Energy Crisis
!

The world is facing a major energy and fuel crisis these days.

!
!
!

We are expected to run out of oil, coal and gas in 35, 107 and 37 years
respectively.
Prices of oil, coal and gas will rise dramatically during the next few years.

!
!

We need to find new sources of energy such as renewable energy.

Thesis objective
!

Introduction to the need of Biofuels

!
!

Substituting oil with an alternative fuel.

!
!

Selecting biofuels that can be used in most SI engines without major modifications.

!
!

Selecting and testing different types and compositions of biofuels that are available in
Egypt.

!
!

Determining the best biofuel based on performance characteristics.

Introduction
!

Bio fuel is a source of energy extracted from living things.

!
!

Bio diesel : a type of fuel made extracted from coconut, soya beans, peanut,
sunflower and algae.

!
!

Ethanol : alcohol form of fuel extracted from rice, sugar cane, corn and
wheat.

Types of biofuel to be used

!
!
!

Ethanol produced from rice.

!
!
!
!

Ethanol produced from sugarcane.

Why rice and sugarcane?

!

Egypt is one of the highest sugar cane cultivating countries.

!
!

According to the FAO Egypt produces more than 1.5 million tons of sugarcane each year.

!
!

The condition of a dessert region facilitate the growth of sugarcane crops.

!
!

FAO stated that Egypt was the highest rice producer in the near region.

!
!

In 2001 Egypt produced more than 9.1 million tons.

All Biofuels will be tested on an SI engine for

different variables against rpm

Ethanol from rice:

E10,E20,E30,E40,E50,E60,E70,E80
ethanol from sugarcane:
E10,E20,E30,E40,E50,E60,E70,E80

!
Above e80, modifications must be done to the engine.
More widespread practice has been to add up to 20% to
gasoline by volume (E20-fuel or gasohol) to avoid the need
of engine modifications.

Modifications
!

Cold Starting

Ethanol blends have a higher latent heat of evaporation than 100% petrol and
thus ethanol blends have a poorer cold start ability in Winter.

A fuel heater is installed

Plan for Thesis 2

Choose the type of SI engine to be tested on
Provide Engine specifications
Acquire SI engine and run it
Provide a theoretical Analysis of fuels
Find a solution to the modifications needed
Provide a method to measure all performance
characteristics
