PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
The annual membership meeting was held on Tuesday,
May 12th at Stenwood Elementary School. The new
officers were elected for 2015-2016. We would like to
thank Kathy Arpa for her many years of service, and
welcome Iman Butler to the Board as the new Director.
During the meeting, we also gave out our annual
scholarship to a very deserving high school senior. This
is always a personal highlight of the year for me.

VDOT STILL MOVING ON I-66

EXPANSION PLANS
Providence Supervisor Linda Smyth held a community
meeting on May 11 at which VDOT representatives
provided an update on the I-66 expansion plans. The
update included the probable taking of fewer properties
in the DL area for the expansion and some other
relatively minor changes.
Supervisor Smyth stated that further community
meetings should be held in addition to the planned
public hearings. It was clear from the VDOT
presentation and attendee response to the presentation
that much more needs to be done to correct major
deficiencies in the plan. These deficiencies were
presented in the March/April edition of The Lantern.
Public input remains critical in pursuing these
corrections. Plan updates and information are available
on TRANSFORM66.ORG The next public hearing
closest to DLW is on May 28 at Oakton High School
from 5:30-9:00PM. DLW residents are urged to attend
if they can and provide comments. Residents are also
urged to submit comments and express concerns to our
elected officials. They are listening.

CALL TO ACTION FROM LOCAL

CONCERNED CITIZEN REGARDING
TRANSURBAN
Transurban is NOT doing anything for our
communities. Their lexus lanes are NOT for the
masses and don't solve congestion problems on 495 or
95 and they will only make congestion worse on I66
ouside the beltway as in that case they are actually taking
an existing lane reducing public rush hour lanes from 4
to 3. This is a business plan that feeds on congestion vs
fixes congestion and it is costing all of us. Tell Govenor
McAuliffe: "No More private-owned express lanes/tolls
in Virginia." The devastating impacts to Falls Church,
Dunn Loring, Merrifield and Vienna are for towering
double-wide ramps and flyover ramps to connect to
Transurban's 495 Express Lanes.
VDOT could save a billion dollars by starting/stopping
the project at 123 and with five lanes have seamless
merging to Nutley Metro, existing roads I66, 495, and
existing 495 ezpass lanes. Reducing price for project
eliminates need for Transurban investment so that
project could be for express lanes (HOV2 and rapid
bus) for all commuters -- no tolls -- also eliminates 75
year lease which keeps control in Virginia of
opportunities to continuously solving and evolving
transportation in the corridor.
99% of all new income is going to the top 1%, and the
grotesque level of wealth and income inequality today is
worse than at any time since the late 1920s. The people
at the top are grabbing all the new wealth and income
for themselves, and the rest of America is being
squeezed and left behind. In Virginia, a foreign investor
is being allowed to squeeze commuters, the majority of
whom work for the federal government, for the next 75
years.
