INTRODUCTION AutoCAD
TUTORIALS
INTRODUCTION
The term CAD (Computer Aided Design) applies to a wide range of programs that allow the
user to created drawings, plans, and designs electronically. AutoCAD is one such program
and it main claim to fame is that it is relatively easy to use, it is very comprehensive in its
ability to create 2D and some 3D drawings, and it is very popular. Seventy percent of the
CAD users in the world use AutoCAD.
1. LIMITS
Limits command is used to set size of screen.(Figure 1.1)
Procedure to set limits of drawing screen by 500,500.
Command:
LIMITS Enter
{Invoke limits command}
Specify lower left corner or [ON/OFF] <0.0000,0.0000>:
0,0 Enter
Specify upper right corner <420.0000,297.0000>: 500,500 Enter
Command:
Z Enter
{Invoke Zoom command}
Specify corner of window, <real time>:
A Enter {Invoke All option}
Note:

Upper right corner depends upon size of drawing.

To zoom (Z) screen within limits all [A] option is used.

Fig. 1.1

2. UNITS
Units command is used to set units of drawing.
To invoke units command type UNITS on command window and press Enter.
Drawings units dialogue box appears on screen. (Figure 1.2)
Decimal
Decimal Unit format is used to create drawing in millimeter, centimeter,
decimeter, meter, hectometer, decameter and kilometer.
One unit can be working at a time i.e. object can be drawn either millimeter
or centimeter or any other decimal unit.

INTRODUCTION AutoCAD
TUTORIALS

If sizes in drawing are shown in two units then unit conversion is

performed. For example if sizes are display on drawing in millimeters and
centimeters and sizes are entered in millimeters in command window then
enter centimeters in millimeters bu multiplying factor of 10. If sizes entered
in command window in centimeters then all the millimeter sizes are entered
by multiplying factor of 0.1.

11.1 Unit Coordinate System
UCS (User coordinate system) used in 2D drafting is WCS (World Coordinate System)
where X is horizontal and Y is vertical. All drawings in 2D are created in single face i.e. top
face. In 3D drafting addition of Z axis endow with two more faces (side face and front face)
thus depending upon type of face UCS need to be transformed.

Fig. 11.1

Direction of X and Y axis illustrate the type of face. Interchanging direction of X and Y axis
does not change face however Z axis changes from positive to negative direction or vice
versa but lie in the same straight line.
i.

Top Face: In top face X and Y axis lie along the edges of side seen from top. If Z
axis is along vertical line (upward or down ward) there is always top face.

ii.

Right Face:

In right face X and Y axis lie along the edges of side seen from right.
