1. What is Midwifery?

The simplest definition of midwifery is with woman, but

truly, midwifery means different things to different people. For
many others, the midwifery model is am attitude about women
and how pregnancy and birth occur, and view that pregnancy
and birth are normal events until proven otherwise. It is an
attitude of giving and sharing information, of empowerment,
and of respecting the right of a woman and her family to
determine their own care.
Historically, midwives have always been around to help
women give birth. Before physicians, midwives were the
primary healers in their communities. They were the medicine
women of their own cultures and assisted families and women
throughout their lives. Today, midwives take care of anyone who
wishes to see them, but practice within the constraints of their
medical and legal systems.
The World Health Organization (WHO) presents us with
the following definition of the midwife.
A midwife is a person who having been regularly admitted
to a midwifery educational programs, duly recognized in the
country in which it is located, has successfully completed the
prescribed course of studies in midwifery and has acquired the
requisite qualifications to be registered and/or legally licensed to
practice midwifery.
2. What Do Midwives Do?
The midwives must able to give the necessary supervision,
care, and advice to women during pregnancy, labour and the
postpartum period to conduct deliveries on her own
responsibility and to care for the newborn and the infant. This
care includes preventative measures, the detection of abnormal
conditions in mother and child, the procurement of medical

assistance and the execution of emergency measures in the

absence of medical help.

Midwife Jane on the Wards

Do you remember Jane Johnson? She and her friend, Joan Bell
are both midwifes. They work at Saint Peters Hospital, a large
teaching hospital in London. Joan did her training at St. Peters and
last year she passed her State Finals and qualified. She is working as a
staff midwife in a womens medical ward.
Jane is a student midwife and is still training. Last month, she
worked in one of the hospitals surgical wards. She learned to set
trolleys for sterile procedures such as surgical dressing, intravenous
infusion and catheterization. She carried out certain procedures
herself and assisted doctors with others. She often had to go to the
central sterile supply department to fetch sterile dressing packs.
Sometimes, she took patients to the X-Ray department or to the
occupational therapy unit.
This month, Jane is working in the same ward as Joan. She is
learning to Midwife patients suffering from diseases such as cardiac
infarction, cerebral haemorrhage, cerebral thrombosis and pneumonia.
At the moment, she is helping a staff midwife to give injections. The
staff midwife is explaining to her doses, action and side effects of the
drugs they are administering.
The other midwifes in the ward are carrying out various nursing
duties. Some are doing bed-baths and another is helping a patient to
get out of bed.

A doctor is doing a ward round and a physiotherapist is helping

a pneumonia patient to do deep breathing exercises.
Answer the following questions.
1. Where did Joan do her training?
2. When did Joan pass her training?
