Sub: Review of DCRV Chlorine tablet addition facility -reg

Ref: DCRV no.: 015-03-15 dtd. 17/03/15

The field visit has been made for routing of piping and tank location etc.
Accordingly drawing were made and attached herewith. To find out size of pipe
to be connected and tank capacity, the following data is collected from PO
specifications, MSDS, Design manual etc.
From PO specifications: (PO 41361 / ePO678 dtd. 07/05/14; Rate: Rs. 176/- per
kg)
Trichloro- IsoCyaneric Acid (TCCA-90) tablets C3 O3 Cl3 N3
Density: 0.9 to 1.8 gm/cc
Content: 90% Cl2 and min Moisture 0.5%
PH: 2.6 to 3.2
Weight of each tablet: 200gms
From MSDS: (CAS No. 8790-1; www.rasayam.com/trichloroisocyaneric.html)
Solubility at 25C: 12g/L

Molecular Weight: 232.41

Process: Through hydrolysis, TCCA converts to Hypo-Chlorous Acid (HOCL)

From Design Manual: (71130)
1. Dosage rate: 4ppm at sea water inlet for 1,46,000m3/Hr.
2. 0.5 ppm at outlet of condenser cooling water.
3. 3000 ppm cl2 in solution line for flow 100m3/hr. 4.2 of design manual says
higher concentration of chlorine in line is avoided as it leads to release
molecular chlorine in solution line.
To maintain 4ppm at sea water inlet for flow of 146000m3/hr, Chlorine
dosage required is 584kg/hr. Having 90% Cl2 content in tablets, dosing rate is
at 649kgs/hr in form of tablets.
{4 ppm X (146X 106 kgs/hr) / 106 = 584 kgs/hr; 584kgs / 0.90 = 649kgs,
assuming Sp. Gr. of water 1.0}
As tablet solubility 12gm/ltr (at 25 oC); total flow of sea water through tablet tank
shall be 54.0m3/hr, for which size of tank connecting pipeline 80mm ID (for
velocity 3m/sec), hence 4NB pipe with ID of 94mm is being proposed.
(Assuming solubility maintains constant with tempr, relative velocity, PH, etc.)
{649X103 /12 = 54000 ltr/hr = 54.0m3/hr}
Chlorine ppm in tank connecting pipes could be 10814ppm, whereas chlorine
solution strength shall be limited to 3000 ppm only as per design manual.
However HDPE pipes for solution is proposed.
{584 kgs of cl2 :: 54000 kgs of sea water}

{584000 :: 54 X 106 == 10814 :: 106 == 10814 ppm }

For 649 kgs of chlorine dosing in form of tablets, 3245 tablets per hour are to
be consumed, whereas fabricated tank was made with capacity of 800 tablets
only. Hence minimum 4 similar tanks in parallel or large size tank are to be
provided to meet station requirement.
Total cost of one hour operation could be Rs. 1 14 224/-, whereas through
Liquid chlorine, operating cost for one hour of operation at dosing rate of
600kg/hr is Rs. 2580/-. (Rs. 4300/- per MT).
{649000 gms /200gms of each tablet == 3245 tablets; 649kgs X Rs. 176 per kg
= Rs. 1, 14,224 for hour of operation}

Similarly, to maintain 1ppm at sea water intake,

Dosing rate: 146kgs/hr Cl2 and 162 kgs/hrs in form of Cl2 tablets
Total flow through tank: 13.5m3/hr
No. Of tablets to be added: 810nos (each 200gms)
ppm in tank outlet line: 12000 (4 times of limited value 3000)
Total cost for one hour operation: Rs. 28512/- against Rs. 628/- through liquid
chlorine.

In view of above, four tanks or large size tank are to be proposed through FCN for
4ppm dosing for one hour. With one tank as fabricated, 1ppm of chlorine
dosing could be achieved with 810 tables and 12000ppm in tank outlet line for
one hour only.
