5K run named after

youth sports coach
Rain would not stop the family
and friends of John Cassidy from running on his behalf May 30.
Runners and walkers for the fourth
annual Coach Cassidy Classic 5K
moved from the starting area at Ben
Franklin Elementary School for the 5K
walk. The event is named after
Cassidy, who died from arterial lateral sclerosis (ALS) in January 2011. The
disease is also known as Lou Gehrigs
disease.
Cassidy coached several youth
sports teams, including summer basketball teams that included players
from Menomonee Falls and Hamilton
high schools.
I like so many of you was one of
those who was so totally blessed to be
touched by Coach Cassidy, WITI-TV
sportscaster Tom Pipines said. Like
many of you, I wear the ALS bracelet
to remind me every day of the beautiful man he was and still is and still
impacts so many people, its incredible.
Cassidy was a volunteer at Ben
Franklin Elementary, and a tree was
planted on the east side of the school
in his memory shortly after his death.
Pipines and participants gathered
around the tree prior to the walk/run.
Were going to warm up and

stay with one another and make this a
very special day, a very fruitful day,
Pipines said.
Pipines also introduced Al Clark,
who worked with Pipines at WITI-TV
for 25 years. Funds raised from the
event will benefit a family affected by
ALS. This year it was Clark and his
family.
Lynn Cassidy, Johns wife, thanked
volunteers for the event and sponsors.
She noted that several members of the
Cassidy family who came from out of
state for the event.
Just the community, I cant tell
you how much it helps to have support

from such a devastating disease. To

get through it and to go on, without
you guys it would have been very difficult, Lynn Cassidy said. So thank
you for all your support.
She noted that her husband often
said every days a party. She also
noted that he quoted the Star Wars
character Yoda, who said Do or do
not, there is no try.
I thank you for giving a try to
come out today to be with us, she
said.

Making a difference for customers

Glenroy creates solutions to meet industry needs
BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
When the U.S. power sports industry
sought a better package for oils and lubricants, Glenroy Inc. was the first to offer an
innovative solution.
The end result was the first stand up oil
pouch for the U.S. power sports industry,
which was developed by Glenroy in collaboration with Lube-Tech, a leading lubricant
formulator. The stand-up oil pouch was produced for Arctic Cat in 2013.
"Stand up pouches overall have been a
game-changer. We are seeing an influx of
products moving into flexible packaging."
said Amanda Dahlby, marketing manager
for Glenroy.
Dahlby explained that Arctic Cat had
developed an innovative new snowmobile
engine designed to use significantly less oil
up to 50 percent lessthan traditional snowmobile engines. Arctic Cat utilized lubricant
formulator Lube-Tech for assistance in engineering a synthetic oil designed for the
unique engine.
"The new oil required a durable, puncture-resistant package that would reinforce
the environmentally conscious characteristics
of the engine, provide convenient features to
make the oil easy to dispense, and maximize
visibility on retail shelves, ," Dahlby said. She
explained the package also required unique
barrier properties to protect the integrity of
the oil.
In response, Lube-Tech came to Glenroy,
and the companies collaborated to create a
package that would stand out and improve
the consumer experience.
To offer additional stand-up pouch manufacturing capabilities, Glenroy acquired the
pouch converting operations of PF Flexibles
in Hartford in January 2015.
"This acquisition provides Glenroy Inc.
with a wide range of pouch converting
equipment, and allows Glenroy to offer some
of the most extensive in-house premade
pouch capabilities in the industry. This pouch
converting equipment has produced awardwinning stand-up pouches," the company
said in a statement at the time.
With stand-up pouch usage continually

increasing, the acquisition of PF Flexibles,

combined with Glenroys 50 years of experience in flexible packaging, allows us to provide top-quality custom-engineered pouches.
This supports our mission of providing the
highest level of service to our customers.
Rich Buss, president and chief executive officer for Glenroy, said at the time.
Stand-up pouch usage is increasing
across many industries, as flexible packaging
materials have become more advanced, and
stand-up pouches with spouts or fitments are
becoming popular alternatives to rigid packaging, according to information from
Glenroy.
The move into the stand-up pouch market
is the latest evolution of a company which
was founded in July 1965 by Edwin and Ruth
Jablonka and their son Roy. The company
was named after Herb's and Ruth's sons,
Glen and Roy. The company is located at
W158 N9332 Nor-X-Way in Menomonee
Falls.
Herb Jablonka had a strong engineering
background was adept in working with plastic films. Prior to founding Glenroy, he
designed and built a machine to manufacture three-ring binder sheet protectors using a
vinyl film, and he was a co-owner of a company named Sealcraft in Milwaukee.
Glenroy initially focused on creating
laminating films, but also produced flexible
packaging materials. Glenroy then began
printing and manufacturing balloon film in
1974, which is the material used to create
mylar balloons.
"Over time, the company became the
top producer of balloon film in the US. In
fact, the standard sizes of todays mylar balloons are still based on the widths of balloon
film that Glenroy produced," the company
stated. "Meanwhile, Glenroy had established a loyal following of flexible packaging
customers whom appreciated the companys
consistently high-quality flexible packaging.
Demand for flexible packaging continued to
increase, and in the mid 1980s, Glenroy
purchased additional equipment to serve its
flexible packaging customer base. To this
day, Glenroys primary product focus is flexible packaging.
The company rebounded after a fire in

Try these 4 papa-pleasing presents

(NAPSI)If your dad is like many,
he spends much (maybe too much?) of
his time at work, and many times when
hes not there, his smartphone means
hes still not truly unplugged. In fact,
according to a survey by USA Today,
50 percent of dads find it difficult to
balance work and family. Fortunately,
this Fathers Day, you can get him the
gift of relaxation in four ways.
Heres how:
Bonding time. Fighting traffic on
the way to the office five days a week
and waiting in line at the coffee shop
can be draining. Plan a getaway that
will give everyone in the family an
opportunity to relax, such as a camping trip or rental cabin. The National
Retail Federation surveyed people purchasing gifts for their dads and found
that the top two gift categories are

greeting cards and special dinners or

outings.
Solitude. Life can get hectic and
the responsibilities of work and family
can take a toll on dear old Dad.
Kiplingers magazine suggests that
giving Dad time to do as he wants is
always a great idea. Vacating the
house for a few hours and letting him
have complete control of the remote
might be the easiest and most inexpensive gift you can give.
The outdoors. Fishing can be
another great way to unwind. Even if
the fish arent biting, the water can
deliver a much-needed escape from
the cubicleespecially aboard a pontoon or runabout rigged with an
Evinrude E-TEC G2 outboard engine.

Falls to review ordinance regulating raising of chickens

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN
MANAGING EDITOR
The Menomonee Falls General
Government Committee will be the next
step for discussion on village ordinances
related to raising chickens in residential
areas.
The current village zoning ordinance
limits raising chickens to properties with a
minimum of 35 acres. The item was
brought up during the Feb. 16 Village
Board meeting and then referred it to the
Plan Commission. The commission opted to
the send the matter back to the Village
Board.
During the June 1 Village Board meeting, Director of Community Development
Matt Carran said village staff presented
options for reducing the required lot size
while requiring approval of neighbors
before the village would allow the raising
of chickens at a property.
The neighborhood consent (provision)
gave us a lot of concern but we put it in the
draft ordinance to see what the review
was, Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald
said toward the end of the meeting.
Carran said the the Plan Commission
questioned if there was a need to amend
the existing ordinance, sending the matter
back to the Village Board.
Carran then presented the board with
options for how many properties would be
eligible to raise chickens, depending on
the allowable lot size. According to the
information from Carran, there are 51
properties where chickens could be raised
under the current zoning ordinance, compared with 783 properties if the site

requirement was reduced to an acre, and

just under 4,000 properties where raising
chickens would be allowed if the allowable
property size was a half acre.
The issue was first brought to the board
by Trustee Chris Smolik.
Its not a farm animal, its more a
domestic animal like a dog or a cat thats
very docile, very friendly, Smolik said.
He added that most people who want
chicken will invest in hundreds if not thousands of dollars in coops and equipment.
Theyre going to be well thought out of
what theyre going to be doing and theyre
going to be doing it because they want to
live a more sustainable, organic lifestyle.
Smolik said the village should regulate
chickens similar to how domestic animals
are regulated. He added that owners will
take care of the chickens and that allowing
chickens to be raised in more areas could
open up more enterprise in the village as
pet stores and feed store would sell products for chicken owners.
I truly believe that giving more rights
to the residents will open that up, will open
up that enterprise for people, Smolik said.
Smolik added that chickens should be
treated the same way that dogs and cats
are regulated and that he opposed neighborhood consent for a person to own
chickens, as that would pit neighbor
against neighbor.
Village President Joe Helm said he was
concerned that we arent simply generating another bureaucratic enforcement obligation which is going to cost money. We
dont need that.
Helm also said he was concerned with
what would be needed to be done in the

Teachers students order shirts as part of relay event

It can be a smile, a medical breakthrough or kind gesture. But at May 29s
Relay For Life event, hope looked like
pink tie-dye, and the person who was to
proudly wear the T-shirt never knew it was
coming.
Students of Healthcare Academy
Coordinator and cancer survivor Jennifer
Tarcin wanted to surprise their beloved
teacher and make her cry, and they
knocked it out of the park on both accounts.
She goes above and beyond. She
does so much work in school and she
always puts us first, said Emily Jacobs. It
was nice to put her first for a change.
The plan was to present Tarcin with pink
tie-dye Team Tarcin shirts on Thursday. But
Jacobs had to design them, take down sizes
and order the shirts without Tarcin finding
out. Several teenagers had to keep the
entire plot a secret along with Tarcins
Healthcare Academy teaching partners,
Dana Kopatich and Beth Larson, for three
weeks.
I was really worried somebody was
going to say something, Jacobs said.
Nobody did.
In came the box of shirts at Thursdays
Healthcare Academy Capstone class, and
out came the shirts, followed by tears. Ben
Peterson ran to get a box of tissues.
I had no idea. It was a complete surprise, Tarcin said. They knew Id lose it,
and I didnt disappoint.
It was really sweet. She cried, said
Heloise Cheruvalath.
Students wore their shirts to school on
Friday, but Tarcin didnt know so many students had them. As soon as she came
around a corner and see someone decked

students. Photo courtesy of School
District of Menomonee Falls
out in the pink tie-dye, shed lose it again.
It was fun to see everybody come
together to support Mrs. Tarcin, Jacobs
said.
Tarcin did know she was to be the featured speaker at the moving luminary ceremony later in the evening. Cheruvalath
asked her well ahead of time.
She was wary of speaking but she was
very eager to share her experiences,
Cheruvalath said. She was touched.

case where a chicken area wasnt well

kept and the village needed to take action
to have them removed.
Village Attorney Michael Morse later
said that in the cases of pets who are creating problems in a neighborhood, the current process involves the police chief determining that a pet is a nuisance and giving
a 30-day period to address the problem
before the matter is referred to Morse and
a citation is issued.
Fitzgerald said there was a situation
involving a property owner who raised
chickens, but the chickens were maybe
the least of the issues related that property.
Fitzgerald said the process for the village taking action on that situation was
approximately six months, while adding
the condition of the property was the overall issue for the village taking action.
Morse then added that added that

while village staff looked at ordinances

from 15 communities for comparison, not
all of them regulated through zoning
restrictions but instead relied on ordinances which regulated dogs and cats.
Morse said zoning ordinances are a more
cumbersome process and can be more
expensive for the property owner. By comparison, the village could regulate chickens through the provision or the ordinances
dealing with police powers code.
The bottom line is that might be an
easier process, Fitzgerald said.
Helm suggested changes to ordinances
regulating chickens through the police
powers provision that addresses nuisances.
The board agreed to have village staff
draft an ordinance regulating chickens
through the police powers/nuisance provision of the village code. The draft will be
reviewed by the General Government
Committee.

Softball: Germantown qualifies

for state tournament
The Germantown girls softball team
qualified for the state tournament for the
third time in three years, as the Warhawks
beat Divine Savior Holy Angels (DSHA) 31 in the sectional final at Homestead.
The teams were tied 1-1 in the fifth
inning when Carly Szada hit a double.
Szada then scored on a triple by Emily
Doran. Doran then scored on a error as
Germantown took a 3-1 lead with two outs.
The rally came after DSHA threatened to
take the lead in the top of the inning, as
they had runners on second and third with
one out.
Germantown pitcher Michelle Moore
the allowed only one hit the last two innings
to secure the victory for Germantown.
We told them, weve been there,

weve done this, its another softball game,

Germantown Co-Coach Kurt Raguse said
of his teams early deficit. Obviously, we
know better. But if you can convince yourself of that, its a step in the right direction.
Raguse said cited the key behind getting to the state tournament for three years.
Its great kids, its a good summer program, its kids playing the game all the
time, Raguse said. We have that good
organization behind us, we have kids who
are dedicated to the game.
Germantown will open the state tournament with a game against DeForest at 9
a.m. June 11. The tournament will be held at
the UW-Madison Goodman Diamond.
In another sectional final June 4,
Menomonee Falls lost at Watertown, 8-2.

I was born on June 14, 1777. I am more than just cloth shaped into a design. I am the
refuge of the worlds oppressed people. I am the silent sentinel of
freedom. I am the emblem of the greatest sovereign nation on
earth. I am the inspiration for which American patriots gave
their lives and fortunes. I have led your sons and
daughters into battle from Valley Forge to the bloody
ridges of Vietnam to the sands of the Persian Gulf. I
walk in silence with each of your honored dead, to
their final resting place beneath the silent white
crosses, row upon row. I have flown through peace
and war, strife and prosperity, and amidst it all I had
ben respected. My red stripessymbolize the blood
spilled in the defense of this glorious nation. My
white stripessignify the burning tears shed by
Americans who lost their sons and daughters. My
starsclustered together, unify the 50 states as one,
for God and country. "Old Glory" is my nickname
and proudly I wave on high. Honor me, respect me,
defend me with your lives and your fortunes. Never
let my enemies tear me down from my lofty

Tip of the Week: Keep your pet lean. Pets that are overweight are at risk for a myriad of health issues. Obesity
is the number one nutritional disease seen in pets currently and studies have shown that being overweight or obese
can shorten a dog or cats life span by as much as two years. Why? Being overweight or obese puts your pet at risk
for joint disease, heart disease and diabetes, among other things.

JACKSON CONCRETE
Wants to Help You

Save Your Concrete Investments!

As a Wisconsin homeowner, you are
required to perform regular preventative maintenance in order to preserve the beauty and value of your
home: You seal your windows, stain
your wooden exteriors, and wax
your vehicles. Your concrete driveways are no exception.
The salt and de-icers that are used to
protect you from slippery conditions
can do significant damage to your
concrete.
** New concrete surfaces MUST be
sealed with a water repellant concrete hardener/sealer for the first 3
years.
** Old concrete and really old concrete has a better chance of surviving
the winter without damage if it is
sealed every other year or as the sur-

face sealer shows wear.

If you have a concrete driveway and
are unsure if its protected please call
and one of our associates will be
more than happy to speak with you.
(262) 335-2321
When the bitter cold and snow finally begin to disappear, the last thing
you want to have to do is repair the
approach to your familys home.
See and purchase all your concrete
supplies at our showroom.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM

Statewide Juneteenth activities

The following is a partial listing of
Juneteenth events occurring statewide.
Milwaukee (information taken
from the Northcott Neighborhood
House Web site): Juneteenth celebrations will be taking place nationwide,
including Milwaukee. Local activities are
organized
by
the
Northcott
Neighborhood House and have been held
for several decades. Among activities during the day will be a parade, local African
dance groups, food games, exhibits and

more.
For more information call Northcott
Neighborhood House at (414) 372-3770.
Appleton (information taken
from the appleton.org Web site):
Appletons sixth Annual Juneteenth
Celebration will be held on Sunday, June
14, 2015 from noon - 6 p.m. at City Park,
500 E Franklin St., Appleton. Juneteenth
marks the official end of slavery in the
United States.
On June 19, 1865, the last slaves in

Texas were finally told they were free - a

full two and half years after Abraham
Lincoln issued the Emancipation
Proclamation. This year is the 150th
Anniversary year of Juneteenth in this
country.
Juneteenth Appleton features educational opportunities, music, dancing, food,
retail vendors, non-profit, business and
informational booths and the popular
Childrens Village. Juneteenth 2015 is presented by African Heritage, Inc. in collab-

The history of Juneteenth

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, is
the name given to emancipation day by
African-Americans in Texas. On that day
in 1865 Union Major-General Gordon
Granger read General Orders, No.3 to
the people of Galveston. It stated:
"The people of Texas are informed
that, in accordance with a proclamation
from the Executive of the United States,
all slaves are free. This involves an
absolute equality of personal rights and
rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection
heretofore existing between them
becomes that between employer and
hired labor. The freedmen are advised to
remain quietly at their present homes and
work for wages. They are informed that
they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere."

Large celebrations on June 19 began

in 1866 and continued regularly into the
early 20th century. The AfricanAmericans treated this day like the Fourth
of July and the celebrations contained
similar events. In the early days, the celebration included a prayer service, speakers with inspirational messages, reading
of the emancipation proclamation, stories
from former slaves, food, red soda water,
games, rodeos and dances.
The celebration of June 19 as emancipation day spread from Texas to the
neighboring states of Louisiana, Arkansas
and Oklahoma. It has also appeared in
Alabama, Florida, and California as
African-American Texans migrated.
In many parts of Texas, ex-slaves purchased land, or "emancipation grounds,"
for the Juneteenth gathering. Examples
include: Emancipation Park in Houston,
purchased in 1872; what is now Booker

Celebration of Juneteenth declined
during World War II but revived in 1950
at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas.
Interest and participation fell away during the late 1950's and 1960's as attention focused on expansion of freedom for
African-Americans. In the 1970's
Juneteenth revived in some communities.
For example, in Austin the Juneteenth celebration returned in 1976 after a 25
year hiatus.

Archives Commission Web site.
