CHEMICAL PLANT RELOCATION SOUTH CAROLINA

This project involved renovating an existing 21.5 acre site and 226,000 ft building for the
relocation and consolidation of two existing plants (from South Carolina and California). The

manufacturing building was upfit with fire rated walls and doors to create a 13,350 ft H3
hazardous occupancy (Class 1 Div 2) production area including flammable storage racks. PENTA
provided complete Process, Mechanical, Piping, HVAC, Electrical, Controls, Instrumentation, Civil
and Structural engineering, as well as an on-site Owners Representative for the project duration.
Four new clean rooms and associated safety
airlock system entry and exit rooms were
included with dedicated HVAC and air quality
control HEPA filtering units. A new central
operator control room was installed to manage
operations for the various production areas. A
new semi-automated rack storage system was
installed in the warehouse and a raw material
(flammable) storage tank farm was added.
Existing electrical infrastructure was utilized
where feasible and a new MCC was installed.
New power and controls tray, conduit, and
wiring for the relocated equipment (and new
variable frequency drives) were installed. Fire
protection sprinkler systems and alarms were
added and/ or modified as needed. Two hot oil
systems were relocated and modified.

The Business Operations and Development


upfit included six new Labs with associated
new and relocated lab casework, lab hoods,
utilities, and HVAC systems.

PENTA provided the full range of detailed


engineering and design services. Process
design included P&ID development, sizing of
relief devices and control valves, along with
pump and heat loss calculations. Mechanical
design
involved
preparing
equipment
arrangements and piping drawings for the
entire facility, HVAC design for offices, labs,
and clean rooms, and process ventilation for
workshops and scrubber system.
Civil/
Structural design included sitework, pipe racks
(exterior and interior), equipment operator
platforms and mezzanines.
Architectural
support was provided for layout and design of
a new plant entrance, offices, labs and lab
casework. Electrical/ Controls design included
all equipment grounding, power and lighting
plans; MCC specification, layout and design;
controls drawings for equipment operation,
PLC programming and development of
instrument data sheets.
