In a basic way, hospice houses

are akin to hospitals in that they
offer round-the-clock medical care.
Typically, when a hospice patient
experiences a sudden crisis, he visits
a hospital for relief; however, hospice
houses are also equipped to handle
these events and can minimize the
anxiety that sometimes accompanies
ER visits along with exposure to
viruses and contagions.
Plus, as illnesses advance, care at a
hospice house may be preferable to
that at a hospital and offer increased
intimacy. At hospice houses, for
example, patients always have
private rooms. They can count on
seeing a doctor every day. A nurse
attends to 6 or 7 patients rather
than dozens. Families are invited
to be with patients throughout the
day and night. And clinical staff are
well versed in disease progression
and end-of-life care, meaning that
theyre a great source of specialized
information and comfort.

What Can
Hospice
Do for You?

Hospice is, most simply, a set of

services designed to help people
challenged by advanced illness.
Hospice care seeks to provide
support to patients wherever they
choose to call home, whether thats
their own residence, the home of
a family member, an assisted living
facility, a nursing home, or a hospice
house.
Ideally, every patient would remain
comfortably at home during the
course of their illness, but thats not
always possible. When specialized
medical care becomes necessary,
hospice houses are a great resource
for both patient and family.
For example, if a person often
relies on the hospital and requires
immediate medical attention,

Hickory

Morganton

Marion

admittance to the hospice house

is a helpful solution. Typically, such
visits are aimed at controlling specific
symptoms and are short-term in
nature. When the patients needs
have been managed, the person is
able to leave the hospice house and
return back home or to a facility.
Patients can also arrange stays at
the hospice house in response to
caregiver needs. This type of visit is
called respite care. For example, if
a family has planned a vacation or
needs to attend a special event that
the patient isnt up for, the patient
can stay at the hospice house for
five days of private care. These
pre-planned visits can also help
caregivers take a break from constant
responsibilities and find a chance to
rest.
spotlight on health

In general, hospice care provides a

number of tangible and intangible
benefits that most people arent
aware of, mainly because theyre
trying to take in so much information
when a loved one is ill. Its to the
familys advantage to ask questions
about what is available or would be
helpful so that they can tap into the
support they need.
Whether that involves understanding
insurance policies and payments,
obtaining hospital beds and other
equipment, or utilizing the services of
clinical or counseling staff, support is
just a request away.
No one person needs to tackle the
demands of advanced illness when
theyre trying to provide care and
compassion to a loved one.
Thanks to the opportunities that
hospice offers, no one has to. Help is
always at hand.

Ingredients that help fight

inflammation
eating that emphasizes fish, fruits,
vegetables, beans, and whole grains.
The Mediterranean diet can reduce
inflammation, and it also has been
linked to a lower risk of heart attack
and heart disease. It may even help
prevent stroke and Alzheimers
disease.

Those outside of the medical

profession may consider
inflammation a negative thing.
However, inflammation is an attempt
by the human body to heal itself.
Inflammation that does not overstay
its welcome can help protect
the body from bacterial and viral
infections.
Inflammation can be poor for health
when it is a constant occurrence.
Autoimmune diseases often trigger
inflammatory responses even when
there is no threat of infection, and
that can cause the immune system
to damage its own tissues. The right
diet can help reduce instances of
inflammation, and the following
are some ingredients to consider
eating more of to fight symptoms of
inflammation.
Ginger: Researchers at the
University of Michigan Medical School
found that ginger supplements
reduced markers of colon
inflammation in a select group of

Hickory

Morganton

patients. In the study, conducted

over a period of 28 days, 30 patients
were randomly assigned either two
grams of ginger root supplements
per day or a placebo. After 28
days, patients who had taken the
ginger supplements had significant
reductions in inflammation. Thats
a considerable finding, as colon
inflammation has been linked to a
higher risk of colon cancer.
Turmeric: Used primarily for
flavoring, turmeric is a spice closely
related to ginger and contains
polyphenolic compounds known to
help in the fight against inflammation.
Turmeric can be added to stews
and sauces, and some studies have
indicated that it can alleviate the pain
caused by osteoarthritis, a potentially
painful condition that occurs when
the joints natural shock absorbers
break down.
Extra-virgin olive oil: Extravirgin olive oil is a staple of the
Mediterranean diet, an approach to
spotlight on health

Vegetables: Men and women

who eat lots of different vegetables
may be less likely to develop
inflammation. According to a study
by the American Gut Project, people
who eat more than 25 species of
plants per week have a greater
assortment of bacteria in their
stomachs than those who eat fewer
than 10 per week. Thats because
the greater variety of produce and
legumes helps to increase the
amount of healthy bacteria lining
human stomachs, and that healthy
bacteria helps to reduce instances of
inflammation.
Omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3
fatty acids, commonly found in
certain types of fish, help suppress
cytokines and other inflammatory
chemicals. Salmon, herring, sardines,
and anchovies are loaded with
omega-3 fatty acids, and eating fish
twice a week can not only reduce
inflammation but also decrease levels
of LDL cholesterol, often referred to
as bad cholesterol.
A certain amount of inflammation is a
good thing. But men and women who
find themselves routinely battling
inflammation may want to make
certain dietary changes to counter
their inflammation problems.

The arrival of warmer weather changes the

landscape completely. Animals come out of
hiding and hibernation while trees and flowers
bloom anew. The spring season can be an
exciting time for naturalists and lovers of the
great outdoors because they can immerse
themselves in the sights, sounds and smells
of nature. But for many people, spring also
marks the start of allergy season and spending
time outdoors can become downright
uncomfortable for them.
The American College of Allergy, Asthma
& Immunology says nasal allergies affect
approximately 50 million people in the United
States. Allergic diseases, including asthma,
are the fifth most prevalent chronic diseases
among people of all ages and the third most
common in children. Allergic rhinitis, or hay
fever, can occur in spring, summer and/or early
fall. People who experience hay fever often
can attribute their symptoms to sensitivity to
pollens from trees, grasses, weeds, or airborne
mold spores.

No two allergy sufferers
are alike, so medications
that may work for one
person may be only mildly
effective for another. Many
medications can cause
side effects, which may be
just as frustrating as the
initial allergy symptoms.
Treatments may target
sneezing and itching but
fail to clear up congestion.
Drowsiness, dry mouth and
nasal irritation may be side
effects of common allergy
drugs.
People who want to avoid
allergy medication can
look to natural remedies to
alleviate their symptoms.
Whether used alone or in
concert with traditional
medicine, these remedies
may make spending time
outdoors more pleasant.
Try probiotics. Probiotics,
those friendly bacteria
that reside in the digestive
system, can do more
than just treat an upset
stomach. Naturopathic
doctors say that probiotics
also can influence the
immune system and
may help strengthen its
response to common
allergens. Since probiotics
are good for replenishing

healthy bacteria in the

body anyway, many people
may want to keep taking
them once their allergy
symptoms have come and
gone.
Use neti pots or saline
sprays. A small amount of
saltwater can rinse away
allergens, such as pollen,
that get lodged in the nose.
These rinses also can help
clear up congestion and
flush out any other irritants.
Load up on omega-3s.
A German study published
in the journal Allergy found
that participants who ate
foods rich in omega-3 fatty
acids were less likely to
suffer allergy symptoms
than those who didnt
regularly eat these foods.
Omega-3s can help fight
inflammation. Drinking
more fluids and using
spices in cooking can help
flush out allergens as well.

Simple ways

liver
health

The liver is the bodys largest internal organ,

responsible for processing substances that
enter the body and acting as a filtering
system that is essential to eliminating toxic
substances. Whats more, the liver produces
proteins, clotting factors, enzymes, and
hormones essential to health.
Considering how integral a properly
functioning liver can be, one can see just
how vital it is to maintain a healthy liver.
Unfortunately, many of the foods, beverages
and medications people consume on a
regular basis can affect both liver health and
the overall health of the body. But men and
women can take several steps to ensure their
liver stays healthy.
* Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol.
Overconsumption of alcohol damages the
liver. According to the National Center for

keep your drinking to a minimum, for
the health of your liver and a variety
of other reasons.
Quit smoking. Every time you
smoke you are putting more than 60
different chemicals into your body.
At some point, cigarette smoke will
be handled by the liver. Cigarette
smoke can decrease the amount of
oxygen that red blood cells carry to
the vital organs of the body, including
the liver. Over time, this can result
in damage to the liver known as
cirrhosis. In addition, the American
Cancer Society notes that some
studies have found a link between
smoking and liver cancer. However,
this relationship is difficult to discern
because smokers also tend to be
more likely to drink alcohol.
Eat healthier. A healthy diet that
includes an array of fresh fruits
and vegetables is good for the liver.
Vegetables are excellent sources of
fiber, which helps toxins move quickly
through the digestive system without
putting stress on the liver. Sulfur-rich
foods, such as garlic and onions, can
help detoxify environmental toxins
that end up in the body. Turmeric,
licorice and cinnamon may also
support healthy liver function.
Exercise caution with
medications. Certain medications
can tax the liver, especially when
medications are mixed with other
substances. Even seemingly
innocuous medications, like

acetaminophen, can cause potential

liver damage over time. In fact, CNCA
Health notes that acetaminophen
overdose is the leading cause of
acute liver failure in the United
States. When taking any medications,
men and women should read the
information sheets that accompany
prescriptions to determine if any side
effects that may affect the liver are
noted. Doctors may require frequent
checkups and blood tests to monitor
liver health when their patients are
taking certain types of medications.

can put more pressure on the liver.

Sweetening agents, preservatives and
other substances can be particularly
detrimental to liver health.
Sip green tea. Green tea is full of
antioxidants known as catechins,
which have been shown to improve
the functions of the liver.
Maintaining liver health is an
important part of a healthy lifestyle
that can benefit the entire body.

Limit exposure to toxins. Men and

women can choose organic foods
whenever possible to cut down on
the amount of chemical residue they
consume. Even switching over to
natural household cleaning products
can reduce the number of chemicals
you are exposed to, and reducing that
exposure can ultimately protect the
liver.
Drink more water and
exercise regularly. Fresh
water helps flush toxins out
of the body, helping the liver
by not making it
work so hard. In
addition, exercising
and sweating detoxifies the
body. While exercising and
after working out, replace
lost fluids with clean,
healthy water.

Finding Better Quality of Life Through

Palliative Care

If you think you already know what

palliative care can provide, expect to
be surprised:

What exactly does

palliative care mean?

The word palliative comes from

Latin and means to soothe or to
relieve. The idea behind palliative
care is to give patients better quality
of life by relieving them of pain and
suffering.

Is palliative care the

same as hospice?

Palliative care has traditionally been

associated with end-of-life care and
a six-month life expectancy. But, in
recent years, its use and scope have
widened dramatically. Nowadays,
palliative care serves patients with
curable illnesses assisting them
on the journey to recovery and
helps patients with chronic illnesses
as well, allowing them to enjoy life
even in the face of long-term health
conditions.

How is palliative care

different from palliative
medicine?

Palliative care typically involves a

patients final months of illness while

palliative medicine is more closely

tied to treatments for both shortterm recuperation and ongoing
illness. Palliative medicine, in effect, is
the mature version of palliative care,
serving a more diverse cross-section
of patients and assisting them
with all the nuances of symptom
management and complex medical
decisions.

How is Life Transitions

connected to palliative
medicine?

Life Transitions is a mobile medical

practice whose care is based on the
principles of palliative medicine. It
treats patients wherever they call
home, coming to them rather than
requiring them to make an oftendifficult trip to a doctors office.

Who should be considered for

palliative medicine?

Life Transitions palliative medicine

practice is an excellent option for
people who have trouble dealing
with physical exertion. Its especially
useful for managing needs related to
heart problems, pneumonia, chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD), and other acute medical
issues.

What should I expect when

I contact Life Transitions?

After you call Life Transitions, an

initial meeting is set up, and a nurse
practitioner visits you at home to
gather information and determine
the potential benefits of a medical
regimen. If treatment is advised, a
program of care is begun to best
meet patient needs. In addition, Life
Transitions services are coordinated
with the patients primary doctor.
Theyre designed to enhance overall
care, not replace an existing medical
relationship.

How do I pay for

Life Transitions?

Payment for Life Transitions services

is covered by Medicare and Medicaid.
Private insurance companies also
support this type of care, although
copays and deductibles do apply. The
Life Transitions staff can help you

Healthy habits to lower your

Certain types of
cancer are more
likely to strike
certain types of
people than others.
For example,
while men can be
diagnosed with breast cancer,
women are far more likely to
develop the disease. But just
because a persons risk of
developing cancer is low, that
does not make that person
immune from the disease. As a
result, its important that men
and women take steps to lower
their cancer risk.

cancer risk

One of the more effective ways

to lower your risk for cancer is
to ensure your lifestyle choices
are as healthy as possible.
Choosing habits that benefit
your short- and long-term
health can reduce your risk for
cancer and a host of additional
ailments.

Maintain a healthy weight.

According to the American
Cancer Society, men and women
who are overweight or obese
are at a greater risk of several
types of cancer, including
cancer of the esophagus,
pancreas, colon and rectum,
breast, kidney, and thyroid.
The National Cancer Institute
defines obesity as someone
with a body mass index, or BMI,
of 30 or above, while someone
with a BMI between 25 and
29.9 is considered overweight.
Maintaining a healthy weight or
shedding excess weight if you
are already at an elevated risk
for cancer can lower your risk
for cancer and other potentially

and stroke.

Obesity during
pregnancy

a growing problem

Changes to the body are

expected during pregnancy,
and weight gain is one of
the changes most often
associated with pregnancy.
But excessive weight gain
during pregnancy can cause
complications for a woman
and her baby.
The American Congress
of Obstetricians and
Gynecologists reports that
more than 50 percent
of pregnant women are
overweight or obese.
Many women begin their
pregnancy intending to
eat healthy throughout
their pregnancy. But those
good intentions can get
pushed aside when morning
sickness makes it hard to
stomach certain foods. In
addition, craving certain
foods for no apparent
reason can make it hard to
stay on course.
Other women may already
Summer 2015

be overweight at the onset

of pregnancy and continue
to gain weight. Women who
have not lost pregnancy
weight from a previous
child may begin their
subsequent pregnancy at a
disadvantage.
Contrary to popular belief,
a woman does not need
to double her calorie
consumption to provide
nutrition for her baby.
Nor should she gain too
much weight. According
to BabyCenter and the
Institute of Medicine, the
amount of weight a woman
should gain during her
pregnancy depends on
her starting weight and
her body mass index, or
BMI, which measures the
relationship between height
and weight. If a womans
pre-pregnancy BMI is in the
healthy range, she should

early-stage heart disease, type
2 diabetes, and other issues.
Preeclampsia, gestational diabetes
and postpartum weight retention are
other considerations. In terms of the
fetus, cesarean delivery, stillbirth,
prematurity, congenital anomalies,

and childhood obesity are common

among babies born to overweight
mothers. Whats more, obese
women may not be able to elect for
anesthesiology, like an epidural or
spinal anesthesia, during delivery
because obscured physical landmarks
and excessive layers of fat can
make administration risky. Its also
more difficult for doctors to conduct
ultrasounds on obese or overweight
women, making it challenging to
track the babys well-being.

Many women feel that pregnancy

is a chance to eat without regard
to diet and a time to enjoy foods
that may normally be off-limits.
However, this could be a recipe for
excessive weight gain. Doctors offer
these recommendations for keeping
healthy during pregnancy:

Nutritionists warn that good eating

habits during pregnancy should
begin as early as the first trimester.
Too often pregnant women do not
realize they have a problem until
theyve already gained weight.
Compounding the issue is that many
OB/GYN doctors do not readily
discuss appropriate weight gain with
pregnant patients. Weight gain may
be an afterthought to blood tests,
genetic testing and lifestyle options
doctors mention early on in the
pregnancy.

Which doctor

to see and when

Women who split their

health management among
different doctors may not
know which doctor to turn
to when their health comes
into question. They may ask
themselves, Is this issue best
addressed by a family doctor
or a gynecologist? Answers
to such questions depend
on personal preferences and
the type of condition youre
looking to treat.
Family doctors or general
practitioners may be qualified
to provide many of the
screenings and services for
which a woman may visit
a gynecologist or womens
health practice. Such doctors
can perform routine pelvic
examinations, oversee
screenings for cervical cancer
and conduct breast exams
to check for lumps and other
abnormalities, just like a

womans specialty doctor

may run tests to calculate
body mass index or check for
cholesterol levels.
A woman who feels more
comfortable with one specific
doctor may see him or her for
a variety of health concerns,
provided that doctor offers
certain services. However,
there are instances when
certain healthcare questions
are best answered by
specialists. The following
information can help women
determine which doctor to see
when certain situations arise.
Annual physicals:
Gynecologists and family
doctors can conduct physical
examinations. Both can order
blood lab tests and urinalysis
to check cholesterol levels and
for any vitamin deficiencies.

Heart rate, blood pressure, weight, and height are other
screenings that can be handled at either office.
Bacterial and yeast infections or urinary tract
infections: A general practitioner or gynecologist can
address these infections. However, some women feel
more comfortable discussing genital issues with their
gynecologists. A gynecologist may be more experienced
at identifying problems and ordering appropriate
follow-up exams. A family doctor may not require an
examination unless you request it and may treat broad
symptoms.
Colds and coughs: In theory, a gynecologist may be
able to diagnose and treat common health ailments. But
the majority of a gynecologists work concerns the female
reproductive system, so common colds and coughs are
best left to general practitioners who diagnose respiratory
and bronchial conditions daily.
Mood disorders: If changes in mood seem to stem from
hormones or the result of a pregnancy, a gynecologist or
obstetrician may have treatment options available that
can alleviate specific triggers. Many women initially turn
to a family doctor if they are experiencing depression
or changes in mood or behavior. Both a family doctor

or a gynecologist may refer a patient to a mental health

specialist if the situation seems to warrant more action.
Nutrition and weight loss: Many patients see a family
doctor to seek advice on adopting a healthy diet. Some
medical offices have a nutritionist on staff who can offer
food counseling and exercise advise.
Infertility: It is best to visit a gynecologist or obstetrician
to talk about any infertility issues. Such doctors have
more intimate knowledge of the female reproductive
system and could be more learned regarding the latest
therapies and studies pertaining to fertility.
Cancer screening: PAP tests and breast exams can be
performed at either doctors office, although patients may
feel more comfortable if a gynecologist performs these
screenings.
It is important to note that not all gynecologists are
obstetricians. Some handle womens reproductive
issues but do not deliver children. Patients who prefer
a doctor knowledgeable about reproductive health and
wont be busy handling child deliveries should select a
gynecologist.

Many food products

boast added fiber on their
packaging. Breads, cookies,
beverages, and so much
more contain extra fiber
in response to the publics
growing desire to consume
foods with high levels of
dietary fiber, which medical
professionals claim is an
essential element to a
healthy diet. Despite that
publicity, many consumers
remain in the dark about
the role fiber plays in the
body.

Why do we need

fiber?

About fiber
Many people are aware of
the importance of including
fiber in the diet, but few
people understand the
importance of dietary

fiber. Fiber is an essentially

indigestible substance
that is found mainly in
the outer layers of plants.
Fiber will pass through the
human digestive system
virtually unchanged from
when it was consumed
and without being broken
down into nutrients. Fiber
is classified into two types:
insoluble fiber, which will
not dissolve in water, and
soluble fiber, which can be
dissolved. Insoluble fiber
is typically found in whole
grain products, dark leafy
vegetables, green beans,
wheat bran, corn bran,
seeds, nuts, and skins
of fruits and vegetables.
Soluble fiber comes from
foods like oats, nuts, fruits,

and dried beans.
Fiber and digestion
Fiber is essential to digestion.
The Harvard School of Medical
Health advises people should get
between 20 to 30 grams of fiber
each day, though many people
do not consume that much fiber.
Fiber adds bulk in the digestive
system, which helps soften stool
and flush out the intestines.
It assists in making bowel
movements more frequent,
preventing constipation. A diet
high in fiber helps reduce the risk
for hemorrhoids and diverticular
disease.
Fiber and weight loss
While fiber is often associated
with improving regularity,
that is not its only role. Fiber,
particularly soluble fiber, that can
be slowly digested will prolong
the digestive process, helping to
keep the stomach fuller longer.
Feeling full can help a person eat
healthy portions. Fiber-rich foods
are also less calorie-dense. This
means you can eat more and
feel fuller without consuming
tons of calories. Increasing fiber
consumption may help men and
women looking to lose weight.

concentrations by decreasing
the absorption of cholesterol
and bile acids in the small
intestines. When less bile acid
is absorbed, the body must
use stored cholesterol to
make more, lowering blood
cholesterol as a result. The
American Heart Association
reports greater reductions in
low-density lipoprotein, or LDL,
cholesterol among people who
consume diets high in soluble
fiber compared to diets low in
saturated fat and cholesterol
alone.
How to increase fiber
consumption
While many products include
added fiber, here are some of the
best ways to increase the number
of grams of fiber consumed on a
daily basis.

Fiber and blood sugar

The slow absorption of
carbohydrates also regulates
the absorption of sugar into the
bloodstream. This can prevent
sugar spikes that may be
dangerous to those with diabetes.
It also may be able to help reduce
the risk of developing type 2
diabetes, according to a study
published in the New England
Journal of Medicine in May 2000.

Eat more bran, as bran has

the highest fiber content of
any food at about 25 to 45
percent.
Consume whole fruit instead
of juice. Whole fruits have
more fiber in them and fewer
calories than juices. Eating
fruit can help you to feel fuller
longer.
Pass up on refined flours. Opt
for whole grains whenever
eating bread, cereal and
baked goods. Try to aim for
grains that have at least three
grams of fiber per serving.
Increase your consumption
of beans. Beans are relatively
inexpensive, filling and tasty.
Plus, they pack a great deal
of fiber, protein and other
important nutrients.
Take a fiber supplement if
you feel you are not getting
enough fiber in your daily
diet. Gummy fiber chews can
be tasty ways to get fiber.
Opt for fresh fruit and
vegetables for snacks over
processed foods.

Walking, a great way to

burn calories and stay fit

The fitness business is a

multi-billion dollar industry.
People invest great deals of
money in an effort to stay as
fit and healthy as possible.
But while exercise equipment
and gym memberships are
worthy investment, those
focused on fitness should not
underestimate the value of
walking as a means to burning
calories and promoting overall
health.
Walking is great exercise,
and people of just about
any age and fitness level
can get out and walk.
According to Dr. Andrew
Weil, a renowned author and

expert in integrative medicine,

walking is such a good
exercise because it makes
use of all muscles, promotes
coordination and balance and
carries the least risk of injury
for people of any age.
The Mayo Clinic concurs,
noting that physical
exercise does not need to
be complicated and that
brisk walking can help a
person to live a healthier life
by providing a number of
benefits:

through physical activity.

Walking can prevent or make it

easier to manage various health
conditions that are dependent on
weight and cardiovascular health,
including blood pressure, heart
disease and type 2 diabetes.

Walking is a weight-bearing
exercise that can help strengthen
bones and promote good posture.

Exercise, like walking, has been

known to benefit mood, specifically
for those people battling depression.
Although walking is simple, it is
an ideal exercise for a number of
reasons. First and foremost, it is
affordable for anyone and can be
done anywhere. What makes walking
attractive to many people from a
fitness standpoint is it doesnt require
learning any fancy moves, nor does

one need to feel foolish when walking

in public areas. People who walk
for fitness have a greater chance of
sticking with the activity than other
exercises that may lose their appeal
after a few months.
What people may not realize is
that walking provides many of
the same benefits as jogging, only
with less impact on the joints and
feet. Walking also is less taxing on
the heart, particularly for people
who are adopting a more active
lifestyle after a period of being
sedentary. According to The Walking
Site, the average person can burn
approximately 100 calories per mile
walked. During a brisk walk, with an
average pace of 4 mph, a person can
burn between 149 and 220 calories
during a 40-minute walk.
Some easy ways to add some
intensity to your walk is to increase
your pace, walk uphill or bear more
weight by wearing a weight vest.

Incorporating more pronounced arm

In order to make the most of your

of walking shoes. Exercise can
be thwarted by pain in the feet.
Comfortable shoes will make it
easier for you to stick to your walking
regimen.

Stand up straight and look ahead

while walking. Do not stoop or look at

Bend the elbows and swing the

arms a little while walking.

Bring a friend along who can

engage in conversation and make the
time spent walking go more quickly.

Fitness
boot
camp

Fitness boot camp classes are growing

in popularity at fitness facilities
across the country. This type of group
physical training, which may take
place indoors or outside, employs
personal trainers and sometimes former
military personnel as instructors. The
regimen is designed to build strength
and endurance through intense group
exercise intervals. Classes may run 30
minutes to one hour in length. Many
classes include some form of fast-paced
cardiovascular exercise, along with a
series of strength-training elements,

like using dumbbells or the resistance

of ones own body weight. Flexibility
exercises or stretching may be part of
the classes, borrowing elements from
yoga and Pilates. Although the boot
camp class gets its name from military
training drills, its not about being yelled
at or receiving negative reinforcement
from instructors. Many people enjoy
these classes because they allow
participants to compete against one
another, competition that many people
feel encourages them to do their best.

How to avoid

unhealthy
habits
at the office

According to the United States

Bureau of Labor Statistics, working
professionals spend an average of
8.5 hours per day at work. Many
professionals spend much of their
time at work sitting down in front of a
computer, which can be detrimental
to long-term health.
Staying sedentary for long periods
of time can contribute to a host
of health ailments, including
being overweight and obese. But
professionals who work in offices can

take various steps to ensure all that

time at work is not having an adverse
affect on their overall health.

Get out of your seat.

Modern workplaces are built around

sitting, so workers must find some
time to stand up and stretch. Sitting
too long can compromise posture
and lead to craning of the neck for
looking at the computer screen. Get
out of your chair, walk around the
office and get the blood moving in
your body.

Pack your lunch.

Bringing lunch to work puts you in

greater control over the foods you
are eating. You can pack a healthy
and diverse selection of foods. Dont
forget to also bring some snacks
that offer a healthy mix of protein
and carbohydrates to keep your
energy levels up. Otherwise, you may
succumb to the temptation of the
lunchroom snack machine.

Take frequent breaks.

Stale air inside an office environment

can make you feel fatigued and less
productive. Also, spending too much
time behind your desk may contribute to
feelings of stress and tension. Use every
opportunity possible to get up and leave
your office. Instead of sending an instant
message or making a phone call to a
coworker, visit him or her in person. Use
your lunch hour to get outside instead of
eating at your desk. Plan a brief, midafternoon walk outside of your office to
clear your mind and get some fresh air.

Disinfect surfaces often.

Oftentimes, when one person at the

office gets sick, many others soon
follow. Colds and the flu can spread
rapidly in close quarters. Keep your
desk drawer stocked with some
alcohol swabs or disinfecting spray and
routinely clean your keyboard, mouse,
touchscreen, and desk surfaces. You
also can wipe off door handles and
knobs around the office if you want to

Swimming

more than just a recreational activity

Many people view swimming as a
purely recreational activity, but the
health benefits of swimming should
not be overlooked.
Swimming is a great way to get
fit, providing great cardiovascular
exercise thats easy on the joints.
Swimming engages a variety of
muscle groups, making it a great
way to get a complete workout.
The following are some additional
benefits of including swimming as
part of your exercise regimen.

When swimming, muscles are

worked hard, which can help build
strength. Much of that work can
be traced to the fact that water is
far more resistant than air, forcing
a body in water to work harder
to move than it would if it were
walking on solid ground.
Water buoyancy can enable
people to do exercises that would
be jarring on land. In water, roughly
90 percent of the body is buoyant.
That means working out in the
water will put less strain on the
knees and hips when it comes to

performing high-impact jumping

exercises.

Swimming is a great
cardiovascular workout. Swimming
can elevate the heart rate to an
optimal level and work the lungs,
too. Pushing oneself harder and
harder can help to burn calories
and lead to weight loss.
Just about every muscle is
used when a body is swimming.
Swimming targets the shoulders,
back, arms, legs, hips, and gluteals
without requiring complicated
workout equipment.
Swimming may help improve
coordination, balance and posture.
Swimming also may promote
greater flexibility by stretching the
body through fluid movements.
While swimming is often considered
a relaxing activity tailor-made for
warm summer days, it also provides
a complete and demanding
workout that can benefit the body
in a variety of ways.

The Many Benefits of Hospice

Lessening the Effects of Depression
in Surviving Spouses

We know hospice provides high

quality care to patients, but now
were also seeing a benefit for
spouses, said Katherine Ornstein,
lead author of the study. If we
want to understand the impact of
hospice care, we should consider
the potential benefit not just to the
patient, but to the caregiver, and
perhaps, the entire family and social
network. We need to remember that
care near the end of life affects not
only patients, but also their loved
ones.
Most people are aware of the many
benefits hospice patients receive
while under hospice care. As a
hospice patient, the person receives

an individualized plan of care tailored

to meet their needs during the end of
life. A team consisting of physician,
nurse, certified nursing assistant,
social worker, chaplain and volunteer
work together to focus on improving
the patients quality of life during the
last days.
Even more significant, a study
in the Journal of Pain Symptom
Management showed that patients
receiving hospice care on average
lived 29 times longer than patients
not receiving hospice care. The
patient population surveyed was a
mix of cancer and congestive heart
failure patients.

Fortunately, the benefits of hospice

care are not limited to the patient.
As part of the hospice benefit, grief
counseling is offered free for up to
13 months to the patients primary
caregiver. This benefit, coupled with
the personal care provided to the
patient in their last days, is having
a profound impact on the surviving
spouses.
Our hope at Burke Hospice &
Palliative Care is to accompany
the patient and caregiver on their
journey, said Ginger Furmage,
Director of Psycho-Social, Spiritual
Care & Bereavement for Burke
Hospice & Palliative Care. I have

seen first-hand in our bereavement
support group meetings that
fellowship is uplifting. Not only do we
care for our patients and families, we
care about our patients and families.
Knowing someone cares enough to
reach out can mean the difference
between understandable grief and
deep depression.
Researchers at the Mount Sinai
School of Medicine recently released
a report showing that spouses of
hospice patients receiving at least
three days of care were significantly
less likely to become depressed
compared to spouses of those
patients who did not receive hospice
care.
We are seeing some benefits for
surviving spouses in terms of a
decrease in depressive symptoms

after death relative to spouses of

those who did not use hospice, said
Katherine Ornstein, PhD, professor of
Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount
Sinai. These differences are even
more substantial one year after
death.
The study did not specify which
hospice service lessened the
surviving spouses depression the
most, but instead pointed to the
combination of the care given to
the patient and the support given to
the family as major factors for the
difference.
For example, hospice is focused on
symptom management and comfort
care, which may relieve patient
suffering and reduce depression
for families. Hospice also includes
services specially designed for
caregivers, including bereavement

counseling, Orstein said. Advance

care planning occurs in hospice
setting which may also relive stress
for families. We simply do not know
which component or components are
most impactful.

Sunburn is something
nearly everyone will
experience at least once
in their lifetimes. Though
men, women and children
should look to prevent
sunburn entirely, sometimes
sunburns occur, making
those exposed to too much
sun uncomfortable and
possibly even dealing with
considerable pain.
Sunburn is marked by
red, sensitive skin that
can be hot to the touch.
Inflammation and blistering
may occur. The Skin Cancer
Foundation says that while
sunburn may seem like a
temporary irritation, it can
cause long-lasting damage
to the skin. Treating sunburn
may require several
different approaches.

Get out of the sun the

moment you first feel

irritation. Your skin may not
be red, but irritation may
be the first indication that
you are being burned by the
sun.

Get relief from

sunburn

Blisters may occur if

sunburn is particularly bad.

Do not succumb to the
temptation of popping the
blisters, as doing so may
result in an infection.

Take a dose of ibuprofen

to reduce swelling and
counteract the pain.
Ibuprofen also may help
prevent some long-term
damage.

If a blistering burn covers

more than 20 percent of
the body, seek medical
attention. In addition, visit
your physician if a sunburn
is accompanied by fever
and chills.

How to build and maintain

strong bones

Osteoporosis, a disease that causes

bones to become weakened and
brittle over time, affects millions
of people across the globe.
The International Osteoporosis
Foundation says an osteoporosisrelated fracture occurs roughly once
every 3 seconds, accounting for more
than 8.9 million fractures a year.
Younger individuals typically heal
from fractures more quickly than
older adults, who often discover
that fractures greatly impede their
mobility and quality of life.
Bone health is important at any
age, but it is particularly crucial
as a person gets older. Without a
strong framework of bones, the
body collapses on itself and rates
of fracture increase. Fortunately,
there are several ways to keep and
maintain strong bones.
Bones are largely made up of a
protein called collagen, which is

bound together by calcium and other

trace minerals. Vitamin D and calcium
work in concert, with vitamin D
helping the body to absorb calcium
so it can find its way into bones.
Experts advise getting the right ratio
of calcium, protein and vitamin D
to safeguard against osteoporosis.
The Institute of Medicine suggests
that adults get between 600 and
800 international units (IUs) of
vitamin D every day, and between
1,000 and 1,300 milligrams of
calcium daily. Dairy products, such
as low- and nonfat milk, yogurt and
cheese, are high in calcium. Dark
green vegetables and almonds
contain calcium in smaller amounts.
Obtaining calcium and vitamin D
through natural sources is always
preferable, but doctors may suggest
supplementation if foods are not
providing what a person needs to
meet the minimum recommended
levels.
Exercise is another important

Quitting smoking also can promote

strong bones. Smoking has been
linked to poor skeletal health in both
men and women, and the longer one
smokes, the greater ones risk for
fracture.

Foundation says 30 minutes of
exercise each day can help. Higherintensity exercises should be mixed
with lower-intensity workouts for
the best results. Weight-bearing
exercises, such as hiking, dancing

1 and 3 percent of bone. An exercise
regimen also should include lifting
weights or using resistance bands.

injury, whether its with the help of
a website or simply going on your
own intuition, is not safe, as many
fitness-related injuries share similar
symptoms that make it easy for
men and women without medical
degrees to misdiagnose. Doctors can
determine exactly what your injury
is and help get you on the path to
recovery by prescribing medications
or developing treatment plans. Such
treatments can be the difference
between a speedy recovery and one
that lasts months on end.
Recognize the importance of
patience. No two people heal the
same, but patience with an injury
is a part of every athletes healing
process. If you dont allow time
for an injury to heal or if you try to
accelerate your healing process, the
existing injury can worsen and you
may even injure another part of your
body while overcompensating for

your initial injury. Go into the healing

process knowing it takes time, and
be as patient as possible during your
recovery.
Be careful about the rest of your
body. One of the problems many
athletes encounter when dealing with
an injury is the effect that injury has
on other areas of your body. Athletes
who perform strength training may
be able to continue part of their
regimen even after suffering an
injury, but they should make note of
their form to make sure their body is
not overcompensating for the area
that is injured. Doing so can lead to
new injuries or even exacerbate the
existing injury. When visiting a doctor,
get a specific list of which exercises,
if any, you can still perform while
recovering. If you plan to weight
train during your recovery, reduce
the amount of weight you lift, which
can help ensure your form remains
correct.

Report any new setbacks

immediately. Some athletes suffer
setbacks during their recoveries, and
while setbacks can be expected,
they should not just be accepted
as another hurdle to clear. Report
any setbacks to your physician
immediately so he or she can advise
you on the next steps to take.
Return slowly. Once your injury has
healed, keep in mind that you cant
just dive back in to your workout
routine at full steam. Gradually
increase the intensity of your
workouts as your body once again
acclimates itself to exercise.
Injury is a reality of life for many
athletes. But how athletes handle
their recoveries can affect how
quickly they get back in the swing of
things.
