complete both items.
2-5mm (UK5 - US9) and 2-3 mm (UK9 - US9) Knitting Needles.

ABBREVIATIONS

K knit, P purl, st st stocking stitch (right side rows knit, wrong side rows purl), g st garter stitch (every
row K), st(s) stitches, beg beginning, rept repeat, tog together, M main colour, C contrast
colour, M1 make one stitch by picking up thread lying between sts and K into back of this loop,
TENSION
Cowl 20 sts and 24 rows to 10
cm (4 ins) over st st on 5 mm
needles
Mitts 24 sts and 36 rows to 10
cm (4 ins) over st st on 3 mm
needles
COWL
Using 5 mm needles and M,
cast on 130 sts. Working in st st
(throughout stripe sequence)
and commencing with a K row,
work 12 rows.
Continue as follows:
Join in C, and work 6 rows.
Change to M and work 2 rows.
Work 2 rows C
Work 2 rows M
Work 6 rows C
Work 2 rows M
Work 2 rows C
Work 2 rows M
Work 6 rows C
Break off C and now, working in
M only, commence rib.
Next row K2, * P2, K2, rept from
* to end.
Ne+xt row P2, * K2, P2, rept
from * to end.
Repeat these 2 rows 3 times
more.
Cast off very loosely in rib.

MAKING UP
Join back seam by top sewing.
FINGERLESS MITTS
RIGHT HAND
** Using 3 mm needles and M
cast on 98 sts.
Work 6 rows in g st.
Next row - * P2 tog, rept from * to
end. 49 sts.
Commence rib
1st row * K2, P2, rept from * to
last st, K1.
2nd row P1, * K2, P2, rept from
* to end.
These 2 rows form rib. Continue
in rib repeating 1st and 2nd row
once more, and then 1st row
again.
Break off M and join in C.
Continuing in rib as set, work 6
rows in C, and then 2 rows in M,
2 rows in C and 2 rows in M, and
then 4 rows in C.
Commence stocking stitch
Still using C, and commencing
with a K row, change to st st.
Work 2 rows in C, 2 rows in M. **
Thumb gusset
Continue working in st st, and

work thumb gusset as follows

marker, M1, K3, M1, place
marker, K21. 51 sts
2nd row Using C, P to end
3rd row Using C, K to end

Using C, and with right side

facing, beg at base of thumb,


pick up and knit 2 sts from base
of thumb, then knit to end of
row. 48 sts on needle.

Beg with a knit row, work 2 more
rows in st st.
Break off C, and continue in M
only.
Commence rib

Rept this row for a further 5 rows
Cast off very loosely in rib.

Thumb gusset
Continue working in st st, and
