editorial
The last twelve months have been witness to a number of natural calamities
around the world, the floods in Pakistan, the devastating hurricane in
Vanuatu Islands, the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Nepal. The conflict in
Syria is now in its 4th year where over 200,000 lives have been lost
since the conflict began four years ago and a staggering 11 million
people have been forced to flee their homes and three million
children are no longer in school.
Last year the world focused on the Gaza conflict where according to
the UN 2,104 lives were lost, 10,224 people suffered injury (one third of
which were children), a total of 475,000 people were internally displaced.
The efforts to rebuild and rehabilitate by charity organisations that appealed
on Channel S last year continue on to this day. The commendable efforts of
the charity organisations have only been possible due to the generosity that
manifested itself during the month of Ramadan and continued all year long.

Ramadan spirit can heal
our fractured world................................................. 34
This Ramadan will be another opportunity for Muslims around the world to
pause and reflect on the world around us and how we can unite and collectively
ease the difficulties faced by millions. It will be opportunity to experience
hunger during dry and hot days and think of those for whom the feeling of
hunger lingers all year round and the climate adds to the harsh conditions
whether its in the height of summer or in the depth of winter.
Channel S also enters into its 11th year of broadcast. Over the last 9 of those
11 years, Channel S has maintained its position as the Channel of choice when
it comes to charity during the month of Ramadan. Mosques, educational
establishments and international charities continue to make Channel S their
first choice to reach out to the communities in Britain, Europe and the United
States.
Ramadan is the month of giving and mercy, and in it Allah blesses the believers
with forgiveness and being saved from Hellfire. Therefore, whoever is merciful
and giving in Ramadan, Allah will be even more Merciful and Giving, and will
bestow upon him countless bounties and blessings.
Inshallah let us all ask that Allah Azzawajal to bless us with the ability to reap
maximum reward this month and the ability to share from the endless bounties
that He the Almighty has bestowed upon us.

Brief History
Stepney Shahjalal Mosque was established in 1980 by the community elders and
youth in the corner of the Shandy Park in a Caretaker's Hut. Initially there were
facilities to accommodate approximately 40-50 worshippers. In late eighties, due
to the increasing demand, Tower Hamlets Council granted permission to extend
prayer facilities by installing a portable building. Since then further extensions have
been built to accommodate increasing worshippers. By 2002 with the support of
community leaders and worshippers, the land for the Mosque was purchased from
Tower Hamlets Council. In 2005, additional portable buildings were installed to
accommodate approximately 800 worshippers inside the Mosque, but approximately
500-700 worshippers still pray outside in the park every Jummah come rain or shine.
In 2010, full planning permission was granted to build a new Mosque large enough
to accommodate more than 3000 people.

In 1993, a community in Nottingham, moved by the devastation of the Bosnian war,
sprang into action. A small group of volunteers began collecting money, clothes and
medicine for the people of Bosnia.
Muslim Hands, an international aid agency and NGO, grew from this grass roots
movement and since these first efforts, we have responded to countless more
emergencies, as well as establishing long term projects such as schools, healthcare
clinics and livelihood programmes worldwide. We are working in over 50 countries
and have field offices in over 30 of these. By working closely with our partners
and offices on the ground, we are able to distribute aid in an effective, efficient,
transparent and wholly accountable manner and to make a lasting difference to the
communities we work with.

Muslim Charity was established in 1999 with a group of volunteers and today we
are partners with United Nations (UNRWA). We have always taken initiatives with
a diverse range of projects which have been beneficial to communities around the
world. We do not just deliver our projects but work for the dignity of the communities,
and this commitment has been unshakable. To achieve our goals we have got a strong
network of partners, which are local organisations of the communities we work for.
Following this structure, we try and reach out at the root cause and try to mitigate it.
We work majorly for Maternal Health, Women Livelihood, Water, Orphans and, last

Brief History
The early Muslims settled in York about 40 years ago. They began their worship in
a house, but as the numbers grew, a Mosque and Islamic Centre was established in
Bull Lane in 1982. One of the beauties of the Muslim community in York is that it
is comprised of many different nationalities praying as one jamaat. Our numbers
have grown significantly over the last decade, and the current facilities for up to four
hundred worshippers are insufficient.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
A total of 1.5 million is required for completion of the building project. To preserve
the planning permission, we have divided the project in two phases. Phase 1, will
involve construction of water tight building with doors, windows and electrics. The
building will be used for large congregations like Friday and Eid Prayers. The cost of
Phase 1 is 738,000 and the Building Contractor to build Phase 1 has been chosen.
The construction work is planned to commence in first week of May 2015, inshaAllah.
Future Plan
Fundraising for Phase 1 is well underway, and we have raised over 600,000 so far.
So we are looking to raise remaining 138,000 for the completion of this phase.
Hence, we are reaching out to our brothers and sisters, supporters and friends within
the UK and internationally to help us raise the remaining amount.
With Phase 1, we will have basic facility in the form of a completely built structure
to accommodate the growing numbers of worshipers. This basic facility will also be
a mean to replace our temporary Portacabin structure, which accommodates 200
people regularly. This structure has gone past its recommended usage life and needs
replacing urgently.

Orphans in Need is a charitable organisation, which was established in order to help
some of the worlds most vulnerable and needy people. Like many charities, Orphans
in Need is committed to the alleviation of all forms of poverty and deprivation, in
all parts of the globe. However, the organisations primary focus is on orphans and
widows; often the weakest members of any society, and the most affected by the
scourge of poverty.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
Currently Orphans in Need is instigating, running or financing a number of poverty
alleviation projects in Asia and Africa. Much of this work is centred on orphan
sponsorship, the construction of orphanages as well as maintenance of widows
and their families. We currently support over 9,000 children through our orphan
sponsorship programme.
Future Plans
Orphans in Need is running three key projects:
1) Orphan sponsorship For just 1 a day (30 a month) you can ensure that a
destitute orphan child receives secure shelter, food, medical care and an education.
2) Orphans Home Kashmir With our Delhi Orphans Village established we have
already made plans for the next home in our network. Kashmir is one of the worlds
most impoverished countries torn apart by war, poverty and personal hardship.
Building a high quality Centre of Excellence is a huge challenge but one in which we
are confident of success please donate as much as you can.
3) Widow Food Parcels For just a 30, you can ensure that a widow and her family
receive enough food to sustain them for an entire month. With a regular payment,
you can ensure they receive a pack in Ramadan and every month.

in 2010 with the mission of worldwide free Quran distribution. Through our various
distribution programmes and educational seminars, we endeavor to create Islamic
awareness by spreading the authentic word of Allah to help eradicate misconceptions
and superstitions about Islam that stem from a lack of knowledge.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
Alhamdulillah, Al Quran Academy London has already distributed nearly half a million
copies of the Holy Quran with simple Bengali translation in the Bengali speaking
zone of Bangladesh, India and expatriates in Europe, America, Canada, Australia,
Malayasia and Middle East. We have taken steps to extend our distribution of the
Holy Quran with English translation to countries across the western hemisphere and
the Nepali translation in Nepal. We are looking into the possibility of Hindi and Urdu
translations to include.
Charities (Sadaqah) shall go to the poor, the
needy, the workers who collect them, the new
converts, to free the slaves, to those burdened
by sudden expenses, in the cause of Allah, and

Alongside our existing projects such as our popular Friends of Quran scheme, we
have also devised an innovative project called LightHouse. This project allows our
donors (hailing from Bangladesh) to take responsibility for Quran distribution for their
own union (home town), thereby making the process faster and more personalised.
Alhamdulillah, this project has been very well received and gains popularity by the
day.
Al Quran Academy London distributes free Quran amongst GPA 5 achieving students,
public libraries, media, prisoners, intellectuals and various professionals around the
country.
The sponsorship cost of one copy of the Holy Quran is only 2. You can sponsor
2000 copies for your Union, or 500 copies for your parents, or however many you
are capable of sponsoring. We offer the option of printing the details of the donor/
person or organisation of choice on the front page of the sponsored copies (minimum

Brief History
Muslim Aid is a relief and development agency set up in the United Kingdom in 1985
to provide humanitarian assistance to disaster affected countries and to help poor
and vulnerable communities.
Over the last 29 years, Muslim Aid has delivered services in over 70 countries
worldwide.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
At Muslim Aid, our prime focus has always been on delivering aid in the most effective
way, and in recent years, we have extended our aim to encourage long-term support
to enable people to rebuild their lives in the wake of a conflict or natural disaster.
In 2014, we responded to the plight of the people in conflict-affected areas such as
Gaza and Syria by providing essential items such as food and hygiene kits to reduce
the chance of spreading disease.
2014 was mired with natural disasters such as the South Asia floods. Muslim Aid
responded rapidly with food and medical supplies for India and Pakistan as well
as setting up a mobile health clinic. In addition to responding to emergency causes
with immediate needs, we have also aimed to enable people to live independent,
self-sufficient lives, with long-term vision to alleviate poverty and inequality. Our
long-term projects include education, healthcare, water and sanitation programmes.
We also continued to implement our specialised programmes to serve people living
in some of the most impoverished communities in the world. Over 5,500 children
benefitted from our one-to-one child support programme in 17 countries. Our
Ramadan and Qurbani programme benefitted over 431,000 people around the
world.
On a local level, Muslim Aid established its UK Development department in 2011
to serve the UKs most needy and has expanded its efforts annually ever since.
The programme has particular focus on marginalised and vulnerable groups within
society such as the unemployed youth, the elderly and homeless during the harsh
winter months, as well as women and children exposed to violence at home. As a
result, Muslim Aids work in the UK benefitted over 7,800 people in 2014 alone.

The East London Mosque has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the
largest Muslim institutions in Europe. Founded in 1910 as the London Mosque Fund,
it was renamed the East London Mosque when three houses were purchased in 1910
in Commercial Road. In 1975, it had to relocate to Whitechapel Road, then in 1985,
the distinctive red-brick Mosque opened to the world. At first it seemed generously
spacious, but before long it began to overflow and there was hardly room for its
growing number of projects. The East London Mosque ran a successful campaign to
acquire adjoining land in 1999, then in 2001, HRH Prince Charles and HRH Prince
Mohamed al-Faisal launched the project to build the London Muslim Centre which
opened to great acclaim in June 2004. It wasnt long before congregations and
projects reached capacity, so in 2009, the next phase of development of the East
London Mosque commenced with the building of the nine-storey Maryam Centre.
Focused on delivering substantial facilities for women and an accessible visitor centre,
it opened in July 2013.

Since 2010, not only have we seen a major transformation in the way we provide
care, we have equally seen transformations of lives through simple or sometimes
even complex interventions by the iQra Academy Medical Team.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
We believe a better service focusing on more life changing results can be provided
for disabled children. That is why we have decided to implement the iQra Disabled
Children's Hospital which has now become the flagship project of the The iQra

Work for phase two has already started since March 2015, as pledges for five Medical
Wards have already been received. This construction will help provide much needed
specialist care and accommodation for disabled patients.
The Hope for Disabled Children (HFDC) UK Tour is in its third year running and
continues to give us renewed hope and purpose. Its strength and success is evident
due to the overwhelming support at each event by donors and patrons across the
country.
iQra International will continue to have faith in the support that is shown by CH

funds during the month of Ramadan which is needed to complete phase 2.
We give special thanks to all CH S viewers and organisers from various cities that

bank to help the local community.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
By the Grace of Allah we have completed phase 1, 2 and 3 of the project. The
construction phase is complete, along with a new 4-story building at the rear section
of the Masjid.
Future Plan
Phase 4a (in progress): Our aim is to complete all works in the following areas (i)
The basement, which includes: the wudu area, bathrooms, basement multi-purpose
hall. (ii) Ground floor, which includes: the main prayer hall, reception areas and
meeting spaces; (iii) first floor, which includes: classrooms, dedicated sisters' prayer

Along with the above doors and windows, electrical and mechanical wiring, plumbing,
lighting and heating systems; underfloor heating, and lift. We estimate this will cost
approx. 400,000.
This will enable us to start utilizing the building for prayers.
Phase 4b: This is the final part of the project, which includes: internal doors, carpets
and flooring, furniture, painting and decoration on the 3rd floor.

Newbury Park Masjid (NPICC) is a community based registered UK charity, which
began in September 2005, taking the initiative to establish a Masjid in Newbury
Park, Ilford, Essex.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
In March 2008, NPICC purchased a plot of land costing 180,000 in Oaks Lane
measuring 0.29 acres. Alhamdulillah after meeting all requirements by the local
council and gaining planning approval in 2010 construction is now well underway.
The total project cost is 730,000.
Following on from installation of the foul and surface water drainage systems, the
basement structural work is now complete with the reinforced concrete roof and
retaining walls in place, Alhamdulillah! We are now in the next stage which involves
the building of the remaining part of the Masjid.
Currently on site we have a temporary structure where we are providing facilities for
5 daily prayers, Jummah, Eid Salaah and Tarawih. We also hold weekly classes and
gatherings for both brothers and sisters.
NPICC wants not only to provide for regular congregation prayers but to be a hub
for the local community for Muslims and non-Muslims. Some further activities
include youth clubs, Sunday Football, regular community events such as BBQs and
community litter picks.
Future Plan
Our aim is to complete the construction of the Masjid by the end of the year
InshaAllah, but to ensure that we reach this target we will need your continued
support. We sincerely request your help and pray that you assist us in contributing
generously in making this vision a reality. We require a further 300,000 to complete
the project.

as a fully-fledged Islamic university complete with a reputable research portfolio. It
began in 2003 as an Islamic Seminary offering A levels with Islamic Sciences to full

the graduates of ECs Alimiyyah programme are now active Imams, teachers and
young religious and community leaders.
Progress and Ongoing Activities
ECs full and part-time, Arabic Intensive and full-time Alimiyyah programmes, are
now increasingly popular with talented young men and women, who will soon be
the leaders, teachers and imams of tomorrow. Our flexible Islamic short courses,
on campus, in other cities and countries (seminars), and online, are attended by
almost 5000 adults per year. We remain, as ever, committed to producing people of
knowledge and removing the barriers that obstruct knowledge.

Brief History
Noor Ul Islam Trust is a registered UK charity that has been running for 25 years
(formed in 1990). It provides support services to the community in East London
and beyond. As well as running a Mosque, the Trust provides educational services,
especially through our schools (pre School, full time Islamic primary school,
Madrassa and Aalimah department), which now benefits over 800 students on an
annual basis. Due to the increasing demand of our services and the existing premises
no longer being suitable, the Trust decided to develop its main sites, which were
separate buildings to have a large four storey building to house its prayer facilities
and most of its other services.
The Trust has established excellent links with the local community, local authority,
Police, faith groups and football clubs, demonstrating that a Mosque should be at
the heart of the community.

Zakah
Distribution of the Bounties of Allah
efinition of Zakah
Literally
Zakah
means
blessing,
purification, increase and goodness. It
is so called as it blesses the wealth from which
it is taken and protects it from misfortunes. Ibn
Taimiah said, The soul of one who gives Zakah is
blessed and so is his wealth.
Technically Zakah is defined as A determined
portion taken from wealth and allocated to those
deserving it, by a Quranic injunction. Sometimes
Zakah is referred to in the Holy Quran as Sadaqah
(alms). The Quran says, Of their goods take
alms, that so thou mightest purify and sanctify
them; and pray on their behalf, verily thy prayers
are a source of security for them. (Surah AlTaubah, No.9, Verse: 103). In an authentic hadith,
the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to his
Companion Mu`adh, when he was sent to Yemen
as governor, Tell them that Allah has made Zakah
obligatory for them, that it should be collected
from the rich and distributed among the poor.
10/06/2015 18:27:24
7. Zakah on Business
This is for Business Persons only. No matter what business
you are into, youve got to pay Zakat on all stock in trade.
The stock must be valued at its landed cost price. If you
have any bills receivable (sales given on credit) then you
need to add the same towards calculations.
Deduct the amounts due to your suppliers and deduct
the loans on stock on the date of calculation. Dead stock
should be calculated on scrap value or its saleable value.
Damaged stock should also be valued at its scrap value.
Be honest in the calculations, as Zakat is an insurance on
your stock directly from Allah and who better an insurer
than Him.
There is no Zakat on factory buildings or any kind of
machinery, but there is Zakat on products produced
in the factory (i.e. finished goods value). Please refer to
a competent scholar who can shed more light on your
specific issues.
8. Zakah on Partnership Firms
Zakah can be paid either by the firm or separately by the
owners. If the firm is not paying, and the partner wants to
calculate his share, he should take the amount standing
to his capital and loan account as per the last balance
sheet. Add his estimated share of profit till the date zakat
is calculated. This can only be estimated as it is difficult to
calculate the exact profit or loss between an accounting
year.
9. Zakah on Agricultural Product
Zakah is payable on all agricultural produce including
fruits, commercially grown flowers, vegetables and all
types of grains at the harvest time itself. The passing of one
year does not apply for agricultural produce. If there are
two or more crops on the same land per year, then Zakah
has to be paid as many times on the crop, irrespective of
the time.
The formula for Zakah calculation on agriculture is as
follows:
On crops dependent purely on rain water it will be 10% of
produce.
On crops not irrigated through rain water but use canal
water, tank water, bore well and open wells, the Zakah is
5% of the produce.

Healthy
Ramadan
A balanced diet
Those observing the fast should have at least two
meals a day the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) and a
meal at dusk (Iftar).
During Ramadan, our food intake should be simple
and not differ too much from normal diet. It should
contain foods from all the major food groups:
- fruit and vegetables
- bread, cereals and potatoes
- meat, fish or alternatives
Foods to avoid
- deep-fried foods such as pakoras, samosas and
fried dumplings
- high-sugar and high-fat foods including sweets
such as gulab jamun, rasgulla and balushahi
- high-fat cooked foods such as parathas, oily
curries and greasy pastries
Healthy alternatives
and figs.

Bangladeshi mishti).
It's also worth avoiding caffeine-based drinks such
as tea, coffee and cola. Caffeine is a diuretic and
stimulates faster water loss through urination.
