eneral contractor will proceed engineering and

design in accordance with the criteria and
guidelines given by the Client /Engineer. When
the project definition phase has been essentially
completed and reviewed by the Client/ Engineer, the
bulk of the project's engineering activities are taken
place.
It involves the preparation of detailed drawings,
specifications, procurement of equipment, studies and
analysis, and establishment of detailed project schedules
and cost estimates. The Engineering Dept. or Div. of
HANJUNG has developed its own method of calculation
as to mechanical design of thermal equipments. The
Engineering Dept. works on its own computer package
similar to or same as to SELEK, DESAL for process
design, HEAT TRANSFER RESEARCH INSTITUTE(HTRI),
DISASU, PROPERTY, CHEMICALS MED, VC, VTE and
D/H/ F/T-RC computer program originated from U.S.A.
and, if necessary, may require technical help of services
of our licensor group or partner collaborated for job to set
up its own program.
All types of average pressure heat transfer equipment,
pressure vessels and large storage tanks with process
piping can be elaborated according to TEMA, HEI
and/ or equivalent code used with ASME code and / or
equivalent where applicable.
Furthermore the stress analysis about the tube sheet
and the flange, and the flange to tube sheet junction is
developed according to ASME Code Sec. VIII Div. 2.
Beside HANJUNG has over twenty years of experience in
designing and manufacturing of heat transfer
equipment in all process and of desalination field, we are
up to date with regard to the technological evolution.
The Engineering Department together with the other
department of the company strictly complies with the
prescription of QUALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEM set up in

1976 according to prescription of ASME which has

authorized HANJUNG to stamp its vessels with the "U"
symbol and "N" symbol.
Maximum usage of the vast capabilities of modern
computers is employed to aid the design effort of all
projects. The primary application of computers is
normally associated with design efforts requiring large
amounts of repetitive calculations or calculation solution
methods.
The following applications are typical of the modes of
computer usage on engineering problems.
- Process design computer applications range from
simple curve fitting of data to tray-to-tray calculations
for multi-component, multi-product distillation
columns. In addition to using common library
programs for simple fluid flow and physical properties,
special programs are written to solve unique problems
of heat and material balances or other special
problems not easily tailored to the available programs.
- Electrical design utilizes computer solutions to complex
problems such as faulty analysis and system voltage
drops. More specialized programs include those for
cable tray routing and scheduling, electrical h e a t
tracing design, lighting design, etc.
- Structural and foundation design utilizing computer
methods range from simple spread footings to
three-dimensional frame analysis.
- Computer programs are utilized by the piping engineer
for piping stress analysis, pipe size and weight
calculations. Related programs are used to generate
pipe insulation and painting quantities.
- Pressure vessel design is performed by hand and/or
computer. A related program provides flanges designed
to various design codes.
- Engineering scheduling and progress reporting relative
to manhours mobilized and drawings prepared are
handled by the computer.
- The expertise of other disciplines are available for
consultation. Computer application by these groups
includes solutions to problems in diverse topics such as
dynamic wave analysis, vibration analysis, flare
radiation and center of gravity calculations.

DASALINATION PLANT
Choosing the optimum system for any location
involves the consideration of many factors, including
the source of water supply, the amount of minerals in
the water, the amount of pure water needed and the
cost of producing it.
Several firms have become specialists in one or two
processes. But to perform the more demanding and
more productive assignment -to select objectively, to
engineer, to construct and to start up whatever kind
of system is best to solve any individual problemrequires a comprehensive capability. HANJUNG
Engineering capability covers all phases of design and
engineering for plants of many kinds sizes to meet any

specified requirements involving the following process

with the assistance of process engineering from our
Engineering Partners.
Sea Water and Brackish Water
Multi-Stage Flash Type (MSF)
Multi-Effect Type (MED)
- Thermal Vapor Compression
- Land Base
- Barge Mounted
Vertical Tube Evaporator (VTE)
Reverse Osmosis Type (RO)
- Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO)
- Brackish water Reverse Osmosis (BWRO)

The brine top temperature depends on :

(a) Available steam quality
(b) Scale prevention technique
(c) Brine concentration and nature of
dissolved salts
The last stage temperature depends on :
(a) Cooling water inlet temperature
(b) Absolute pressure maintained in the last
stage by the ejector system
In practice, MSF plants are designed for various gain
ratios (tons of water per tons of steam supplied to
brine heater). A gain ratio of 12 : 1 is the practical
upper limit for this type of plant. Obviously, the

production rate of an MSF palnt is a direct function of

the flashing brine flow and the flash range (brine top
temperature-last stage temperature). Also, in theory,
the actual number of stages os not important for a
given gain ratio with different number of stages.
However, the number of stages determines the total
heat exchange area required for the heat recuperation
section. A large number of stages results in a decrease
of the total heat exchange area required. Because of
this, the maximum number of stages is within
relatively narrow limits for a certain plant. In practice,
however, it can be said that the number of stages
increases at increasing gain ratios, but also depends on
the plant's capacity.

MULTI-STAGE FLASH (MSF)

MULTI-EFFECT DISTILLER ; THERMOCOMPRESSOR (MED-TVC)
Flash evaporation takes place when a fluid is heated
to a certain temperature and evaporation occurs both
above and below the atmospheric pressure : under
gradual decreasing pressure the phenomenon of
flashing by pressure reduction is called flash
evaporation.
The principle of operation for multi-stage flash
plants is to heat the seawater(brine) to a certain
temperature, then pass it into a flash chamber where
the pressure is maintained below the equilibrium
pressure corresponding to the temperature at which
the brine enters. Part of this brine flahes into vapor,
and affer passing a demister, this vapor is condensed

on an overhead tube bundle, forming distilled water.

The water is collected in a trough mounted below the
tube bundle and forms the end product fresh water.
As the vapor condenses it also heats the recirculating
brine flowing in the tubes.
Seawater with a salt concentration of 60,000 to
70,000 PPM totally dissolved solids is converted into a
distillate and fresh water with a concentration of only
a few PPM solids : a tremendous reduction in the salt
content. An MSF type plant operate between two
definite temperatures : the brine top temperature
(brine heater outlet temperature) and the last stage
temperature.

This process is a combination of a thermocompressor and a film multiple effect evaporator. The
multiple effect evaporator has a thin film of seawater
sprayed onto on the outside of the horizontal
arranged heat exchanger tubes.
Evaporation in MED occurs by the exchange of the
latent heat through the heat transfer surface between
condensing vapor on one side and evaporating brine
on the other. Steam introduced into the first, highest
temperature effect is condensed inside tubes, and the

heat thereby released causes a nearly equal amount of

vapor to be evaporated from the feed water on the
outside of the tubes. The vapor produced in the first
effect is, in turn, condensed in the second effect,
again evaporating a portion of the brine feed.
The process is repeated up to last effect from which a
portion of the vapor generated is extracted by steam
jet ejectors (thermo- compressors) which discharge the
combined motive steam and extracted vapor to the
first effect where it provides the heat input to the first

effect. The remaining fourth effect vapor is condensed

in a final condenser by transferring heat to seawater.
In coming raw water flows successively through the
tubes of a flash stage and final condenser. All or most
of the heated raw water exiting the final condenser
tubes becomes feed water to the evaporating effects
with the remainder (if any) being discharged. The feed
is treated with an additive to prevent the formation of
alkaline scale on heat transfer surfaces.
The heated feed is sprayed over the outside of the
horizontal evaporator tube bundle in the first effect.

As the feed trickles down through successive rows of

tubes, a portion of it evaporates. The vapor produced
passes through vapor separators which disengage any
entrained brine droplets. Then, the vapor is transferred
via ducting to the tubes of the second effect. This
plant operate at low temperature (Max. 70C) to avoid
problems of scale formation without having to use acid
for operation or for cleaning. This process is available
in any capacity up to 2 MIGD(9000 Ton /Day) and with
a range of performance ratio. (Refer to FIG.1)

Reverse osmosis is a membrane desalination process

utilizing a membrane film which allows water to pass
through it but acts as a barrier to dissolved salts.
When pure water is on one side of a semipermeable
membrane and salt water is on the other, the pure
water diffuses through the membrane into the salt

water as though under pressure. The process is osmosis

and the force causing the flow is osmotic pressure. By
exerting pressure on the salt solution the flow is
reversed and pure water driven out of the salt solution
through the membrane.

Typical N-Effect Process Illustration

PRIMARY
MEDIA FILTERS

VERTICAL TUBE EVAPORATION (VTE)

In vertical tube evaporation, salt water falls in a thin
film through vertical tubes in a large chamber. As it
falls, it is heated by steam that condenses on the outer
surface of the tubes. This heat exchange converts
some of the salt water in the tubes into steam and
some of the steam around the tubes into fresh water
(comdensate).
Steam generated inside the tubes in the first
chamber flows to the second chamber, and condenses
on the tubes there. The process is repeated in several

chambers. Because each bundle of tubes is called an

"effect", and because a thin film of water falls down
the inside surface of the tubes, the process is
sometimes called "multiple-effect falling-film"
distillation.
Vertical tube evaporators are most cost-effective in
large plants requiring high efficiency. They represent
an advance over older systems in that less heat transfer
surface is required and the water needs to be
circulated only once.
