Guide to using the program J.

Pownall
Information
To close the program prematurely: Ctrl + Alt + Esc
In the file where the program is saved there are various picture files which are used
by the program. It is important to keep them where they are, or the program might
not find them when it calls them up!
There are two versions of the experiment, one where the subjects indicates with the
right hand that either shapes or colors are the same
(Eng_Alternating_Runs1_Shapes_Rt_Correct), and the other where the subject uses the
left hand for this indication (Eng_Alternating_Runs1_Shapes_Lft_Correct).
Data
There are 141 trials done during the instruction and practice session. (A trial here
corresponds to a single task presented in one of the squares of the quadrant). Data is
collected during these instruction and practice sessions, but only for the proper running
of the program.
After the instruction and practice session, there are another 112 trials are to be done.
Once the actual task begins, data is not collected during the first 16 trials (NOTE: in my
original description of the experiment I erroneously wrote that data was not collected
during the first 12 trials. I have since made the modification). Data begins to be
collected on the 17th trial (starting the 5th time the subject goes around the quadrant).
From this point on, 96 trials are used to actually collect the data that is to be analyzed.
A lot of the columns that appear in the E-DataAid table are irrelevant for analysis. Much
of it is shows data that is used by the program in order for it to run.
Relevant may be:
ExperimentName

Name of the version of the program being used

Subject

Subject number that has been assigned

Session

Number of the session being recorded

Block

Not to be confused with Test_Round. Block is used by

the program to identify different parts of its structure and
is irrelevant for data analysis. It is not the same as what I
refer to as a block of the experiment which equals the
completion of 4 trials, a completed trial corresponding to a
response given to the stimulus presented in each square of
the quadrant.

Trial

The sequential number of the trial (square) for which the

data has been collected (1-96)

Correct_Key

Indicates which key (3 or z) corresponds to a correct

response.

Quadrant

Indicates the square of the quadrant to which the trial

corresponds. (clockwise starting in the upper left hand
corner (A1, A2, B3, B4). A1 and B3 correspond to switch
trials.

Stim_Pic

This indicates the name of the picture files that the

program uses. Irrelevant for data analysis but necessary
for the program to function properly. It is important to
keep all the files where they are without moving them
around, or the program might not find them when it
calls them up!

StimulusTestData.ACC

Indicates whether the key corresponding to the

Correct_Key was pressed (1) or not (0). In other words,
whether a correct answer was given (1).

StimulusTestData.Durration Indicates whether the subject took more than 5 seconds to

Error
answer in which case the program jumped automatically
to the next trial square without recording an answer. If
replied within 5 seconds then the value recorded is
999999. If not then the value is given as 0 (error).
StimulusTestData.RESP

Indicates which key was pressed.

StimulusTestData.RT

How long it took the participant to press the key after the
stimulus was presented. In milliseconds.

Task_Type

Indicates whether the trial corresponds to a shape or color

task.

Test_Round

Indicates which block (complete quadrant of 4 squares)

the trial corresponds to (1-24).
