Nokia Dynamic Abis solution

Harry Kuosa EDGE Marketing Manager Nokia Networks

Nokia Dynamic Abis is a nonblocking and real time transmission

solution to maximally optimize
EDGE and GPRS traffic in Abis

Higher EDGE air interface bit rates

require up to 5 fold Abis capacity
Coding scheme Bit rate (bps)
CS-1 8,0 GPRS

Abis PCM allocation (fixed +

pool/slave)

CS-2 12,0
and CS-3 14,4 EDGE
CS-4 20,0 MCS-1 8,8
MCS-2 11,2 MCS-3 14,8
MCS-4 17,6
EDGE MCS-5 22,4 MCS-6 29,6 MCS-7
44,8 MCS-8 54,4 MCS-9 59,2

Higher data rates dont fit in 16

kbit/s channels

32, 48, 64 or 80 kbit/s Abis links

needed

Fixed Abis may require 3 times

more capacity than

Nokia Dynamic Abis enables higher

EDGE bitrates with less Abis
capacity due to EDAP Pool
One master channel as today for voice and data, no blocking 0
introduced 2

For higher data rates additional 16 kbps slave channels are 3 always
4
allocated as required by the MCS from the EDAP pool 5

Each master timeslot can use individual 16 kbps slave 6 timeslots from
7
the EDAP. However when a master timeslot needs more than one slave
timeslot then the consecutive slave timeslots are always reserved

EDAP resources are reserved when TBF data transfer starts

When at the end of data transmission the TBF is released also

the allocated channels in the pool are released

Maximal utilization of Abis resources, due to fact that Nokia

Dynamic Abis does not introduce blocking nor RLC loss

resources If Reduced MCS is MCS2..MCS8 or CS2..CS3, then inadequate EDAP
resource counter is incremented If Reduced MCS is CS1 or MCS1 then no EDAP
resource counter is incremented

DL RLC retransmission with any MCS or CS need no EDAP resources

Maintenance of the TRS lines is

easier and cheaper with Nokia
Dynamic Abis
Typically maintenance effort is directly related to the amount of
cross connections and capacity occupied.

The Nokia Dynamic Abis pool offers concentration capability that

allows reducing the needed capacity compared to fixed Abis -the pool
is also compact to manage.

This offers direct savings in maintenance effort.

The service level and concentration ratio can be selected by the

operator -maximized service with minimized cost

Dimensioning the Nokia Dynamic

Abis
EDGE Dynamic Abis Pool (EDAP) is a shared extra Abis resource
for EDGE channels based on need

EDAP as such does not create blocking (due to fixed master

timeslot availability outside EDAP), but non-availability of EDAP
resources may cause degradation of the user bit rates

Careful dimensioning and follow-up of the usage of the allocated

EDAP resources is important

Average bit rates

-radio effective bit rate per radio TSL

Capacity needed in Abis

-one Abis PCM throughput -optimised EDAP pool

Key Nokia Dynamic Abis planning principle

TRXs (Traffic channels, signalling) and required EDAP within same E1/T1
frame

TRXs and EDAPs to be in same physical route

Loop protection is OK
Splitting of the E1/T1 frame is not recommended

EDAP size in the BTS has to be the same as the EDAP size in the BSC

Max. EDAP size is 12*64 kbps

Timeslot order in the BTS EDAP has to be the same as in the BSC EDAP
The pool can be shared by max. 20 transceivers in the same cabinet
One PCU can have up to 16 Dynamic Abis pools

Dynamic Abis operation when

congestion

In this case:
4 radio timeslots available in good radio conditions.

EDAP pool size is 8 x 16 kbit/s.

MS#1 starts FTP download (2 radio tsl, MCS9 => 8 EDAP chs
at 16 kbit/s).

MS#2 starts FTP download (2 radio tsl, MCS9). Now 4 radio timeslots in use => 2
EDAP chs at 16 Kbps per radio timeslot => speed downgraded and MCS6 used by both
the MSs.

MS#2 stops FTP download => MS#1 reverts back to MCS9.
