5-in. Round-Mandrel Slip Joint
The 5-in. Round-Mandrel Slip Joint requires assembly drawing 614.52000.
SCOPE

This procedure is applied to ensure the operational readiness of the equipment before
mobilization to location.
Note Make sure you have a maintenance status sheet, tool dressing sheet, and the
appropriate assembly drawing at your work station before beginning the job. Check the
maintenance status sheet for pre-repair instructions, and proceed as instructed.
The locking coupling (9) is used to lock the slip joint in the collapsed position. When
collapsed the tool still maintains full tensile rating. Therefore, the string can be picked up
through the coupling.
Prior to running in the hole, back off the set screws (27) and rotate the locking coupling
(9) upward and shoulder firmly with 500 ft-lb onto the locking nipple (8). Retighten the
set screws (27).

7. Remove the sealing mandrel (6) from the inner sealing connector (2).
8. Reposition the tool in the vise, gripping on the upper sealing adapter (3).
9. Remove the slotted case (5) from the upper sealing adapter (3). Remove the torque
keys (4) when the slotted case (5) clears the upper sealing mandrel (1).
10. Slide the upper sealing mandrel (1) and the inner sealing connector (2) through the
upper sealing adapter (3).
11. Remove the upper sealing adapter (3) from the vise, and place the inner sealing
connector (2) flats in the vise.
12. Remove the upper sealing mandrel (1) from the inner sealing connector (2).
13. Remove all o-rings, backups, and wipers.
14. Clean all parts thoroughly and allow to dry.
15. Inspect all parts for wear or damage, and replace as necessary.
HOLD POINT 1 Service tool component parts should only be inspected and released for
reassembly by named individuals who have been designated competent in this task by the
local operational management. Parts should not be re-used unless explicitly authorized by
such individuals. Such authorization must be recorded on the tool Quality Control Sheet.

Assembly
To assemble the 5-in. Round Mandrel Slip Joint in the shop:

HSE

Ensure that safety glasses, gloves, steel-toed shoes and hard hats (if required) are worn.
Review the appropriate Job Safety Analysis (JSA) forms before commencing the work.
Ensure the hand tools are in good condition and the work area is free of trips and hazards.
Maintain good housekeeping standards in the work area at all times.
Ensure proper lifting techniques are utilized, and get help if necessary.
1. Install back seals, new wipers, and new o-rings. Record on the Tool Dressing Sheet.
2. Place the inner sealing connector (2) in the vise ensuring that the vise jaws are set on
the flat non-sealing area. Lightly coat all o-rings, seals, and wipers with grease.
3. Slide the upper sealing mandrel (1) through the inner sealing connector (2) starting at
the threaded end of the sealing connector. Leave the upper sealing mandrel flush with
the end of the sealing connector.
4. Mate the lifting/sealing mandrel lugs (6) and the upper sealing mandrel lugs (1).
5. Make up the inner sealing connector (2) and the lifting/sealing mandrel (1). Tighten to
500 ft-lb with a 36 in. wrench.
Note Fully engage the lugs of the lifting sealing mandrel (6) and the upper sealing
mandrel (1) before make up of threads.
The port in the lifting/sealing mandrel (6) should be approximately 1/8 in. off the threaded
edge of the inner sealing connector (2) when tightened.
6. Slide the upper sealing adapter (3), pin first, onto the upper sealing mandrel (1) until it
makes contact with the inner sealing connector (2).
Note

O-ring 70.34040 should be installed for pressure test purposes.

Place enough grease in the upper sealing adapter (3) to pack off the void space when the
sealing upper mandrel (1) is installed.
7. Install the torque keys (4) on the upper sealing mandrel (1) with the tapered ends
pointed toward the top of the tool.
8. Align the slotted case (5) and the torque keys (4). Slide the slotted case over the upper
sealing mandrel (1). Make up the slotted case into the upper sealing adapter (3).
9. Install the sealing case (7) onto the upper sealing adapter (3) by sliding it over the
lifting sealing mandrel (6).
Note

10. Install the locking sealing nipple (8) by sliding onto the lifting/sealing mandrel (6) and
make up with the sealing case (7).
Note Watch the wiper (21) to ensure it is not damaged by thread or thread undercut
during installation of the locking sealing nipple (8).
11. Install the locking coupling (9), handtight only, onto the locking sealing nipple (8).
12. Install the bottom adapter (10) onto the lifting sealing mandrel (6).
13. Make up the locking coupling (9) onto the bottom adapter leaving half the threads still
engaged with the locking sealing nipple (8).
Note The locking coupling (9) is used to lock the slip joint in the collapsed position.
When collapsed the tool still maintains full tensile rating. Therefore, the string can be
picked up through the coupling.
Prior to running in the hole, back off the set screws (27) and rotate the locking coupling
(9) upward and shoulder firmly with 500 ft-lb onto the locking nipple (8). Retighten the
set screws (27).
14. Install test adapters to the bottom adapter (10) and the slotted case (5).
15. Send tool to pressure testing.

Pressure Test
HSE

Ensure all safety precautions are taken prior to beginning any pressure testing. These
precautions should include the erection of signs and barriers, PA announcements, removal of
non-essential personnel, and the use of work permits. Review JSAs, and never test alone.

HOLD POINT 2 Service tool pressure tests can only be verified by named individuals
who have been designated competent in this task by the local operational management.
Such verification must be recorded on the tool Quality Control Sheet.
1. Rig the pump up to a test adapter, and plug the other.
2. Apply 5,000 psi to the ID of the tool. Hold for 5 minutes (16,500 psi for
manufacturing pressure testing).
Note

The tool should be collapsed and the locking coupling (9) engaged.

3. Bleed all pressures.

4. Remove the pump and fittings from the test adapters.

5. Remove the set screws (27) from the locking coupling (9) if installed. Make up the
locking coupling (9) into the uppermost position on the locking/sealing nipple (8).
Note

Hand-tighten the locking coupling.

6. Install three NPT plugs in the ports of the sealing case (7).
7. Rig up the pump to the remaining NPT port in the sealing case (7).
8. Slowly apply pressure to the NPT port until the tool fully extends. Stop pressurizing
when pressure increases rapidly.
Note The tool will extend 60 in. Do not exceed the maximum pressure of 15,000 psi.
Installation of o-ring 70.34040 is needed for extending the tool with pressure, otherwise
the tool must manually be extended.
9. Bleed all pressures.
10. Remove the pump, fittings, and NPT plugs from the sealing case ports (7).
11. Rig up the pump to a test adapter, and plug the other test adapter.
12. Apply 5,000 psi to the ID of the tool. Hold for 5 minutes (16,500 psi for
manufacturing pressure testing).
13. Bleed all pressures.
14. Remove the pump, fittings, and plugs from the tool.
15. Manually collapse the slip joint.
16. Make up locking coupling (9) onto the bottom adapter (10) leaving half the threads
still engaged with the locking/sealing nipple (8).
17. Install set screws (27).

Field Maintenance
Redress of the tool requires complete disassembly. Refer to the Disassembly and
Assembly instructions.
