars. It is a part of the greeting that Pope Francis has
entrusted to Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi for the opening ceremony of
the 750th anniversary of the birth of Dante.
Quoting from Pope Franciss message, I want to join the chorus of
those who believe that Dante is an artist of the highest universal value,
who still has a lot to say and to give through his important works to all
who are willing to walk the path of knowledge, authentic self-discovery,
the world, the deep meaning and the transcendence of existence. The
comedy can still be read as a real pilgrimage, both personal and interior,
as well as communal, ecclesiastical, social and historical. It is the model
of every authentic journey of humanity to reach a new condition marked
by harmony, peace and happiness. This is the horizon of all true
humanism. Dante is a prophet of hope, a herald of the possibility of
redemption, of the liberation movement and of the depth of every man
and woman.
The president of the Senate, Pietro Grasso, said, We now reconnect
ideally anniversaries of the past to regain the enthusiasm of belonging
to the Italy already prophesied by Dante, to reiterate the will of moral
redemption through culture, but also to renew the homage to Dante,
whose figure is universally recognized. The modern relevance of
Dante is always alive in every area of culture. Today we inaugurate the
celebrations of Dantes birth, he continued, and for the next six years,
until the 700th anniversary of his death, we will try to remember the
figure and work of the poet. This is an occasion to rediscover the poet
as an essential symbol of the cultural identity of Italy and Italians.

SPINACH AND SAUSAGE STUFFED PEPPERS

Ingredients (per 4 servings)

2 tablespoons chopped red onion

1. One 5-ounce bag baby spinach

2 slices of white sandwich bread,

finely chopped

1 pound sweet or hot Italian sausage,

casings removed

Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1/4 cup milk

1 large egg

2 tablespoons freshly grated

Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

8 small or 4 large Italian frying

peppers halved lengthwise & cored,
stems left intact

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons pine nuts

1 cup canned tomato sauce

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

Directions
1. In a very large skillet, cook the spinach over high heat just until wilted, about 1 minute. Drain and press out all of the
water. Coarsely chop the spinach. Rinse out and dry the pan.
2.

In a large bowl, knead the chopped bread with the milk, egg and cheese to form a paste. Knead in the pine nuts, onion,
sausage and spinach and season lightly with salt and pepper. Using lightly moistened hands, divide the mixture among
the pepper halves and lightly pack it in.

3.

In the skillet, heat the olive oil until shimmering. Add the stuffed peppers, filling side down, and cook over high heat
until well-browned, about 4 minutes. Turn the peppers and cook until the skins are browned and blistered, about 4
minutes longer. Add the tomato sauce and chicken broth, cover and simmer until the sausage filling is cooked through
and the peppers are tender, 5 to 6 minutes. Transfer to plates and serve right away.

Not Too Soon to Save the Date

Before you know it, football will be occupying our weekends; the field
of presidential wannabes will, with over a year still to go, be numbing
our brains with their constant blather; and more importantly, on the
fourth Saturday in September Special Olympics North Texas will be
holding their annual Bocce Tournament at Oran Good Park in Farmers
Branch. So stop reading this article and immediately mark your
calendars for Saturday, September 26, Special Olympics Bocce. Good!
Now that youve saved the date please read on.
By the time this article goes to press, we will have marked the end of
our Hunger Busters 2014/2015 volunteer season. As in previous years
our Italian Club volunteers will be on hiatus for the summer, which
includes the better part of June and all of July and August. Depending
upon the DISD fall schedule we may resume our volunteer work at
Hunger Busters as early as Wednesday, August 26
Many thanks to our volunteers Carmine and Julie Nittolo, Fred
and Elfried Napurano, Nicola and Livia Tamburrino, Dee Mellett,
Carole Strippoli, Brenda Finch, John Pully, Lynda Hartsell, Charles
and Carole Castellano, Nick Parigi, Fred Hansen, Semira Pacifico,
Ken Venuso and Dottie Parlapiano. Youve helped make the lives of
hundreds of DISD children healthier and happier and for that you
should be proud.
Help us as the Hunger Busters catch phrase says to FEED THE
NEED. A few hours once a month to help put food in a hungry childs
stomach is not such a terrible burden to endure. Actually, as our
volunteers will attest, working together is a lot of fun and the time goes
by very quickly. So please, call me at

Italian Traditional Dance Group

I Colori Italiani and I Piccoli Colori
For those who do not know, the Italian Club has had an Italian
Traditional Dance group since the early eighties. Maria Chobany
and I were two of the original members. Others who have been with
the group for 10 to 25 years are Marguerite Buccino, Bill Lombardi,
Andrew Chobany, Shannon Salloum and Frank diSimone. Some have
passed on. The youngsters and teens in the group went away to college
or other activities took them away and they could not continue. We
practiced once a week. Parents encouraged the children and brought
them to practices. We had about 12 to 15 in the adult group at one
time and 10 to 15 children involved. In the last 30 years the groups
have performed in many local, international or Italian festivals, as well
as events in Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas.
We are practicing with the childrens group and adult group on
Saturday mornings at the Club. Children and Adults 10:30 am until
about 12:30 pm. Times vary slightly due to kids soccer and other
involvements. Call to let us know your interest and to be put on the
email list and texting list.
We are in need of more dancers, adults and children. It seems the
interest in this part of our culture is not valued any longer here in the
area. We would like to see more of our members join us and commit
to this wonderful expression of Italian Culture. Please contact one of us
about more information.
