Problem 1 (40 pts)

The prestressed concrete beam shown below is simply supported and has a span of 90 ft. In addition to its
self-weight, the beam carries two concentrated live loads P. It has a bonded straight tendon whose
centroid is 4 inches above the bottom of the beam. Use the following section properties: Ac = 402 in2; yt =
16.88 in.; yb = 19.12 in; Ic = 56,550 in4. The tendon consists of Grade 270 stress-relieved strands, with a
total area Ap = 1.84 in.2. The effective prestress after all losses is 160 ksi. The concrete has a compressive
strength of 6,000 psi. The unit weight of concrete including prestressed steel is 150 pcf. Under service
loads, the maximum tensile stress allowed is 7.5 f c . Do the following:
(a) Determine the maximum live loads P that can be carried by the beam considering only the service
load condition and assuming that the tensile stress at bottom surface controls. (10 pts)
(b) Use the AASHTO method to determine the nominal moment capacity of the beam. The

AASHTO formula is f ps f pu 1 k , where k 2 1.04
. (20 pts)

(c) Using the live loads P calculated in Part (a) and assuming the strength reduction factor, = 1.00,
calculate the factored moment at the midspan section and check if it is less than the flexural
capacity (use 1.25 load factor for dead load and 1.75 load factor for live loads). (10 pts)

Problem 2 (20 pts)

For the beam in Problem 1, assume that the prestressing tendon is external (unbonded tendon). Calculate
the nominal moment capacity using the ACI Code method. Use the same section, material properties,
prestressing steel data as given in Problem 1. (20 pts)

Problem 3 (45 pts)

The prestressed concrete beam shown below is simply supported and has a span of 60 ft. In addition to its
self-weight, the beam carries a uniform additional dead load (superimposed dead load) of 0.20 kip/ft and a
uniform live load of 0.80 kip/ft. Prestressing strands are bonded and some of the strands are harped as
shown in the figure below. The prestressing steel consists of 8-0.6" Dia. (area of each strand is 0.217 in2)
Grade 270 stress-relieved strands. The total effective prestress is 272 kips and each of the individual
strands has the same prestressing force. The concrete has a compressive strength of 6,000 psi. The unit
weight of concrete including prestressed steel is 150 pcf. Transfer length of the strands is taken as 50
times the strand diameter. Do the following:
(a) Based on the strands pattern shown below, find the eccentricities of the prestressing tendon (eo,m
and eo,support). (Note: The beam cross section is the same as the cross section in Problems 1
and 2). (5 pts)
(b) For the beam section at face of the support, calculate the factored shearing force to be used for
shear design. Assume that the support width is 12 inches. Use a load factor of 1.20 for dead loads
and 1.60 for live load. (10 pts)
(c) For the beam section at face of support, determine the required spacing of stirrup shear
reinforcement (Grade 60 steel) if #4 stirrups are used (2 legs per stirrup; area of #4 bar = 0.20
in2). Use the ACI Code method, including check of the maximum spacing and minimum shear
reinforcement requirements. For calculation of Vc, assume that flexure-shear does not control. (30
