Design and Analysis

Dril-Quip's Research and
Development Department is
equipped with a sophisticated
computer network. The SU-90
Wellhead System components
have been designed and modeled
using the most advanced computer
techniques. Each wellhead
component has undergone
rigorous engineering analysis and
testing. Prototypes of each system
component have been extensively
tested to confirm that the
product meets the design criteria.
This underlines Dril-Quip's
commitment to provide advanced
technology in precision-crafted
products for the oil industry.
All Dril-Quip SU Series Unitized
Wellhead Systems are engineered
and designed in compliance
with API 6A guidelines where
applicable, and can be supplied in
compliance with European Union
Explosive Atmospheres Directive
(ATEX) and EPS regulations.
Dril-Quip SU Series Wellheads
are manufactured in accordance
with API Q1 and ISO-9001
standards and specifications.

Fire-resistant production tree designs offered in

compliance with API 6FA, API 6FB and API 6FC
SU-90 systems can be specified to operate within a
temperature range of -75 F to 350 F and up
to 15,000 psi
Field-proven performance

Casing Heads
The SU-90 Platform Wellhead System is
available in a single or multiple BOP stack
configuration. Casing heads are designed to
provide technical and operational flexibility
without sacrificing the pressure-containing or
load-carrying capacity of the system.
The low pressure SU-90 Casing Head can
be equipped with an adjustment ring for
adjusting tension or height as required on the
primary conductor string.
The high-pressure wellhead can be landed,
adjusted, locked and sealed inside the
casing head.
The low-pressure casing head is run on a
simple drill pipe or full-bore installation tool
and can be supplied with customer-specified
side outlets and top connections.

Features
Low profile, compact design
Provision for optional circulation paths
Adjustable landing ring
External test ports allow for quick testing
of the seal assembly with or without BOP
stack in place
Threaded bottom connections in casing
head provide quick installation; no field
welding required

Casing Heads are available

in a variety of sizes:
21 1/4" 2,000 psi
20 3/4" 3,000 psi
18 5/8" 5,000 psi

Casing Head Installations

High pressure Wellheads

The high-pressure wellhead provides a
means of suspending and sealing multiple
strings of casing and tubing inside a single
wellhead using mandrel hangers.
The high-pressure SU-90 Wellhead is
designed to land in either the low-pressure
casing head or on the primary conductor
casing. In both cases the wellhead can be
adjusted for height or tension as required.
Additionally, the high-pressure wellhead can
be sealed in the casing head, if desired. Side
outlets and top connections can be supplied
to meet customer specifications.

Features
Low profile, compact design
Provision for optional circulation paths
Adjustable landing ring
External test ports allow for quick
testing of the seal assembly with or
without BOP stack in place
Interfaces with tubing hanger with a
metal-to-metal seal
Available with a threaded bottom
connection in order to provide quick
installation; no field welding required

Mandrel Type
Casing Hangers
The SU-90 Unitized Wellhead Systems utilize
mandrel type casing hangers. These casing
hangers incorporate field-proven subsea technology for landing, sealing and locking casing
hangers to the wellhead without external
intervention. These operations are performed
through the BOP stack.

Features
High load-carrying, pressurecontaining capacity
Designed for a radially preloaded
metal-to-metal sealing system on the
annulus seal assembly
Large flow-by areas during running
and cementing
Locks the casing hanger automatically to
the wellhead

and Wear Bushings
The SU-90 Nominal Bore Protector and Wear
Bushing protect the wellhead ID during
the drilling operation. The Bore Protector is
retained into the wellhead and starter head
with a friction bind O-ring seal. The Wear
Bushing is locked down to the seal assembly
with 4 J-lugs mated to slots on the OD of the
seal assembly torque nut.

Features

Seal Assemblies

Casing Head Seal Assembly

The SU-90 Seal Assembly incorporates a metalto-metal sealing system that was developed for,
and field-proven in, Dril-Quips SS-15 Subsea
Wellhead System. Metal-to-metal seals located
on the seal assembly ID and OD are driven
over a radial surface to energize the annulus
seal. The sealing system is radially preloaded.
Each seal assembly has two sealing systems for
redundancy and to allow testing of the annulus
seal from outside the casing head or wellhead.

Features
Field-proven, dual metal-to-metal seals
Simple remote installation
Interchangeable seal assemblies fit all casing
hangers within a given wellhead size
High pressure-containing capacity

Seal Assemblies are weight-set, pressure-assisted

Tubing Hanger
The SU-90 Tubing Hanger can be installed
on top of the production casing hanger
or can be nested inside the production
casing hanger. The SU-90 Tubing Hanger
accommodates either single-string or multistring tubing completions.

Features
Simple installation
High-load, high-pressure capacity
Designed for radial-set metal-to-metal seal
Large flow-by areas
Tubing hangers can be landed on top of or

Fire-resistant bonnet design

The 6FA model is available for Dril-Quip
split gate valves

Bonnet Features
The Valve is designed
so the stem-to-bonnet
metal-to-metal backseat
will engage in a fire. This
is to eliminate the possibility of the packing
burning out and creating
a new fuel source for
the fire. All other components are designed to
withstand the half-hour
burn and cooldown
without leaking. The
pressurized valve must
not show any significant
leakage during the test.
The Metal-to-Metal DX Bonnet Seal is
pressure energized and will not leak due
to high temperatures.
A Nut Shroud is added to protect the bonnet
bolting from direct flame.
A Eutectic Ring is positioned above the upper
bearing face and will melt in the event of a
fire, or if the temperature exceeds 250F. If this
occurs, valve body pressure forces the stem
upward and a metal-to-metal backseat seal is
engaged. This seal isolates the valve bore and
body pressure from the stem packing.
A Spring Cartridge is used to engage the stems
backseat when the Eutectic Ring has melted
and there is no or low body pressure in the
gate valve.
